5 Things to Do Before Sleeping

1. Preperations before going to bed

1. Recite: Bismillah بِسْمِ اللَّهِ (In the name of Allah) before closing the doors of the house, before covering utensils with food in them, switch off or turn off fires, light etc (Bukhari)

If one cannot find anything with which to cover the utensil then one should place a stick across the top of the utensil. (Muslim- Vol.2, pg.170)

2. Before climbing into bed, dust the bed thrice with the corner of your clothes. (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)

3. To make Miswaak before retiring to bed even if one has already made it for Isha salaat.(Kitabut Tahaarah and Sunnats)

4. To sleep in a state of Wudhu, (Attargheeb, Abu Dawood)

5. To sleep on the right facing the Qibla with the right hand underneath the head like a pillow and with the knees slightly bent (Like in the recovery position). (Bukhari)

2. Surah's to Recite Before Going to Sleep

1. Surah Waaqi’a should be read before sleeping as it saves one from hunger and poverty (Attargheeb)

2. Recite Surah Mulk before sleeping for protection from grave punishment:

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, ‘Surah al Mulk is the protector from the torment of the grave ‘ (Sahihul Jamiea 1/680, Hakim 2/498 & Nasai)

Jabir said it was the custom of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) not to go to sleep until he had read Tabarakalladhi Biyadihil Mulk and Alif Laam Meem Tanzeel. (Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Darami)

3. Dua's to Recite before Falling Asleep

1. When one goes to bed then do the following: ‘When retiring to his bed every night, the Prophet would hold his palms together, spit (A form of spitting comprising mainly of air with little spittle) in them, recite the last three chapters (Al-Ikhlaas, Al-Falaq, An-Naas) of the Quran and then wipe over his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with his head and face and then all parts of the body, he would do this 3 times.’ (Tirmidhi)

Whoever reads the following when he lies down to sleep will have a guardian from Allah remain with him and Satan will not be able to come near him until he rises in the morning:

Allaahu laa 'ilaaha 'illaa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoom, laa ta'khuthuhu sinatun wa laa nawm, lahu maa fis-samaawaati wa maa fil-'ardh, man thal-lathee yashfa'u 'indahu 'illaa bi'ithnihi, ya'lamu maa bayna 'aydeehim wa maa khalfahum, wa laa yuheetoona bishay'im-min 'ilmihi 'illaa bimaa shaa'a, wasi'a kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal'ardha, wa laa ya'ooduhu hifdhuhumaa, wa Huwal- 'Aliyyul- 'Adheem.

Allah! There is no God but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never encompass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. (Al-Bukhari)

2. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:‘Whoever reads this when he lies down to sleep will have a guardian from Allah remain with him and Satan will not be able to come near him until he rises in the morning:

'Aamanar-Rasoolu bimaa 'unzila mir-Rabbihi walmu'minoon, kullun 'aamana billaahi wa malaa'ikatihi wa Kutubihi wa Rusulihi, laa nufarriqu bayna 'ahadim-mir-Rusulihi, wa qaaloo sami'naa wa 'ata'naa ghufraanaka Rabbanaa wa 'ilaykal-maseer. Laa yukallifullaahu nafsan 'illaa wus'ahaa, lahaa maa kasabat wa 'alayhaa mak-tasabat, Rabbanaa laa tu'aakhithnaa 'in naseenaa 'aw 'akhta'naa, Rabbanaa wa laa tahmil 'alaynaa 'isran kamaa hamaltahu 'alal-latheena min qablinaa, Rabbanaa wa laa tuhammilnaa maa laa taaqata lanaa bihi, wa'fu 'annaa, waghfir lanaa warhamnaa, 'Anta Mawlaanaa fansurnaa 'alal-qawmil-kaafireen.

The Messenger believes in what has been send down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say: "We make no distinction between any of His Messengers," and they say: "We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return." Allah burdens not a person beyond what he can bear. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us. Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Protector, and help us against the disbelieving people. (Muslim 1/554)

3. Also reciting the last ten verses in Surah Baqarah at night is said to ward away Shaythaan and calamities, illnesses, worries from ones home so ones whole family is protected that night.

These 10 verses are: The first four ayah’s of Surah Baqarah; Ayat ul Kursi and the two verses following it and the last three verses of the Surah.

4. If one of you rises from his bed and then returns to it he should dust it with the edge of his garment three times for he does not know what has occurred in his absence and when he lies down he should supplicate:

بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّي وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، فَإِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا، بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ".

