Turkish Uni Staff Sacked For Campus Porn Film Project
Three staff at Turkey's prestigious Bilgi University have been dismissed after news broke that Film School students produced a pornographic film on campus as part of a dissertation project. The department responsible was also shut down after the issue was discussed in the "Her Şey" ('Everything') program on Turkey’s NTV news channel, and local police began an investigation into possible criminal charges.
Bilgi University has suspended Prof. İhsan Derman, founder of the Department for Visual Design, and lecturers Ali Pekşen and Ahmet Atıf Akın in response to publication of the news. Bilgi is reputed to be one of the most liberal universities in Turkey and was among the first to ignore the ban on Muslim women wearing headscarves on campus.
Visual design student Deniz Özgün prepared a pornographic movie as his final project, as reported by the Tempo magazine last week, which published an interview with the Director and “actress” involved in the film. Özgün had advised his Professors that he wanted to make a pornographic film to demonstrate how synthetic the sexual scenes are within the genre.
