Yes, it is a sin if you don't pay the minimum rate of Zakah of your wealth.

Yes it is a sin. None of that wealth will come with us when we die.

Islam is not against wealth, if it is procured through halal way and if some spent on zakat and shodaqoh (alms). Uthman ibn Affan, one of the prophet Muhammad SAW closest and most beloved shahaba was a very shrewd and successful businessman and trader and was among the richest persons but he was very fair in giving wages and spent so much and most of his wealth for those who qualified to receive monetary assistance.
However, hoarding of wealth is big sin

Allah says:
“And let those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend them in the way of Allah know that a severe and painful punishment is awaiting them.” [At-Tauba: 34]

At-Tabari extracted in his commentary on the authority of Abu Umama Al-Bahili who said: “A man from the people of the Suffa (poor) died and a dinar was later found in his garment, upon this the Messenger of Allah said: ‘That is a branding (burn).” Then another man died and two dinars were found in his garment, and upon this the Messenger of Allah said: ‘That is two brands.’” This was because the two men were living off the Sadaqah while they had gold. One Dinar or two do not reach the Nisab in order to say that Zakat is taken out of them. So when the Messenger of Allah said about them “a branding and two brandings”, he was referring to them as hoarding, even though the amount is not liable for Zakat. He was referring to the verse of the hoarding where Allah says:
“On the day their wealth will be heated in hell fire, and with which their foreheads, flanks and backs will be branded” [At-Tauba: 35]

And let not those who hoard up that which Allah hath bestowed upon them of His bounty think that it is better for them. Nay, it is worse for them. That which they hoard will be their collar on the Day of Resurrection…………-(Al-Imran 3:180)

“That which ye give in usury in order that it may increase on (other) people’s property hath no increase with Allah; but that which ye give in charity, seeking Allah’s countenance, hath increase manifold” (30 : 39)

“O ye who believe ! Observe your duty to Allah, and give up what remaineth (due to you) from usury, if ye are (in truth) believers. And if ye do not, then be warned of war (against you) from Allah and His messenger. And if ye repent then ye have your principal (without interest). Wrong not and ye shall not be wronged. -(2 : 278-279)

“O ye who believe ! Forbid not the good things which Allah hath made lawful for you, and transgress not, Lo! Allah loveth not the transgressors. Eat of that which Allah hath bestowed on you as food lawful and good and keep your duty to Allah in Whom ye are believers.” (5 : 87-88)

“O children of Adam ! Look to your adornment at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but be not prodigal Lo! He (Allah) loveth not the prodigals.”(7:31)

“And those who, when they spend, are neither prodigal nor grudging; and there is ever a firm station between the two.”(25:67)

Ayesha reported that the Messenger of Allah said: This world is an abode for one who has got no abode, and a property for one who has got no property, and one who has got no wisdom hoards for it. (Ahmad, Baihaqi)

Injunctions to spend wealth to help people:

“Establish worship, pay Zakat and bow your heads with those who bow (in worship)”- (2 : 43).
The Holy Book again says “Ye will not attain unto piety until ye spend of that which ye love. And whatsoever ye spend, Allah is aware thereof.”(3:92). It further pronounces: “And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged, for the beggar and the destitute” (70 : 24-25).

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels and the Scripture and the Prophets; and giveth his wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth Zakat” (2 : 177).
Again the Holy Book enjoins upon its followers: “They ask thee, (O Muhammad), what they shall spend. Say : That which ye spend for good (must go) to parents and near kindred and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer. And whatsoever good ye do, Lo! Allah is aware of it” (2:215).

“And likeness of those who spend their wealth, seeking to please Allah and to strengthen their souls, is as a garden, high and fertile………” (2 : 265)

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: Moderation in expenditure is half of livelihood, and love for people is half of wisdom, and good questioning is half of learning -(Bukhari)

(3:180) Those who are niggardly about what Allah has granted them out of His bounty think that niggardli ness is good for them; it is bad for them. What they were niggardly about will turn into a halter round their necks on the Day of Resur-rection. To Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth; *127 and Allah is well aware of what you do.
*127. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to God alone. Hence the possession and use of anything by man is purely transient. For everyone will be dispossessed of his temporary belongings, and everything will ultimately return to and abide with God. If anyone therefore spends openheartedly in the way of God out of his temporary possessions he does so from property which, ultimately, belongs to God alone. Anyone who hoards his possessions and fails to spend them in the way of God is indeed stupid.
