We have a dog, but he lives outside and is treated a s dog, not as a child!

I hate to see people treating their animals as babies, I respect my dog for what he is...a dog!

i have a hamster...its a white sapphire...and i feel very bad for it coz its lonely...when i buy another mate for it, it fights till things get gory...lol...strange creature..i used to be an avid fish keeper for years...since when i was 11...but got sick of my mum constantly overfeeding it and dirtying the tank...love fishes...

wa alaikum assalam,

I don't have a pet. I have a feline friend ;D I don't consider Squeaky to be owned by me - we both provide each other with mutual love, affection and attention. She isn't something I can purchase and then throw away. Instead, when we chose to adopt her, we made a commitment to take care of her and provide for her for as long as she lives.

In the interest of full disclosure though, I should say that I'm currently wearing this shirt:

You seem to be the number 1 cat fan on the forum ;D. I've had lots of cats in the past, subhanallah each had its own unique identity, one was crazy naughty the other was extremely quite and boring, however none of them survived my mom's strict standards of cleanliness, they all got kicked out :hmm:.
Maybe you can provide us with a list of the different cat breeds and how to identify one's cat.

Assalamu alaykum,

I have a dwarf hamster named Fajr and a rabbit named Dixie. And I treat them both as children...specially Faji...but that's how it goes when you live by yourself and all you have is the pet around lol...

We have a dog, a golden retriever.

Actually I'm really a 'cat person' rather than a 'dog person', and I'm especially fond of Siamese and Burmese, but unfortunately my step-daughter is VERY allergic to cats, so a dog it had to be. He's not so bad as dogs go!

aww, that's too bad. Aside from the shedding, the Squeakster is quite clean. She gives herself a complete bath at least 4 times a day ;D

It's really easy to identify cats - 99 times out of 100, they're just a plain old mutt :p Here in the US, we call them domestic short hairs (DSH) or domestic long hairs (DLH), depending on how long their coat is.

Many run of the mill, average cats have distinct features of purebreds, but in general (at least in the western cat fancy world, which is what I'm familiar with), unless it's got pedigreed parents (ie you can trace the breed of the ancestors of the cat back quite aways), it's just a plain old cat. Squeaky is a DSH, but that doesn't mean she's any less awesome than a pedigreed cat

There are several cat fancy organizations that define what standards a purebred should hold to. The cats really are gorgeous.

I considered a fish, considering I'm scared of every other living and moving creature besides the human race and ants.

But then to take care of it.. Plus I remember once I Was at my cousin's house and he overfed the fishy.. And it died. imsad right before our eyes too, I think. He told me he flushed it down the toilet or something.

For some reason, goldfish don't tend to live that long. I don't know how to properly care for them besides feeding them so that's why I don't think I'll get one.

This is a picture from this weekend. While I was attempting to cook, the Squeakster decided she'd like to roll around on the floor, blocking the fridge and look cute in a bid for attention.

I got some very interesting visual images in my head as I was reading this post. I almost laughed but I realized the poor guinea pig was probably terrified so I stopped myself. Glad u saved him. Some lessons we must learn the hard way. :)

I want a hamster but i am not sure if they bite.
I have heard a couple of really not-so-good stories about hamsters. :skeleton: If you get one, I would advise to get just one and not two but if you do get two make sure they are the same gender. The main idea is, avoid letting them mate. I'll stop there.
I think a guinea pig is better. We had them growing up and we loved them. They are extremely fertile which we thought was cool (more pets) but my parents probably didn't. :)

Some cats (about 20 last count), most are feral cats and not really pets as they do bite. We have I think, 12 tame house cats, various breeds, Siamese, munchkin, Cymeracs, Maine Coon, domestic short hair and domestic long hair.

The feral cats usually stay out doors but with the cold tmperatures they been coming in, we can't touch them without getting bit or scratched. they are a bit wild.

And 14 horses the horses aren't really pets, but 2 we use mostly for riding. The others are our breeding herd, we raise horses. With the abundance of wild life we see daily don't really need to own any pets. Lots of critters out here. Some not very friendly like a badger we came across a few months ago.

Brother Woodrow, do the feral cats get along with your house cats when they come in or do they not have any contact with each other? Just curious.

I used to hate pets because I was allergic but one day I found a kitten and just loved it. I kept him outside from the beginning so he was used to it and he loved it! He would stay in the garage during the winter, and when I would let him out daily he would even roll around in the snow!!!
When we moved into a new house he got rid of all the snakes and mice that were in that area (heavily wooded area with some fields nearby so there were lots of snakes and mice)
He got into all out wars with the crows too. Loved him.
Sadly, when we moved again, he didnt like it where we moved (very suburban area-no woods for him to explore :( ) so he kept running away back to the old house until eventually we gave up. The new owner tells us often that she sees him in the yard. The neighbors must feed him!

Now we have two other cats. One is all black, hes quiet and very clean. Comes in to the garage every night during the winter time.

Then theres the other cat we just got last summer. He was an abandoned kitten we found in the parking lot of one of the buildings my family owns. Poor thing was starving so my brother brought him home. We were gonna give him away but we decided to keep him. He constantly plays with the other cat. They wrestle with eachother all the time its hilarious!!! He loves being outside more though and sometimes doesnt come in to the garage no matter how much we coax him. Oh well.

Love having them around though. The thing about animals is they love you no matter who or what you are. They adore you even. Having pets is actually healthy for people emotionally. Sometimes after a not so great day playing with the cats gets me in a better mood.
Kinda of like the way plants do for some people. :) sry i wrote so much

No contact with the house cats. a bit too risky. Outside of being wild there is always a chance one might be diseased. Fortunately rabies is not a big concern here. but there are other diseases they can carry such as distemper or feline leukemia. We and the 6 smallest cats are living in the Winnebago. Th six larger cats have the upstairs of the house. One room is heated with a propane portable heater, we leave the basement open for the feral cats during the rough weather. Inshallah, we will be able to finish working on the house this spring and be able to move into it. Living in a Winnebago is crowded.
