On Tuesday, 15 June from mid-afternoon onwards, a group of EDL members congregated at a pub in the Whitechapel area of Tower Hamlets near the East London Mosque.
During the course of the day they began to shout racist abuse at the local Muslim community as they were walking by. Upon being called a Paki, a youth punched one of the EDL members and a scuffle broke out. The police were called as a crowd began to gather. Both parties were kept apart as the police cordoned off the area.
The shouting of racial and discriminatory abuse continued as the police struggled to control both parties and news of the EDL presence spread throughout the borough.
By about 6pm, the local community, consisting of mainly Muslim youths numbering over a thousand, led the police to realise that the situation could turn into a huge-scale public disorder incident. They moved in and dispersed the EDL members, forcing them out via the local Underground station.
Another scuffle ensued where numerous punches were thrown as the EDL were moved on.
A number of community leaders attended the scene including Cllr Luthfur Rahman (last year's Leader of Tower Hamlets Council) and he tried to reassure the community, asking them to remain calm, especially as the EDL have threatened to attend the East London Mosque on Sunday 20th June although the police are now informing the community that this march has been cancelled.
Syed Tohel, spokesperson for Islamic Forum Europe stated, 'No arrests were made although a young male of Bangladeshi origin was attacked during the scuffle earlier and received minor injuries and this was later reported to police.'
He stated that, ‘The community should remain vigilant at all times and urged that any counter-protests against the EDL should remain peaceful.’
He added, ‘The Muslim community in Tower Hamlets will not tolerate such racist behaviour and that the community does not want the EDL to march outside the East London Mosque as they are known to carry out vicious attacks on Mosques.'
MPACUK Comment: Do you think the uprising of the EDL is due to a lack of political participation from the Muslim community? How do you think this should be countered? Let us know what happened if you were present during this incident.