Bismika Rabbee wadha'tu janbee, wa bika 'arfa'uhu, fa'in 'amsakta nafsee farhamhaa, wa 'in 'arsaltahaa fahfadhhaa, bimaa tahfadhu bihi 'ibaadakas-saaliheen.

‘In Your name my Lord, I lie down and in Your name I rise, so if You should take my soul then have mercy upon it, and if You should return my soul then protect it in the manner You do so with Your righteous servants.’ (Al-Bukhari 1 1/ 126 and Muslim 4/2084)

5. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would place his right hand under his cheek when about to sleep and supplicate:

"اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ".

Allaahumma qinee 'athaabaka yawma tab'athu 'ibaadaka. (Three times).

‘O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day Your servants are resurrected.’ (Abu Dawud 4/311)

6. Also read this dua:

"بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا".

Bismikal-lahumma amootu wa-ahya.

‘In Your name O Allah, I live and die.’ (Muslim 4/ 2083)

7. At the time of difficulty when sleeping: Zaid bin Thaabit (RA)complained to Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)of not being able to go to sleep at times and headvised him to recite the following dua:

اللَّهُمَّ غَارَتِ النُّجُومُ وَهَدَأَتِ الْعُيُونُ وَأَنْتَ حَيٌّ قَيُّومٌ * لَا تَأْخُذُكَ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ أَهْدِئْ لَيْلِي وَأَنِمْ عَيْنِي

Allahummah ghaarithinnujumu wa hadaathil uyoonu wa antha hayyun qayyumulla tha’ khudhu ka sinathuwalaa nawmun yaa hayyun yaa qayyoomu a’hde’ laylee wa anim ‘aynee

Oh Allah the stars have sunk in and the eyes have become tranquil and quite and You are alive and ever lasting neither does sleep overcome You. Oh the living and ever lasting one make my night my tranquil and give my eyes sleep. (Ibn Sunni, Hisnul Hasin)

8. If afraid to go to sleep or feeling lonely or depressed then recite:

"أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ، وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ، وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ".

'A'oothu bikalimaatil-laahit-taammaati min ghadhabihi wa 'iqaabihi, wa sharri 'ibaadihi, wa min hamazaatish-shayaateeni wa 'an yahdhuroon.

I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, from the evil of His slaves and from the taunts of devils and from their presence. (Abu Dawud 4/12, At- Tirmithi 3/171)

9. This is to be recited if you turn over in bed during the night:

"لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ الْوَاحِدُ اْقَهَّارُ، رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفَّارُ".

Laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahul-Waahidul-Qahhaaru, Rabbus-samaawaati wal'ardhi wa maa baynahumal-'Azeezul-Ghaffaaru.

There is none worthy of worship but Allah, the One, the Victorious, Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the All-Mighty, the All-Forgiving. (See An-Nasa'i, 'Amalul-Yawm wal-Laylah, and Ibn As-Sunni)

10. If after sleeping one experience a pleasant dream then when ones eyes open then say: “Alhamdulillah” – All Praise be to Allah, then the pleasant dream should only be revealed to trustworthy learned ones so that the dream can be interpreted correctly.

If one experiences an unpleasant dream then one should spittle (A form of spitting comprising mainly of air with little spit) three times on the left side and then recite three times:

“Audhobillaahi Minashaythaanirajeem”.

I seek refuge with Allah from the evil of shaythan

Also change one’s position to the other side and sleep. (Muslim-Vol.2, chapter of dreams)

The dream should NOT be revealed to anyone then it will bring no harm to the person (Bukhari, Muslim)

4. Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr) Before Falling Asleep

The remembrance of Allah just when one is about to sleep shall be a means of that person achieving high stages in Jannah. (Attargheeb)

1. Asthaghfaar three times:

Asthaghfirullah halladhee laa ilaaha ilallahuwal hayyul qayyumu wa athubu ilay

I seek forgiveness from Allah besides whom there is none worthy of worship, the living, the sustainer of life and to Him i repent. (Tirmidhi-Vol.2, pg.177)

‘2. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wasallam)said to Ali and Fatimah- (May Allah be pleased with them) after they approached him for a servant: "Shall I not direct you both to something better than a servant"?

