China covers suicide bridge in "butter," safety margarinally improved

by Stephen Greenwood (RSS feed) on Sep 16th 2009 at 9:30AM

Does anyone know when April Fool's Day is celebrated in China? Because if this article isn't a result of some media hoax, then I've got a lot of unanswered questions...

According to China Daily & the UK's Metro Newspaper, Government officials in Guangzhou have ordered a 1,000ft long steel bridge to be covered in greasy fat, to prevent people from climbing on the structure. The bridge has a history of attracting jumpers that often attempt to gain media coverage or draw attention to personal problems.

Government spokesman Shiu Liang said that they've tried employing guards at both ends of the bridge, and went as far as installing special fences with notices asking people not to commit suicide. And every new attempt, successful or not, means several hours of backed up traffic and a wave of complaints from local residents.

The butter however, has seen positive results. Bridge guard Wong Man stated, "Since we put up the butter there have been no problems with these attention seekers."

No word yet on if Nintendo intends to sue for breach of intellectual property.

So, travelers, bridge climbers, and citizens of China - please be careful out there. And if anyone knows if this is actually true, please drop us a line.

I thought it was just hilarious, in bizarre news.. it was either this or the 'cycle of life' by the body works, you know that German guy that takes dead people plastinates them and poses them in various scenes while on lookers smile and take pictures.. It is so disturbing sob7an Allah.. this exhibit elicited a reaction out of Germans which was such a surprise, as they seem to me to be so blase about everything...I just don't think he should be allowed to do these things.. but then people decide that is what they want with their bodies after their death.. so disturbing..

It is so nightmarish.. he is so creepy and they are so matter of fact about it. His last exhibit was sexual in nature, and really disgusting. In fact I find them all disgusting.. there is a fine line between educational and frankly macabre and obscene.

I wonder if they all sign their bodies or if he goes around stealing graves. Hard to imagine people would want to be a part of that..

sobhan Allah..

may Allah swt grant us a dignified life and a dignified death and paradise's high meed..

I tell you, I had to resolve my feelings about those exhibits and I think one guy really summed up what I wanted to say perfectly:
The problem with death in our culture is not that we have taboos about it, but that we lack a rich language for articulating the experience and its meaning. It’s hard to see how Body Worlds will help solve that problem. Indeed, what is on display is not the mystery of death, but the reduction of bodies to inert plasticized parts displayed for viewers — a pornography of the dead human body.
Body Worlds brings us face to face with something, but it will leave us mute and inarticulate — the very image of what we behold.

by tmatt.. I didn't want to include the link because it had a disturbing image of a gutted 8 month pregnant woman with the fetus inside imsad

Actually I have written to him, I offered him my body on the condition that wherever he shows the art he shows me with two fingers raised towards the House of Commons, he did not accept the offer........shame.

he might just show you with your two fingers up something with his latest exhibition. you should keep trying for an exhibit of your own without making too many demands!

all the best

You mean a sort of double nostril pick? Cool.

But after I am dead how can I preserve myself, I have to get somoeone else to do it, and he has the practise.
