Salam alaikum.

What are the ways to increase barakah in the home in all good things including finances?
And what can reduce the barakah?
Jazakallah khair.

Asalaamu Alaikum Wr Wb, jazakallah khayran for your brilliant question. Firstly what brings Barakah to the home is that the obligatory duties are being fulfilled. This means all in the house should be fulfilling their fard prayers and fard fasts in Ramadan as well as paying their Zakaah and if one can afford it then doing Hajj. Not paying Zakaah will take away blessings from income and bring the anger and wrath of Allah. Sameway if one can afford to go Hajj yet one does not go without a valid reason then again this is a major sin.

Women should pray their fard at home whilst men should pray the fard prayer at the Masjid and can pray the rest at home in order to bring blessings into the home. To bring more blessings into the home one should also increase in nawafil prayers particularly the Tahajjud prayer in the latter part of the night which is the most reward and blessed of all nawafil prayers and brings a lot of blessings into the home. Also other nawafil prayers should also be read.

There should be abundant Dhikr in the home in the form of glorifying Allah and contemplating and pondering over his creations. The Qur'an should also be recited as much as is possible. Surah Waaqiya brings blessing to the income and prevents poverty. Reciting Surah Baqarah in the home or even leaving a tape playing Surah Baqarah is very effective in removing shaythan from ones home. Reciting the Qur'an also brings angels into the home as they sit and listen to recitation of the Qur'an.

When one enters the house then one should do so with the right foot and say Asalaamu Alaikum and the angels reply to this and it brings blessings into the home and prevents shaythan from entering. Ayatul Kursi should also be recited upon entry and when leaving the home as this also prevents shaythan from entering. Bismillah should always be recited upon food otherwise shaythan partakes in meals and this destroys the blessings in the food.

Adkhaar for entering the home:

Muslim reported in his Saheeh that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When any one of you enters his home and mentions the Name of Allaah when he enters and when he eats, the Shaytaan says: ‘You have no place to stay and nothing to eat here.’ If he enters and does not mention the name of Allaah when he enters, [the Shaytaan] says, ‘You have a place to stay.’ If he does not mention the name of Allaah when he eats, [the Shaytaan says], ‘You have a place to stay and something to eat.’” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, al-Musnad, 3/346; Muslim, 3/1599).

Abu Dawood reported in his Sunan that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If a man goes out of his house and says, ‘Bismillaah, tawakkaltu ‘ala Allaah, laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa Billaah (In the name of Allaah, I put my trust in Allaah, there is no help and no strength except in Allaah),’ it will be said to him, ‘This will take care of you, you are guided, you have what you need and you are protected.’ The Shaytaan will stay away from him, and another shaytaan will say to him, ‘What can you do with a man who is guided, provided for and protected?’” (Reported by Abu Dawood and al-Tirmidhi. Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 499)

Siwaak

Imaam Muslim reported in his Saheeh that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) entered his house, the first thing he would do was use siwaak.” (Reported by Muslim, Kitaab al-Tahaarah, chapter 15, no. 44).

There should be taleem(learning about Islam) in the house at least for a little while each day like even reading a couple of hadith or ayah's from the Qur'an for the purpose of teaching and learning as this brings a lot of blessings into the house. The family should always get together to talk about Islam and the greateness of Allah as angels descend upon those houses where there are gatherings of learning about Islam and in the glorification and remembrance of Allah.

But bare in mind angels do not enter those houses where dogs reside or where there are pictures of animate objects. In order to rbing blessings into ones life and home then one must thank Allah as much as possible and be an appreciative slave as Allah gives more to those who are thankful so those who want an increase in their sustainance should thank Allah profusely or as much as is possible.

One must keep away from lying, backbiting and slandering in ones home as well as abusive and foul language. The tongue must be guarded and used to glorify and please Allah and not in sin. This way the help of Allah will come into ones life.

Too much decoration should also be avoided as it is best to keep the house simple. Non mahram men and women should not mix when in the house and should be seated seperatley even if non mahram family members are around. Smoking should not be permitted as well as the use of any haraam substances. Immoral people should not be allowed to enter the home just like dirt and impurities should be kept out of the house. There should be the establishment of good manners in ones home as well as a good relationship of playfulness and joking between husband and wife and ones children.

One should also be careful of the use of TV and the internet to ensure no haraam is being watched. The sameway one should be aware of the radio and stereo system to ensure haraam music is no being played in the house. Any symbol of any othr faith or religion should be removed from the house as well as family portraits and pictures on the walls etc

Dua is very important so do as much dua as possible for Allah to bring blessings and noor(divine light) into ones home and rid ones home of darkness, sin and shaythan and to fill it with his remembrance and his angels. Much dua should also be made for Allah to give guidance to all those who occupy ones home especially if they are not practising. If an truly Islamic atmosphere is created at home then it is more likely that others in the house will respond positively to this inshallah.

And Allah knows best in all matters
