Can we really have some sort of mentor system ? it would really help reverts considering most of the posts on advice and support channel are reverts facing difficulties.

We can do it if members volunteer to be mentors. I believe our first step will be to set
up a list of volunteers

I am not sure if anyone has already posted this elsewhere, but there is an initiative set up locally (WALES) for new Muslims and includes this kind of buddy system.

this page has links to other new muslim projects in UK

I am very much interested in this as a project. I am still trying to figure out how as a forum what would be the best approach.
Peer Counseling type mentoring is very effective and helpful. I believe that this is a very worthwhile effort to get involved in.
Any suggestions as to what you think us staff members need to do to make it work?

I guess we should have a list of volunteers. Each new revert would request for a mentor (or we would suggest one ) and then we can allot a person based on location and may be language.the forum would be updated with who is mentoring whom and who is free.

You just might become our test subject. ;D
If any member reading this would like to be a mentor to Jess PM me, do not post it here. I will see what we can do. this would be a good start and we can find out the actual logistics and problems in a mentoring program

Jess I believe we may have a mentor for you. As soon as I work things out I will send you her email address. Initially she will be anonymous to you but I can assure you it will be a female familiar with were you live.

Jess, it might be useful for you to tell Woodrow what kind of support you are looking for.
General advice on Islamic living?
Specific Islamic teachings?
Emotional support with being a revert in a non-Muslim environment?
etc
That might help Woodrow in partnering you up with the best suited mentor.

What type of system do you have in mind? Of course we want you to use your system, but please keep us informed as to what you are doing. Since it is on the forum we do want to be certain no forum rules are violated.

what all i wanted to do was to create a page where people can enter their names requesting for a mentor which you moderators or me can visit and allot them from another list of people willing to volunteer.
I basically plan to use google docs .. :P

Are you thinking like a stickey thread or a seperate section?
A stickey thread can be feasible. A separate section may pose some problems.

OK get ready here is the entire plan ..
Basically it would require a sticky thread asking for volunters as well as a place for requesting mentors.
That thread would be accesible only to registered IB members. There we would point them to a web-fill-up form (depending of course if they are mentor or a volunteer).
These are the pages...
Now once they fill up , Moderators will be checking the spreadsheet containing the fill-in data from the forms..LEts take the example for volunteer spreadsheet which would give the details from the form (grey) and we can mention whom we alloted that person to ensure other mods also know.this spreadsheet can be edited by multiple mods.(which of course is a feature of google docs.
I hope everything is simple and doesn't violate any rules :P ?

As the Qur'an says that no one should accomodate over his abilities. So, I won't. But I do think that your idea is really good because we need to give special attention to the new comers.

As the Qur'an says that no one should accomodate over his abilities.
Indeed we should also ensure that people being alloted are knowledgable bros/sis

Count me in Zakirs.I think we need to design a page of rules to ensure that when we do not have an answer etc, we know when to look for one and how.
Great idea brother, dont be disheartened by poor response, wuthering heights was knocked back 50 times b4 going into publication. Keep trying its a great idea:D
