Salaamu Alaikum,

I have a big problem on my hands and I am unsure of how to deal with it. When I was younger, I wasn't very religious. I always beleived in Islam but not to the extent I do now. I am ashamed to say I once masturbated as well during Ramadan and what was worse was I then did not know of the need for the ghusl of Janabat till I was 20 years old (so not till 4 years later :exhausted )

I am so confused as to what I need to do now. I am trying to pray as many qadha prayers as I can to make up for the prayers that I would have lost but what should I do in terms of the fastings? I have enough money saved up to be able to pay one kaffarrah (through islamic relief) but i don't have any money right now as I am a student and got no job. I did actually fast during those four ramadans as well and I prayed and stuff as well since I did not know that my prayers were not going to be valid.

What should I do? Is paying one kaffarrah enough or do I need to pay more than that? I am planning to fast again but an imam I spoke to said, the fasts would be valid. That was from the imam Ali Foundation London website. Please help me and tell me what I need to do even if it does require paying more kaffarrah just so that I can maybe save up money as I go along.

Since I am a girl , I don't know if it would be possible for me to fast for 60 days since obviously that needs to be done continuosly and I would get my periods.

Please help me and tell me exactly what needs to be done :exhausted

Asalaamu Alaikum Wr Wb, my sister it is a very good thing to feel remorseful of ones sinful past as this is a sign of imaan. As long as you repent sincerely feeling utterly remorseful with the intention of NEVER to repeat such acts will find Allah most merciful. Allah loves giving forgiveness and his mercy outweigh's his anger. So always repent to Allah as Allah loves it when his slave repents to him in meekness and humbleness.

The person who misses a fast can spend their entire life making up for the fast but they would not be able to, such is the reward of Fard fasting. If a person broke their fast by purposly ejaculating then they will have to fast one day to make up for this day, but do not have to offer any expiation. That person must also feeling very remorseful and sincerely repent and NEVER repeat such despicable act again.

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Majmoo’ (6/377); If he spoils his fast with something other than intercourse, such as eating, drinking, masturbating or foreplay that leads to ejaculation, then there is no expiation because the text speaks only of intercourse, and these things do not come under the same heading.

However if one willingly breaks a Ramadhaan fast without a valid Shar’ee reason by eating drinking etc and one has no excuse like for e.g. illness, etc. then one must keep a Qadhaa fast in lieu thereof. Furthermore, as Kaffaarah, 60 consecutive fasts will have to be kept. If one willingly breaks a fast out of Ramadhaan, then only Qadhaa should be kept without Kaffaarah. However, if one breaks a fast due to a valid Shar’ee reason, then only Qadhaa should be kept without Kaffaarah. This is irrespective of whether the fast was a Ramadhaan fast or not. (Raddul Muhtaar vol.2 pg.404; HM Saeed)

Therefore if you have ever broken any fasts in Ramadan from puberty until now with no valid excuse by eating drinking etc then you must make a kaffarah of fasting 60 days consecutively and you can only miss fast during these 60 days due to your menses and when your menses finish then you can resume fasting again. Any other reason for missing fasts like illness etc means that you have to do the 60 again. You only have to do one kaffarah for ALL the fasts you have ever broken in Ramadan due to eating drinking etc.

In regards to masterbation then you only have to make up for that particualr fast and there is no kaffarah for masterbation but this must NEVER be repeated again. As well as keeping the 60 fasts consecutively as kaffarah one must also keep all the fast one has ever missed or broken from puberty until now. One must make a sensible calculation as to all the fasts one has broken or missed from puberty until now. As winter is fast approaching there is no better time to start fasting inshallah.

Continue to pay back your debts to Allah in terms of making up for all your fard and wajib prayers and fard fasts from puberty until now. Do what you can manage and do not overburden yourself. You must not rush the qadha prayers as they will also be scrutinised and you mst pray it like it is a normal fard prayer.

Strive to be closer to Allah and do as much dhikr(remembrance) of Allah as you can. Also find tiome to recite the Qur'an along with its meanings and join a local sisters circle or halaqa as this will be beneficial for you and at the same time you will meet good and pious sisters as well as involving yourself with Muslim sisters as oppose to the company you previously kept.

Make much dua to Allah for him to make it easy for you and he does want you to be closer to him so you should be so happy and thankful to Allah and make the best of every second of your life as out time is too short and we will regret the seconds we wasted without the remembrance of Allah and in doing good deeds to please Allah.

So learn from the past and take good from it and do things better now and the future for that is what matters most!

I'm a bit confused by this statement. So does this mean that I do need to pay kaffarah or not? I did break a fast during Ramadan due to masturbation. Also, is it possible for me to pay for 60 people to be fed twice rather than fast 60 days? Would that be okay. I was going to pay kaffarah via the islamic-relief website where you can choose the option to pay kaffarah.

