All UK airports have been given the go-ahead to reopen, the Transport Secretary Lord Adonis has said.

He said that, after six days of disruption due to the cloud of volcanic ash, it would now be up to airlines to bring schedules back on track.

The statement was delivered after consultation with the Civil Aviation Authority and a reassessment of the risk to aircraft from the ash.

Some restrictions will remain, but they will be much smaller than before.

Dame Deirdre Hutton, of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), said there had been detailed consultation with experts to reassess the tolerance of planes to the ash cloud.

The CAA said it was a "situation without precedent" and that decisions had been made based on "thorough gathering of data and analysis".
Fantastic news that UK airspace is finally open. Good news for all the poor stranded souls. At least my prayers have been answers.
