Gordon Brown has urged voters to take a "second look" at Labour as he unveiled his election campaign themes.

Under the slogan "a future fair for all", he told a rally in Coventry that Labour would be "change makers" who stand up for "the many not the few".

And he attacked the Tories, saying they would put the economy "at risk".

Tory leader David Cameron said Labour had "badly damaged" the UK, while the Lib Dems said there had been a "total failure to make Britain fairer".

'Team of one'

Mr Brown opened his speech by stressing he had an "experienced" team behind him - paying tribute to senior cabinet ministers including Harriet Harman and Lord Mandelson - while the Conservatives were down to a "team of one".

Setting out his future aims, the prime minister said: "First, we must secure the recovery, not put it at risk. Second, we must support new industries and future jobs.

I do hope voters look at Labour a second time and least deduce it to be a far better option to the Conservatives. God forbid the Tories gaining power.

I'd agree with 'economy' and 'family' but I don't think healthcare and education are in decline. I still cherish my NHS appointments and thank God for my brilliant sixth form. And I also don't think that any party, especially the Conservatives, are going to deal with the current economy very well if they come into government.

I don't have anything against the Labour party policies but its the people mentality who believe a change is needed. You just get bored with the same policies and concepts in politics. . They don't have no creativity.

It is because of the economy that the healthcare and education is declining.

Catholic Church election advice seen as endorsement for Tories

The Roman Catholic Church will this week present the Conservatives with an election boost by urging voters to consider the issues of marriage and the family when deciding which party to support.

In a controversial intervention in the political arena, bishops will publish a report warning that Britain has suffered from "increased family breakdown" in recent years, and that the cost to society has been "tragic". While the Church's 10-page document, offering advice to the country's four million Catholics, is not explicitly partisan, it will be seen as critical of Labour and as supportive of the Tories who have put marriage at the centre of their campaigning.

In the report, seen by The Sunday Telegraph, the bishops argue for a "revitalising of politics", warn that religion should not be "reduced to devotional acts" and stress the need to protect the freedom to express belief. It follows a series of high-profile clashes between Catholic leaders and the Government over the promotion of laws which critics say have threatened religious liberty in Britain.

The paper's emphasis on marriage will echo David Cameron's expressed support for married couples and is in contrast to Labour's claims that parents need not be wed to create happy families. A church source said last night: "The document is very much in line with Tory policy and it will be open to that interpretation, although it is not intended to be explicitly political in either direction."

The advice could influence the outcome of the election in key marginal seats, particularly in north-west England where the Catholic Church is particularly strong. The paper, which will be published on Wednesday for circulation to every diocese in England and Wales, is called Choosing the Common Good. The title is a nod to a similarly controversial 1996 document, titled simply Common Good, that was viewed as backing Labour ahead of the following year's election which swept Tony Blair to power.

The Church has refrained from stepping into election campaigns since then, but there has been growing disquiet at its highest levels over the direction the country has taken under Gordon Brown. Since he succeeded Tony Blair as Prime Minister, Catholics have clashed with the Government over a number of proposals that have been seen to restrict religious freedom.

Anyone who thinks Britain has declined in terms of healthcare since 1997 is living on a different planet. Take that from a frequent end user both before and after... what was then months on waiting lists is now weeks and even days.

As to the economy, our biggest problem in recovering from what is a worldwide recession is our emphasis on service and financial sectors rather than productive industry; coal, steel, automobile production, shipbuilding and so on. It was Thatcher who destroyed those, not Labour.

And as to 'change', the Tories have a moron as shadow-chancellor, and economic policies that will strangle recovery at birth. Not to mention their latest wheeze about the 'people's bonus' on selling off the banks. What this means, of course, to those with short-term memories or not old enough to remember, is selling off what everybody owns to the few that can afford to buy the shares (at undervalue) , who then flog them off to make a fast buck while the shares end up with the same institutional investors they should have been sold to in the first place at market rate. In other words, it's stealing from the poor to give to the rich, just as proposed tax cuts will be. Same old Tories; no thanks. :raging:
