Assalaam to all bro.s& sis.s,

I've always wondered why there are physical pleasures in jannah like drinking, eating etc.
Isn't spiritual pleasure enough? Can someone explain this?

Wa alaykum salam

We will find the greatest pleasure on seeing Allah, in Jannah.

Wa alaikkum salaam...

I hope no one is gonna compell you to have physical pleasure...in the heaven...do you think so?
If you feel spiritual pleasure is enough... you will get that alone...If you wish to drink..you will drink.
All i want to say is ...you will get whateva you wish in there..and u will wish only what ALLAH has allowed to wish.

But If your is question is...
why cant ALLAH give us spiritual pleasure alone... and why is that HE he has mentioned about the physical pleasures.
Answer : Its beyond our (creation's) knowledge.

The Messenger (peace and blessings be unto him) said, “When the inhabitants of Paradise enter Paradise, Allah will say to them, ‘Do you want Me to give you anything more?’ They will reply, ‘Have You not made our faces bright? Have You not brought us into Paradise and moved us from Hell?’ Allah will then remove the Veil and they will feel that they have not been awarded anything dearer to them than looking at their Lord.”

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with physical pleasures. Allah Ta'aala has designed humans such that they seek them. However, this world is a test for us to see who obeys Allah's commands and who goes against them. And to test us, he has forbidden us certain things. Whats actually wrong here is disobeying Allah and not wanting to seek those pleasures. And Jannat is a reward for good deeds. Thats why Allah Ta'aala has filled it with all kinds of good stuff.
Spiritual and Physical pleasures are supposed to be two different things. I dont think they are meant to substitute for each other.

Good question. I wondered the same. In Christianity there are so many different views of what heaven is supposed to be like. I thought this bishops idea that righteous humans are going to be running around helping to build a new world order was interesting though. Check it out here.

Some days I suspect that the reason for the physical pleasures in Jannah to be there is so that we can see the greater value of the spiritual pleasures.

:sl::wa:

Paradise is a place where all human desires come true; it is a place just to enjoy and live in sheer bliss forever, thus physical pleasures will be there too, but it is said that the inhabitants of paradise will utter the praises of ALlah with every breath [there will be no effort [hardship] on their part, but it will just come out naturally] thus the spiritual will go hand in hand with the physical

the Prophet [saw] showed us that there is nothing wrong in physical pleausres as long as they are within the limits ALlah has allowed, and the limits in paradise will be broadened immensely, in order that people can reap the reward of their sacrfice on earth :statisfie

Assalaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Dear Brother! Scholar Bediuzzaman Said Nursi explains this fact in Risale-i Nur:

" Because, just as in relation to water, air, and light, earth is dense and dark, but since it is the source and means of all the varieties of Divine artefacts, in meaning it rises above the other elements; and just as in regard to the mystery of its comprehensiveness and on condition it is purified, the human soul, which is also dense, rises above all the other human subtle faculties; so too corporeality is the richest and most comprehensive and all-embracing mirror to the manifestation of the Divine Names. All the tools and instruments for measuring the contents of the treasuries of mercy and reckoning their balances lie in corporeality. For example, if the sense of taste in the tongue was not the source of scales to the number of the sorts of foods and their pleasures, it could not experience them all and recognize them, and taste and weigh them up. Also, the instruments for experiencing and knowing the manifestations of most of the Divine Names, and tasting and recognizing them, again lie in corporeality. And the faculties for experiencing all the infinitely various pleasures are also in corporeality.
As is proved in the Eleventh Word, it is understood clearly from the disposition of the universe and man’s comprehensiveness that the universe’s Maker wants to make known all the treasuries of His mercy, and all the manifestations of His Names, and to make experienced all the varieties of His bounties. The abode of bliss, therefore, which is a vast pool formed from the flood of the universe and a great exhibition of the textiles woven on the loom of the universe and an everlasting store of the crops produced in the arable field of this world, will resemble the universe to a degree. And it will preserve all its fundamental matters, both corporeal and spiritual. Its All-Wise Maker, the Most Compassionate One, will also give as recompense for the duties of the physical tools and instruments, pleasures worthy of them; and to His servants, as a wage and reward for the particular worship of each. Otherwise a situation would occur that was contrary to His wisdom, justice, and mercy, which is in no way fitting for the beauty of His mercy and perfection of His justice, and in no way compatible with them."