When you go to bed say:

Subhaanallah. (Thirty-three times)
Alhamdulillah. (Thirty-three times)
Allaahu Akbar. (Thirty-four times)

…for that is indeed better for you both than a servant.’ (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi)

3. Also read Kalimah Tayyaba afterwards:

Before you go to bed perform Wudu as you would for prayer, then lie down on your right side and recite:

Allahumma aslamtu nafsee ilayk, wafawwadtu amree ilayk, wawajjahtu wajhee ilayk, wa-alja/tu thahree ilayk, raghbatan warahbatan ilayk, la maljaa wala manja minka illa ilayk, amantu bikitabikal-lathee anzalt, wabinabiyyikal-lathee arsalt.

‘O Allah, I submit my soul unto You, and I entrust my affair unto You, and I turn my face towards You, and I totally rely on You, in hope and fear of You. Verily there is neither refuge nor safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.’

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Whoever says this and dies in his sleep has died in a state of the natural monotheism (Fitrah)." (Al-Bukhari, Muslim 4/2081)

4. ….When you go to bed, glorify Him and praise Him and magnify Allah one hundred times: that will be one hundred on the tongue and a thousand in the scales. Who among you does 2500 sayi’aat (bad deeds) in one day?’ They said:‘How could we not count (our sins)?’ He said: ‘The Shaytaan comes to any one of you whilst he is praying and says, Remember this, remember that, until he finishes his prayer and does not do (this Dhikr), or he comes to him when he is lying down and makes him sleepy, until he falls asleep (without doing this Dhikr).’” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 3332)

5. Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)has stated that whosoever goes to bed in a state of purity (i.e. Wudhu) and such a person remembers Almighty Allah until he falls asleep then, whatever dua such a person makes (whether pertaining to this world or the next) while asleep and turning side to side, such dua’s shall certainly be granted to him by Almighty Allah. (Mishkaat)

5. Having Intention to Pray Tahajjud

1. To sleep with the intention of getting up for Tahajjud (Nisaa’i)

2. To pray Tahajjud before Subho Sadiq (Dawn) (Mishkaat)

3. Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) read long rak’ahs which caused swelling of his blessed feet. Whilst reciting Qur’an in Salaah Rasulallah used to cry excessively and this caused a wheezing sound coming from his blessed chest as if a pot was being boiled. This is due to the fear Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)had of Almighty Allah.

4. It is recommended to start the night vigil with two short rakats, because of the hadith of Abu Hurraira (RA) that the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)said, “It you get up for night prayer, start with two short rakats.” [Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Dawud]

5. Abu Hurraira (RA)reports that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was asked, “What prayer is most virtuous, after the obligatory prayers?” He said, “Prayer in the depths of the night.” (Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nisaa’i, Ibn Majah)

Note: For Tahajjud one should read at least 2 Rak’ahs upto 12 rak’ahs. This is Sunnah. However there is no limit for (Nafil) voluntary worship. One may also do a lot of Dhikrullah as well as recitation of the Qur’an.

The dua's at the time of Tahajjud are very readily accepted by Almighty Allah and one should cry and repent to Allah during this time. If one cannot cry due to the hardness of ones heart due major sins then one should at least make a face as if one is crying.

Just as a mother tends to her baby quickly and promptly when it cries then in the same way Allah tends to his servant quicker when his servant is crying and sincere.

We should try and pray Tahajjud every night as it is one of the best and most rewarding Nafil prayers one can possible pray and makes it possible for a person to gain the top ranks of Jannah (Heaven). If we can’t pray everyday then we should at least pray as much as we can.

Ibn Mas’ud (RA) was asked, ‘I cannot pray at night.’ He said, ‘Your sins have prevented you.’

If one is overcome by sleep then it is best to sleep but one should always ensure that one does not miss Fajr. Men should do their best to attend Fajr with Jamaat as this is huge reward and women get the same reward for praying at home.

May Allah Give us the ability to act upon these Sunnah's. Ameen

I think it will be more beneficial if you share one tip/duaa at a time.

Secondly, can you please provide the authentication of the hadith. Which Muhadith -- scholar of hadith -- authenticated them. For example, I quickly looked at the thread, and the hadith about reciting Surah Waqiya is weak.

JKhair.

Asalaamu Alaikum, Jazakallhu khayr for your feedback regarding splitting up the article. With regards to the hadith in question then Ibn Kathir cites a story on the authority of Ibn 'Asakir from Abu Zabyah that when Sayyidna 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud (RA) was lying on his deathbed, Sayyidna 'Uthman (RA) paid him a visit and the following conversation ensued.

