May 03, 2011 – WikiLeaks creator, Julian Assange, has accused the website Facebook of being a tool for the US government to spy on its people. He claims that all posts made on the site will help US intelligence in spying on Americans. This revelation came when he was interviewed on Russia Today. He called the site the most appalling spying machine ever created.

He points to several sites as being part of a network of spy tools, where complex databases house information on its citizens from names and addresses to relationships and how they socialize with each other and all those close to them. All located in the US, these sites are readily accessible to the US intelligence agencies monitoring them.
He included, along with Facebook, the search engine giants Google and Yahoo, and several other US companies that operate online with user interfaces that have been developed to be used particularly by US intelligence organizations.

Assange pointed out that the need for a subpoena is a moot point when the information needed could be cultivated from sites like Facebook. He denies the claim that Facebook is run by US intelligence agencies, but states that US Intelligence has the ability to quickly apply a little bit of political and/or legal pressure on these companies to yield information that they may need. To anticipate this possibility, all of these sites have created processes that give up to these intelligence agencies any record they request, quickly and without difficulty.

Assange points out that every time a friend is connected on Facebook, US intelligence agencies are the recipient of free work, as US citizens build a huge database on their behalf.

Assange is not revealing any news that has not been heard before. Recent news has plagued companies like Apple and Google, and the gadgets used by their consumers. Steve Jobs of Apple Inc. states that the iPhone does not follow the behaviors and information of its customers, but does gather traffic data anonymously so that they can reach their goal of a crowd-sourced database of traffic that would let iPhone owners experience better traffic strategies within the next couple of years. Google has to handle a $50 million litigation started by two women in Michigan because of Android being able to track their locations.
