The Day You Will See Your Lord, Most High, With Your Very Own Eyes

The believers will be blessed with seeing Allaah, their Creator, their Master, their Lord Most High!

Ibn Taymiyah mentiones the proofs for this in his beautiful book “al-Aqeedah Al-Waasitiyah”. What follows is the proofs mentioned (by Ibn Taymiyah) and followed by the commentry by Ibn Uthaymeen:

Ibn Taymiyah mentions:

And the proof for this from the qur’aan is below:

Allaah has said;

[Some] faces that day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord.” [Qiyaamah 75:22-23]

On adorned couches, observing.” [Al-Mutaffiffeen 83:35]

“For them who have done good is the best [reward] – and extra.” [Yoonus 10:26]

They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.” [Qaaf 50:35]

And this is plentiful in the book of Allaah. Whoever ponders over the Qur’aan, seeking guidance from it, will have the path of truth clarified for him. [End quote]

Below, is the commentary of Ibn Uthaymeen on his notes on Al-Aqeeda Al-Waasityah:

Notes: The slave seeing their Lord, the blessed, the Most High

The book and the sunnah affirm the slave seeing his Lord.

The evidence from the book is:

For them who have done good is the best [reward] – and extra.” [Yoonus 10:26]

The prophet (saw) explained the word “extra” to mean looking towards the face of Allaah, the Most High.

The evidence from the sunnah is the prophet’s statement:

“You will see your Lord as you see the full moon in a clear night, you will not be impaired in seeing Him. If you are able not to allow yourself to be overcome for the prayer before the rising of the sun or for the prayer before the setting of the sun, then do so.” [Bukhaari 554, Muslim 633]

The analogy that is set up in this hadeeth is between the two visions and not netween what is beeing seen because the letter of analogy (kamaa) is interacting with the verb of seeing (…) that has been transformed from the verbal noun. Furthermore, there is nothing like Allaah.

What is intended by the two prayers that are mentioned in this hadeeth are the fajr and ‘asr prayers.

The seeing of Allaah will be in the hereafter and not in this world, due to His saying:

You cannot see Me.” [Al-'Araaf 7:143]

And the saying of the prophet (saw):

“Know that you will never see your Lord until you die.” [Muslim 2931], Tirmidhee [2235]

The disbelievers will not be allowed to see Allaah due to His saying:

No! Indeed, from their Lord on that day they will be partitioned.” [Mutaffiffeen 83:15]

Ahl as-sunnah have interpreted this seeing to be the seeing of the eyes due to the following:

1) Allaah has annexed the seeing with the face, which is the place for the eyes, He said:

[Some] faces that day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord.” [Qiyaamah 75:22-23]

2) It has come in the hadeeth:

You will see your Lord with your eyes.” [Bukhaari 7435]

The people who make distortions (changes in the text and/or meaning) have interpreted the seeing to be rewards, meaning, “You will see the rewards of your Lord.” This interpretation can be refuted in three ways:

a) it is in opposition to the apparant wording,

b) it is in opposition to the consensus of the salaf, and

c) there is no evidence for it.

[End note]

And how beautiful will that day be! The day we meet and see our Lord who we aim to please every second of our lives. May Allaah keep us steadfast and make us die as Muslims, submitting our will to Him, ameen.