'Uthman (RA): "What are you suffering from?"
Ibn Masud (RA): "from my sins.''
'Uthman (RA): "Do you desire anything?"
Ibn Masud (RA): Yes, Allah's mercy."
'Uthman (RA): “Shall I call a doctor for you?"
Ibn Masud (RA): "It is the doctor who has given me the ailment."
'Uthman (RA): "May I send you an allowance from the public treasury?"
Ibn Masud (RA): “I have no need for it."
'Uthman (RA): "Accept it, [please]. You are leaving daughters behind you. It will help them."
Ibn Masud (RA): "You are worried about my daughters that they must not suffer from poverty. I have no such worry, because I have instructed them to recite Surah Al-Waqi'ah every night. I have heard the Messenger of Allah SAW say 'Whoever recites surah Al-Waqi'ah every night will never suffer from poverty'."

Ibn Kathir, after citing this story from Ibn 'Asakir, has supported it with other chains of transmitters and other sources.

Asalaamu Alaikum, What time do you usually have your last meal? and do you drink any caffiene drinks? Do you exercise? It maybe that at night when you are relaxed in bed your mind is active thinking of various things going on in your life. If this is the case then you really need to wind down when you are in bed. There are a lot of techniques you can do to wind down and relax your body and mind and eventually fall asleep. There are many things you can try. I will wait for your reply.

I don't have a set time for my last meal but usually it's 2 hours before bed, but I think it's not enough because as I'm lying in bed I get the urge to burp so I have to sit up because I can't burp lying down. I've stopped all caffeine drinks after 5pm now, but I do have them before 5, that's exactly the problem my mind is all ways active and won't stop thinking, I don't know how to wind it down and make it relax. And as the hours of the night go past I start to panic because I know I need to get up in a few hours.

I've tried doing dhikr to relax myself but my mind drifts onto something else without even realizing then a few minutes later I remember I was supposed to be doing dhikr.

Dua when the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) lay on his right side:

Al-Bara' bin 'Azib (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

Whenever Messenger of Allah(Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) went to bed, he would lie down on his right side and recite: "Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilaika, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilaika, wa fawwadtu amri ilaika, wa 'alja'tu zahri ilaika, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika, la malja'a wa la manja illa ilaika. Amantu bikitabikal-ladhi anzalta, wa nabiyyikal-ladhi arsalta [O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, I have turned my face to You, committed my affairs to You, and depend on You for protection out of desire for You and out of fear of You (expecting Your reward and fearing Your punishment). There is no refuge and no place of safety from You but with You. I believed in the Book You have revealed, and in the Prophet You have sent (i.e., Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)).]"[Al-Bukhari].

Astagfirullah. I remember doing this all in years gone by. I used to pray all the surahs and duas and did most of what is pointed out in the first few posts.

Unfortunately as I have gotten older, I have become a really light sleeper and with the beasts who live next door (hammering at night / hoovering bedrooms at night / slamming bedroom doors full whack at night / you name it, they do it), I have unfortunately resorted to watching stupid movies / documentaries / reality tv until 1am in the morning when the beasts eventually quieten down and I can sleep. By that time, I am so tired I just nod off and forget to read all the surahs and duas. That's until the female beast wakes up and starts slamming doors again at 5am when she goes to work!

I wish I could go back to praying all the surahs and duas again, but the door slamming etc really throws me off what I am praying. Please make dua that the beasts get hidayat and stop tormenting us to I can run back full force to my Iman.

Just wanted to say a huge thanks to Hamza for yet another fabulous thread. You really are the best.

Du’a before Sleeping (List of Sound Hadiths)

Dhikr before sleeping

There are so many sound du‘as for sleeping that were narrated in the Prophet’s Sunnah that Imam an-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“You should understand that the hadiths and reports concerning this matter are many; what we have mentioned is sufficient for the one who is enabled to act upon them. We refrain from quoting more for fear of tiring the student. Moreover, it is better for a person to do all that is mentioned concerning that, but if that is not possible, he should stick to what he is able to do of the most important thereof.” (Al-Adhkar, p.95)

Hadiths about Du`a before sleeping

We will list here the sahih hadiths concerning this matter:

Blowing into the cupped palms
1– Blowing into the cupped palms and reciting the three mu‘awwidhat [surahs seeking refuge with Allah, the last three surahs of the Quran]:

It was narrated from ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) went to his bed every night, he would put his cupped hands together, then blow into them, then recite into them Qul Huwa Allahu ahad, Qul a'udhu bi Rabb il-Falaq and Qul a'udhu bi Rabb il-Nas [i.e., the last three surahs of the Quran), then he would wipe his hands over as much of his body as he could, starting with his head and face, and the front part of his body. He would do that three times.

