One of my workmate is getting married and he said that he is going to give mahr
my question :
Does the bride ask for mahr or the groom can give any mahr that he wishes ? Long time back I read fatwas that the bride should ask for mahr its brides right and whteva she asks the groom should give tht in order to marry ryt ? or am I wrong ?
pls provide students of knowledge or scholarly views on this topic I have to give him an answer in less than 4 hrs !!! :heated:

Mahr is women's right, the bride can asks anything that she wants. But if the groom is planing to giving in small amount and the bride has no objection, what is your problem ?
Many rich men in my place gave mahr only in small amount, and their brides didn't have objection on it. But, after they married, those wives start to ask more money, expensive clothes, new cars, jeweleries, etc. :D

Lol too ! I said "the bride can ask anything that she wants" not "the bride can get anything that she wants". It's like biding in trading, and what is the decision is depend on the agreement between the bride and the groom.
Mahr is the bride's right. But if the groom can't afford to pay cash, he can pay later.

The mahr when I married my wife were Qur'an, sajada, mukena (salat cloth for woman) and money. I don't remember the amount, but that was very small.
This is Indonesian custom. In my place, mahar in high amount is uncommon, and the main mahr usually Qur'an, sajada, and mukena. But like I said before, after married the wives can ask something to the husbands.

in Indonesia, women normally pray in what we call "mukena", a simple two-piece white clothe, which cover everything except face and palms, and muslimah would normally carry one of these in their bags, or masjids and mushalla normally keep them so women who do not bring their own can just borrow. Here's a picture of mukena:
