US, Allies Tell Taliban About Offensive
February 06, 2010
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

KABUL - Thousands of U.S., British and Afghan troops are poised to launch the biggest offensive of the war in Afghanistan in a test of the Obama administration's new counterinsurgency strategy.

Military operations usually are intended to catch the enemy off guard, but for weeks U.S. and allied officials have been telling reporters about their forthcoming assault on Marjah, a Taliban-held town of 80,000 and drug-trafficking hub in southern poppy-growing Helmand province.

Senior NATO commanders and top Afghan officials have openly discussed the approximate time of Operation Moshtarak - the Dari language word for "together" - the size of the force and their objectives in news conferences, interviews and news releases that have been disseminated around the world and posted on government Web sites. Leaflets have been airdropped on the town.

so all the taliban have to do is lie low, keep a few fighters for small skirmishes, wait a few weeks, or even months, then move back in. the never ending story. the taliban will even get new recruits as a result of innocent civillians being killed and injured.

the taliban will never be defeated by the millitary!!!!!!! sheesh, after more than 8 years you would think they understood this by now, add that to the 10 years of the soviets!!!!

I agree with Woodrow. But it appears that some have no limits or don't acknowledge not transgressing limits.

2:190 (Y. Ali) Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.

Killing Women, Children and non-Combatants are off-limits.

Narrated 'Abdullah:

During some of the Ghazawat of the Prophet a woman was found killed. Allah's Apostle disapproved the killing of women and children.
Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 257:

Narrated Ibn 'Umar During some of the Ghazawat of Allah's Apostle a woman was found killed, so Allah's Apostle forbade the killing of women and children.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 258:

Remember Hanif, there is only one group in this war that is purposefully targetting non-combatants and that is the Taliban.

Then why are we doing something that almost guarantees their numbers will increase?
Looks more like this attack is designed to target civilians and give the Taliban time and warning to leave the area.

The US Central Command stated they wanted to allow Afghan civilians the opportunity to separate themselves from the Taliban and not be used as a shield or allow the Taliban to hide within the civilians. The Marja Offensive is called by the US Military Operation Cobra's Anger.

Even if you use Al-Jazeera as a source of information some will continue to be in denial and label anyone reporting factual occurrences as the support of Kufr. The Ummah is allowing the voice of a few to speak for many. Silence is approval.

Even though this is is a bit silly from a NATO point of view as it destroys the element of surprise, at least it's morally right as it allows civilians to leave and some members of the Taliban to surrender as opposed to being killed.

Taliban are stoics and can make do with very little, they always have that is why they survive and continue to...

question is can the pickled pork feet, monday night football loving morally decayed effete withstand it for the cause of freedom fries and larger stadiums?

I doubt it..

8:36 Behold, those who are bent on denying the truth are spending their riches in order to turn others away from the path of God; and they will go on spending them until they become [a source of] intense regret for them; and then they will be overcome! And those who [until their death] have denied the truth shall be gathered unto hell.

Let them spend their money and waste the lives of their stupid youths, they'll gain nothing but heartache and eternal hell insha'Allah..

You mean when the Tamils used people as human shields? There have been some incidences of that by the Taliban, although hopefully letting civilians leave will make it harder.

indeed, that's what always do... They themselves creates a problem & then comeup with a so-called "solution" ... They purposely attack civilians to create more ppl angry & fighting, chaos is their goal....

Like, when they started attack on Afghanistan, they were entering from pakistani side BUT instead of going from East to West, they moved northwest to southeast*, in order to push Taliban into Pakistan & Iran,,, so that later they can say Oh!!! we now have taliban in Pakistan & Iran so we'll attack these...

Makes me think they plan to use "daisy cutters". May all of the innocents take heed and leave.

One was clearly weighed against the other (although it's perhaps optimistic to say 'morally right' rather than 'more politically acceptable'), and I think the right decision was probably made. It seems to be the pattern these days, as similar 'announcements' of offensives were made in both Sri Lanka and Pakistan relatively recently although, in the former case, it seemed to do far more harm to non-combatants than good, as S<Chowdhury pointed out.

The US Military and allies are announcing every move. Are they expecting casualties even before the execution of the offensive?

It was reported that US Marines and Afghan troops surrounded a compound and requested the Taliban release the woman and children. Al-Jazeera site is silent regarding this report? Does anyone have a report from Muslim sources?