Don't worry when you see them you'll be staring at one for 40 years. Then you'll stare at another... for 40 years, so on and so forth.

what's the problem with physical pleasure ?

If it's a will of Almighty Allah , we must not challenge or dislike it.

The son of Adam is both a physical as well as a spiritual being. In Jannah, may Allah grant us all entrance into it, all aspects of the human will be satisfied, the same way that in Nar, may Allah save us all from it, all aspects of the human will be punished. certainly spiritual pleasure will be greater than the physical, since the greatest pleasure the citizens of Jannah will feel is seeing their Lord, the Most High. Likewise in Nar, its inhabitant's greatest pain could be the pains of regret rather than the physical pain, even though it is nothing light.

That might certainly be the case bro, the pleasures arrived from the physical when followed by Alhamdulillah will certainly enhance both. Allah(swt) knows best.

I also wonder why there would be a need for eating in Jannah or Heaven. Were there no pain, there would be no hunger, there would be no purpose for eating. However, if it were that we wouldn't forget our lives here on Earth, we would remember the pleasures of foods, etc. and it could be like, a token to the life we survived.

Also, a new question just popped into my head: Would any food in Jannah be vegan?

Food will not be eaten in Paradise because of need but ONLY for pure pleasure as we can have anything we want in Paradise as an eternal reward for those who abstained from the false and deceptive desires of this world for the pleasure of God. For this world is a prison for the believer and death is the release and Paradise is freedom.

I'm pretty sure you get fruit. :p

But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness that their portion is Gardens beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed with fruits therefrom they say: "Why this is what we were fed with before" for they are given things in similitude; and they have therein companions (pure and holy); and they abide therein (for ever). (2:25)

There are other verses that mention fruits as well as other things.

The Food and Drink of Jannah

“Such will be the Garden which you have inherited because of what you used to do. You shall have therein abundance of fruit from which you shall eat.” [Zukhruf, 43: 72-73]

“And We shall provide them with fruit and meat, anything they shall desire. They shall exchange with one another a cup free of frivolity, free of sin.” [Tur, 52: 22-23]

“As for the righteous, (they will be) in a position of security among gardens and springs, dressed in fine silk and in rich brocade, facing each other. And We shall join them to companions with beautiful, big, lustrous eyes. There they can call for every kind of fruit, in peace and security.”
[Dukhan, 44: 51-55]

“Every fruit (enjoyment) will be there for them, and they shall have whatever they call for.” [Ya-Sin, 36: 57]

“As for him who will be given his record in his right hand, he will say, ‘Ah here! Read my record! I certainly knew that I would be meeting my account!’ so he will be in a life of bliss, in a garden on high, the fruits hanging in bunches (low and near). ‘Eat and drink with full satisfaction because of the good that you sent before you in the days past!” [Haqqah, 69: 19-24]

“And among them will be circulated vessels of silver and glasses of crystal, - crystal- clear, made of silver which they will determine the measure thereof (according to their wishes). They will be given a cup in which a mixture of Zanjabeet (ginger) from a fountain called Salsabeel. Around them, youths of perpetual (freshness) will serve. If you see them, you will think they are scattered pearls. When you look there (Jannah), you will see bliss and a magnificent realm. Upon them (people of Jannah) will be green garments of fine silk and heavy brocade. They will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a pure drink. ‘Verily this is a reward for you and your endeavor has been appreciated.” [Insan, 76: 15-22]

“The companions of the right hand – what are the companions of the right hand? (They shall be) among lot trees without thorns, among talh (bananas) trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another, and in shade long – extended, by water flowing (constantly) and fruit in abundance whose season is not limited nor (supply) forbidden. And (they will be) on thrones (of dignity) raised high.” [Waqi'ah, 56: 27-34]

