10,000 Bees Swarm Airplane in Massachusetts

Jun 4th 2009
By Nick Prueher

A swarm of 10,000 honeybees appeared out of nowhere on Sunday and landed on the wing of a parked airplane at Beverly Airport in Massachusetts.

Witnesses called police, who sent in a local bee removal expert, Al Wilkins, to cut the bees' layover short.

High winds may have caused the swarm to make an emergency landing at the airport, Wilkins said, or the queen may have decided to simply take a breather.

Wilkins used a specially designed bee vacuum, probably bought at Sears, to suck the bees off the wing and relocate them to a hive on his property. Before being removed, the bees were charged $15 for their first checked pollen sac, $50 for each additional sac.