Can you please tell me what you think of this? The reason I opted to do this via a website was because I don't personally know where I can go and feed 60 muslims personally (or even non muslims for that matter).

Also, are there any special requirements in order for the 60 days fasting to be valid? For instance, do I have to start on the 1st of an Islamic month or can I begin at any point? I was thinking that I probably can't start right now since before my 60 days would be over, Hajj would be upon us and after that Eid and as far as I am aware, we can not fast during Eid?

Also I don't know what Dua' I am meant to make for fasting Kaffarrah fasts?

Having said that, is it still going to be permissible for me to pay for 60 people to be fed ?

Asalaamu Alaikum Wr Wb, apart from the time you masterbated during a fast in Ramadan have you ever broken any fast by eating or drinking during a fast in any Ramadan from puberty until now?

No never. hat day when I did masturbate, I was about 14 maybe I think (or 15). I was not aware of the need for Kaffarah and I think I must have known that masturbating wasn't a good thing to do when fasting but not the extent of the haram definietly. Even then, I completed that fast as well and have never actually ate/drank or anything during a fast.

Having said that, like I mentioned in the post, I was unaware of the ghusl for janabat till I was 20 so I did remain a junub for many years :( However, an imam i spoke to from the Imam Ali foundation London has said that if I was unaare of this ruling my fastings would be valid.

I'm really confused because that imam and also another website I came across (ask imam by Mufti Ebraham Desai) says that I do not need to pay kaffarah and even if i do, I can opt to either fast or pay the money.

Asalaamu alaikum, as mentioned in my previous post there is no kaffaarah for masterbation you only have to make up the fast. Kaffaarah only applies when a fast was deliberatley broken by eating or drinking so if you have never broken any fast in any Ramadan from puberty until now by eating or drinkingthen you do not have to do Kaffaarah but just make up for the fast you broke due to masterbation.

Also sister the website you were referring: Imam Ali website is actually Shia and we being Sunni's do not refer to Shia websites or imams for Islamic information but we refer to our own scholars so stick with Mufti Ebrahim Desai.

Of you ever have any questions or need help with anything at all then please do not hesitate to ask.

Alhamdhulillah brother. Thank you for clearing up that information for me. I'm sorry to be bothering you about this but just to be clear: I don't have to pay kaffarah but I have to make up that qadha fast and that would be it?

Also thank you for clearing things up regarding the imam ali website. It explains why things seemed to be a bit contradicting and confusing at times.

Can I just ask though - what do I do about the fact that I was unknowingly a junub for 4 years then (maybe more)? What should I do regarding those fasts? Should I just do them qadha now? Even though I was a junub, I still fasted and prayed and stuff during the ramdans cz I was not aware that there was a ghusl of janabat. I never broke a fast without a valid reason (like hayd or illness). Can you please help me on this matter?

This is actually the paragraph that confused me cz you have said that there is no kaffarah for masturbation, but then you have mentioned that 'As well as keeping the 60 fasts consecutively as kaffarah one must also keep all the fast one has ever missed or broken from puberty until now'. Could you please clarify the link there please

Asalaamu Alaikum Wr Wb, i apologise for the late reply as i asked a scholar Sheikh Mufti Yusuf Mullan in regards to your question and he replied that your fasts will be accepted even though you went into them in the state of impurity unless you broke them by masterbation or by eating or drinking etc. Since you stated that you only ever masterbated during one fast and that you have never broken a fast by eating or drinking then you will only have to make up for that one fast. However the Salaah's that you missed and those that your read in the state of impurity will have to be repeated.

And Allah knows best in all matters

Asalaamu Alaikum,

I meant as in all the fasts that one has ever broken due to eating or drinking then one has to only do one kaffaarah of 60 days of fasting and also one qadha fast of every fast broken. This does not apply to you as you have never broken your fast from eating or drinking and have only ever broken one due to masterbation by which kaffaarah does not apply but a qadha of the fast will suffice.

And Allah knows best in all matters

Alhamdulillah brother Hamza. You have been such a big help in this matter. I hope you don't mind if I just ask two more things and thaat will be the end of it.

1. I have broken some qadha fasts by eating or drinking. I'm assuming Kaffarah doesn't apply to those? However, there was one year when I broke some qadha fasts by eating and then before the next Ramadan was upon us, I did not make up for those fasts. I have since then made up for them but is there a Kaffrrah on me for this? I hope this question made sense.

2. I am trying to rememeber back to whether I only masturbated that one day during the Ramadan. I am a 100% sure I did not break a fast during Ramadan by eating or drinking. However, if there were more than one day when i masturbated during a fast, should I just make qadha fasts for those days and no Kaffarah would be upon me?

May Allah bless you for all your help and patience you have shown in helping me. THank you