The word translated here as blow refers to spitting lightly and drily. Narrated by al-Bukhari (5017).

Reciting Ayat al-Kursiy
2- Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) put me in charge of guarding the collected zakah of Ramadan. Someone came and started to rummage in the food. I took hold of him and said, I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).… He [the one who came and rummaged in the food] said, When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursiy and you will be protected by Allah, and no devil will come near you until morning. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “He told you the truth even though he is a liar. That was a devil.” Narrated by al-Bukhari (2311).

Reciting the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah
3– Abu Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:

“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah every night, they will suffice him.” Narrated by al-Bukhari (5009) and Muslim (808).

The scholars differed as to what is meant by “they will suffice him.” It was said that it means they will protect him from harm during the night; or they will take the place of praying qiyam on that night. It may be that both are meant. And Allah knows best.

Reciting Surah al-Kafirun
4– Nawfal al-Ashja‘i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said to me: “Recite ‘Say: O disbelievers’ [al-Kafirun 109], then go to sleep at the end of it, for it is a disavowal of shirk.” Narrated by Abu Dawud (5055); classed as hasan by Ibn Hajar in Nataij al-Afkar (3/61).

Reciting Surah al-Isra
5– ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would not sleep before he recited Bani Israil [al-Isra] and az-Zumar. Narrated by at-Tirmidhi (3402); he said: a hasan hadith. It was classed as hasan by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in Nataij al-Afkar (3/65).

Reciting Surah az-Zumar
6– The evidence for this is the hadith quoted above.

Saying ‘Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya’
7– Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

When the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) wanted to sleep , he would say, “Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya (In your name, O Allah, I die and I live)”, and when he woke up he would say “Al-hamdu Lillah alladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhi al-nushur (Praise be to Allah who has brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection).” Narrated by al-Bukhari (6324).

Saying ‘Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilayk…’
8– Al-Bara ibn ‘Azib said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When you go to bed, do wudu as if for prayer, then lie down on your right side, then say: ‘Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilayk, wa fawwadtu amri ilayk, wa aljatu zahri ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, la malja wa la manja minka illa ilayk. Amantu bi kitabik alladhi anzalt, wa bi nabiyyik alladhi arsalt (O Allah, I submit myself to You, I turn my face to You, I delegate my affairs to You and I rely totally on You, out of fear and hope of You. There is no refuge or sanctuary from You except in You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent).’ Then if you die, you will have died on the fitrah, (natural state), so make these the last words you speak.” I repeated [these words] to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and when I reached the words “Amantu bi kitabik alladhi anzalt (I believe in Your Book which You have revealed)”, I said, “wa bi rasulika (and in Your Messenger).” He said: “No; ‘wa bi nabiyyika (and in Your Prophet)’.” Narrated by al-Bukhari (6311) and Muslim (2710).

Saying ‘Bismika Rabbi wada’tu janbi…’
9– Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:

“When one of you goes to his bed, let him dust off his bed with the inside of his lower garment, for he does not know what came onto it after he left it. Then let him say: Bismika Rabbi wada’tu janbi wa bika arfa’uhu wa in amsakta nafsi farhamha wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tuhfaz bihi ‘ibadika al-saalihin (In Your name, my Lord, I lie down, and in Your name I rise. If You should take my soul then have mercy on it, and if You should return my soul then protect it as You protect Your righteous slaves).””. Narrated by al-Bukhari (6320) and Muslim (2714).

Saying Subhan Allah, al-hamdulillah, Allahu akbar
10– It was narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib that Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) went to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and asked him for a servant. He said:

“Shall I not tell you of something that is better for you than that? When you go to sleep, glorify Allah (by saying Subhan Allah) thirty-three times, praise Allah (by saying Al-hamdu Lillah) thirty-three times, and magnify Him (by saying Allahu akbar) thirty-four times.” And I have never abandoned [that practice] since then. It was said: Not even on the night of Siffin? He said: Not even on the night of Siffin. Narrated by al-Bukhari (5362) and Muslim (2727).

