A man described as the top Afghan Taliban military commander and named as Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has been captured in Pakistan, US officials say.

He was seized in a morning raid on a madrassa near Karachi by Pakistan's ISI intelligence service on 8 February, a security source told the BBC.

The government has yet to confirm the arrest; the Taliban have denied it.

The capture comes amid a major Nato-led offensive against the Taliban in southern Afghanistan.

While the raid on Madarassa Khuddamul Quran - near the Nooriabad Industrial Estate some 45km (28 miles) from Karachi - was led by the ISI, it is not clear at the moment whether US officials were involved.

Correspondents say Mullah Baradar is reported to be in charge of all long-term strategic military planning for the Taliban in southern Afghanistan and, if confirmed, his arrest will have a very big effect on the Taliban's ability to conduct the insurgency there.
Things have been looking rather grim for the Taliban over the past few weeks. Now, with the arrest of this man, one can't help but feel a little sorry for them.

how many leaders have been killed or captured? it doesnt matter, another one will take his place.

and if things have been so grim, then why are western powers talking about peace talks with the taliban, paying them off, and getting them into government?!!!!!!!! if i was a betting man, id say things arent going that bad with the taliban, when the other side starts offering conditions when they first said NO CONDITIONS ALL OUT DESTRUCTION, then that sounds like your winning.

plus he was in pakistan, do you really think he was controlling the fighters in afghanistan? their daily movements, telling them where to hit, strike, fight etc etc? offcourse not, so it doesnt really hurt the ground fighters too much.

Even the US government says he was not a tactical leader, more of an overall strategic one. Local commanders controlled the tactical side.

This arrest will have little to no effect on what is going on in Afghanistan. The Taliban has the upper hand because they know that time is on their side.

Obama said in his Berlin speech ..."Terrorists trained in Karachi, might explode nuclear bomb in Paris"... Bob Graham said US might get a nuclear attack from Pakistani "terrorists" within 5 years...!!!

Now "terrorists" are being transported to Karachi by black water & poped up in public & so Obama is proving right, "it is Karachi"... So be asured if a nuke explodes in West it was made by Pakistani scientist using material from Russian states & carried out by "terrorists" trained in Karachi... Exactly as Obama predicted...!!!

How do they know everything beforehand so accurately....???

The answer is obvious. Obama hates Muslims even more than Bush did, so he will set this all up then nuke Paris and blame it on Pakistan so he can declare war on more Muslims.

You're a genius.
