What is the proper Islamic form of relationship you should have with your debtors, specially if he/she is a relative?

If a relative owes you large some of money is it permissible to accept gifts, meals etc. from him/her? I was once told that to do so would be like accepting interest for the loan, but isn't that a bit harsh?

If there is someone who know about this or is good at searching for answers in Islam q-a, could you please clear this up?

Also if a loan was in cash, can it be paid back in kind?