Saying ‘Allahumma qini ‘adhabaka yawma tab’ath ‘ibadaka’
11– It was narrated from Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) wanted to sleep, he would put his right hand under his right cheek, then he would say: “Allahumma qini ‘adhabaka yawma tab’ath ‘ibadaka (O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your slaves)” three times. Narrated by Abu Dawud (5045); classed as sahih by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari (11/119).

Saying ‘Al-hamdu Lillah alladhi at’amana wa saqana…’
12– Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) went to his bed, he said: “Al-hamdu Lillah alladhi at’amana wa saqana wa kafana wa awana fakam mimman la kafi lahu wa la muwi (Praise be to Allah, Who fed us and gave us to drink, and Who is sufficient for us and has sheltered us, for how many have none to suffice them or shelter them).” Narrated by Muslim (2715).

Saying ‘Allahumma khalaqta nafsi wa anta tawaffaha…’
13- ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar narrated that he instructed a man, when he went to his bed, to say:

“Allahumma khalaqta nafsi wa anta tawaffaha, laka mamatuha wa mahyaya. In ahyaytaha fahfazha wa in amattaha faghfir laha. Allahumma inni asaluka al-‘afiyah (O Allah, You have created my soul and it is for You to take it in death. Its death and its life are in Your hand. If You cause it to live then protect it and if You cause it to die then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You to keep me safe and sound).”

A man said to him: Did you hear that from ‘Umar? He said: From one who is better than ‘Umar, from the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Narrated by Muslim (2712).

Saying ‘Allahumma Rabb as-samawati wa Rabb al-ard…’
14– Suhayl said: Abu Salih used to tell us, if one of us wanted to sleep, to lie down on his right side and say:

“Allahumma Rabb as-samaaati wa Rabb al-ard wa Rabb al-‘arsh il-‘azim, Rabbana wa Rabba kulli shayin, Faliq al-habb wa’l-nawa wa munzil at-Tawrati wa’l-Injili wa’l-Furqan, a‘udhu bika min sharri kulli shayin anta akhidhun bi nasiyatihi. Allahumma anta al-awwalu fa laysa qablaka shayun, wa anta al-akhiru fa laysa ba’daka shayun, wa anta az-zahiru fa laysa fawqaka shayun wa anta al-batin fa laysa dunaka shayun. Iqdi ‘anna al-dayna wa aghnina min al-faqri (O Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the mighty Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Tawrat (Torah), the Injil (Gospel) and the Furqan (Quran), I seek refuge in You from the evil of every creature that You seize by the forelock [i.e., have full control over them]. O Allah, You are the First and there is nothing before You; You are the Last and there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest (al-Zahir) and there is nothing above You; You are the Hidden (al-Batin) and there is nothing beyond You. Settle our debt and spare us from poverty).” He narrated that from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Narrated by Muslim (2713).

Saying ‘Allahumma inni a‘udhu bi wajhika al-karimi…’
15– It was narrated from ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) that he used to say when going to his bed: “Allahumma inni a‘udhu bi wajhika al-karimi wa kalimatik at-tammati min sharri ma anta akhidhun bi nasiyatihi; Allahumma anta takshif al-maghram wa’l-matham; Allahumma la yuhzamu junduka wa la yukhlafu wa‘duka wa la yanfa‘u dha’l-jaddi minka al-jadd. Subhanaka wa bihamdika (O Allah, I seek refuge in Your noble countenance and Your perfect words from the evil of all things that You seize by the forelock [i.e., have full control over them]. O Allah, You remove debt and sin. O Allah, Your troops will not be defeated, Your promise will not be broken, nor can the richness of a rich man avail him anything before You, glory and praise be to You).” Narrated by Abu Dawud (5052); classed as sahih by an-Nawawi in al-Adhkar (p. 111) and by Ibn Hajar in Nataij al-Afkar (2/384).

Saying ‘Bismillahi wada‘tu janbi…’
16– It was narrated from Abu’l-Azhar al-Anmari that when the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) went to his bed at night, he said:

“Bismillahi wada‘tu janbi, Allahumma ighfir li dhanbi wa akhsi shaytani wa fukka rihani waj‘alni fi’n-nadi al-a‘la (In the name of Allah I lie down. O Allah, forgive me my sins, suppress my shaytan, ransom me and join me with the highest assembly [meaning the angels on high]). Narrated by Abu Dawud (5054); classed as hasan by an-Nawawi in al-Adhkar (p. 125) and by al-Haafiz in Nataij al-Afkar (3/60).
