If you want something simple, start with Imam Nawawi's collection "40 Hadith", if you're looking for something more extensive, then it doesn't get better than Imam al Bukhari's saheeh.
40 Hadith is far cheaper. The 9 volume set from DarusSalam is at least $110 now.