“As for the righteous, they shall be amid (cool) shades and springs (of water) and fruits, all they desire. ‘Eat and drink to your heart’s content because of what you used to do.’ Thus do We certainly reward the doers of good.” [Mursalat, 77: 41-44]

“As for the righteous they shall drink from a scup in which is a mixture of kaafoor.” [Insaan, 76: 5]

“Therein will they recline (at ease). Therein they can call (at pleasure) for fruit in abundance and (delicious) drink.”
[Saad, 38: 51]

“As for the righteous, they will be gardens and feel happiness, enjoying what their Lord has given them. And their Lord had (already) prevented them from the penalty of the Fire. (to them it will be said), ‘Eat and drink with satisfaction because of what you used to do.” [Tur, 52: 17-19]

Abu Sa'eed [ra] narrated that the Prophet [saw] said: “The first meal which the people of Jannah will take will be the caudate (extra) lobe of the liver of a fish.” [Sahih al-Bukhari]

people are strange. if there weren't any physical pleasures in heaven, then someone would say "why aren't there any physical pleasures? how can you expect us to give up pleasures in this world when we can't get any in the next? bla bla bla." but when Allah says that we will get physical pleasureas and all that the heart desires then someone comes up and says why are there physical pleasures. aren't spiritual enough. etc etc.

^ exactly!

and anyway, in the Qur'an verses, paradise (jannah) will be even beyond our imagination. All we know is that all the bad things that exist in this world, physical or not, will not exist in paradise, and all pleasures will be free from bad consequences and we can get everything our heart so desires (however, bad desires will not exist as nothing bad/negative will exist in paradise)

here i remember one hadith... i heard that there will a person who will be in lower basement in jahanim and he will ask to allah swt, oh allah i will never ask u anything more but plz let me come to above part of jahanum. allah swt says ok but u will not ask for anymore after this. he will agree and allah swt will move him to the up level. but then again he will say the same and says i will never ask anything more but i would be move to next upper part. similarly he keeps on saying this and came to top of jahanum. then he says oh allah plz move me to jannah and i will never ask anything more after that. allah swt move him to janah and THEN ALLAH SWT says oh son of adam this is Janat , my guest house, so ask for what u want, that man will reply oh allah i dont need anything more and i had got everything.
so its true in dunia we never be happy and always ask for more and more, mean this dunia is so small that its can fulfil the desires of ONLY ONE PERSON, but in jannah we will be given so much that when allah swt asked what else do u need and they have no answer. so they go to ulama and asked allah swt is saying this but we dont there is anything more we need, we had got all. then ulama told them ask from allah swt that he will be happy with us bcz its great nihma of allah swt as allah swt says in quran, wa rizwanum min allah e akbar.

In Jannat, the residents therin will do Dhikr of Allah exessivley and it will be as easy as it is to breathe in this life.
There are so many spiritual aspects to Jannat, i.e. never ever fearing, security, absolute comfort, food beyond your wildest imaginings, wives, true love between those who are lucky enough to bring their partner to Jannat, the meeting of the Holy Prophet Sallahu Alayhi Wasalam before we even enter, the seeing of Angels, etc. etc.

The LOWEST, most smallest Jannat is big enough to house all the Children of Adam Alayhi Salam- just imagine the size of this Subhanallah.

There will be trees, whose shade will take an Arabian horse FIVE hundred years to cross and it shall still keep going to try to cross just its shade. Allahu Akbar.

You must understand that Allah Ta'ala is our Creator, and He is the Creator of each and everything in which we enjoy. Do you think that Allah Ta'ala does not know what we desire deep within ourselves? Allah Ta'ala knows and loves each and every believer 70 times more than the Mother and child- and you think He doesn't know what pleases His Creation? Allah Ta'ala decreed that we shall have Physical and Spiritual Pleasure in the Akhirat and He is the Deviser of All Things.

-peace.

Well, why not have both? I don't think they'd deduct from each other.
