Hi,

Prayer mat is fine in any colour and style as long as there is no faces or anything like that on it. However, it is not strictly necessary to have one. You can pray on any clean surface.

Likewise with the prayer beads ('tasbih'), not strictly necessary. Usually, people will pray some words advised by Prophet peace be upon him aided by the beads for counting purposes.

For example, we are advised to recite 'SubhanAllah' (Glory be to Allah) 33 times, followed by "Alhamdulilah" (Praise be to Allah) 33 times, followed by "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest) 34 times after each fardh (compulsory) prayer (of the five daily prayers).

There are usually 100 beads in each tasbih which correspond to this above format. I.e. there would be a marker after ever 33.

a prayer mat is just a clean bit off cloth you pray on

prayer beads are something you can use to count your praises of Allah, you can use your fingers instead

doesn't matter what colour or style they are

Serena,
You can choose any color or style you like :) But it is advised the a mat doesnt have alot of pictures that may distract your attention while performing prayers :) Same thing goes to beads. Tell us later what colors you chose :)

Have you tried your local mosque ? cos they'll prob even give you one free. We always get them given as presents, when some1 gets back from mecca.

No it doesnt matter. As far as im aware, you could even read on a clean towel/blanket as long as its clean, but im not sure? maybe one of the other members will be able to elaborate further.

Again, nothing, you could prob get one from the mosque, and if you dont have one, it doesnt matter, you can count on your fingers.

Sis you shouldnt delay saying the shahada, although i understand where your coming from. How long do you know your gona be around for ? god forbid but how do you know when death will strike you ? at least if you say the shahada, allah would know your intentions of wanting to change, and you would be free of past sins. If you can dont delay it. The other things you can learn as you go on. Once you've said the shahada, try and go to the local mosque/sisters circles the sisters there will only be too happy to help you.

Sister Serena it is very good to hear that you have made this decision. If you don't mind me asking can you tell what made you revert or guide me to a thread in which you may have made that decision?

And regarding prayer mats and beads, don't stress too much over them. Especially prayer beads (they are not necessary at all, many use fingers to recite the suggested words) And prayer mat is also something which isn't a must, as long as you pray on a clean surface you are fine. The messenger (pbuh) used to pray on the floor.

What you should be thinking about is maybe a hijab, burkha and telling your parents?

Let us know how you get on.

You can use any clean piece of cloth as prayer mat. Just put it over a carpet so you feel comfortable when doing sujood and sitting.
"prayer mats" that are commercially sold of course have been specially designed and made to fit the length of your body when doing sujood.
Pick a prayer mat that does not have too much going on its surface as it could distract you from your concentration, and pick a nice thick one if you use it just at home, and pick thin one if you want to carry it inside your bag.

as for prayer beads, it is not necessary. I use my fingers, as it is also a sunnah.

first a praying mat is just so you know you have somthing clean it is not a must to have one to pray.. as for color and style then no faces on it and the last design the better for the reason it doesnt distract you when you are praying so somthing very simple is best

Same thing for prayer beads... i already asked what they were for... but what is the difference in these?
as for the beads well then it is best to use your fingers for the prophet used his fingers and adviced us to use our fingers ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr said, ‘I saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) counting the tasbeeh on his right hand.’”
i know i know... i have been told that i won't earn everything before i say the shahada.... but some things i want to have a better handle on.. especially before i decide to tell my parents.... i advice you like all of us do not to delay the shahada this is first and most important and we will countiune to advice you this due to its importance the prayer rug the beads dont add nothing to Islam but the shahada is Islam hence we advice you not to delay it i am not saying say it if you don't believe it what im saying is if you know it to be truth then take the shahada no need to tell your parents once you feel good about tell them tell them its like this if i were to ask you to testify that the sky is blue or that water is wet you would hence if you know that Islam is the true religion there shouldn't be a reason in delaying it i ask Allah to guide you and us to the truth Ameen
