My story begins at around 15-14 age, when I was at high school, I was at my worst sinful days. I used to steal often. Now that I've become a devout muslim Alhamdulillah, Im in constant depression about what I have done. Some objects that I have stolen can be returned back, if I can put together my courage that is. However, other things that ive stolen cant be returned. I pray to Allah that he may forgive me but I know that I have to ask forgivness from the ones Ive stolen, the problem is I dont even know their faces :(

Sometimes I feel like dying and meet the lord and find out if I have been forgiven. Please, If there is someone who has a similar story, maybe could give me some advice?

Asalaamu Alaikum, jazakallahu khayran for sharing this with us. Having feelings of guilt is clearly a sign of imaan but one should balance having the hope that Allah will forgive a person for their sins and fear that he won't. One should not have more fear or more hope but keep a good balance between the two.

If you know the person that you stole from in the past and you still have the item then you must return it to them immediatley as it is their property which they have a right over and we are commanded to return any property which is not ours to the rightful owner. Just be honest and upfront about the fact that you took it when you were very young and immature and have changed immensley since then and inshallah they will understand.

If you do not know the person/s you stole from in the past and you still have the item/s then you should give the item or its value to charity or for the benefit of Muslims as a whole. Then ask for forgiveness for the person/s you stole from if they were Muslim, or if you do not know if they were Muslim or not then just ask of Allah to forgive them if they were Muslim and to guide them to Islam if they were non Muslim.

If he happens to know the person or his in-heritors after having given the stolen thing as alms, he should then give a similar thing to them or give its value if it can be valued, and in this case the reward of what he has given as alms is for him not for the other person.

By sincerely repenting with remorse and with the intention of never repeating such an action again then you will find Allah most forgiving. Never forget that Allah is the Most Merciful. Anyone who does evil and then asks for forgiveness will find Allah Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surat an-Nisa':110) Hence, remember that Allah is the Most Merciful and the Ever-Forgiving, and pray to Him in hope.

No matter how serious the error you may have committed, and are in deeply remorse over it, it is not a reason for you to despair of Allah's forgiveness. Thus, no matter how guilty a person feels, he can always expect to find his Lord forgiving. In fact, the Qur'an informs us that it is only disbelievers who despair of Allah's mercy:

...Do not despair of solace from Allah. No one despairs of solace from Allah except for people who are disbelievers. (Surah Yusuf: 87)

On the other hand, never forget that no one can guarantee that he is worthy of Paradise. No one is safe from the punishment of his Lord. This is why, when calling on Allah, a person must hope for Allah's mercy, but also be in fear of losing His good pleasure.

We all learn from our mistakes in life for if we never made mistakes then how will we ever learn and become better people. We are who we are today from the failures and mistakes we have made in our lives. So learn from the past and take lessons from it. Repent to Allah always to forgive you for all of your sins and try your utmost to keep away from major sins in particular.

Focus on the present and future as the past has now gone so there is no need to keep reflecting on it. In fact you should thank Allah that he has given you guidance so that you can be the person you are today. Thank Allah always and strive to do everything in your day and life to please him and refrain from anything that may displease or anger him.

here is something similar but i still think you should consult a local scholar just so that you can get a more "tailored" advise that is specific to your situation.
