Lessons from Quran | Fasting like those before

Filed under: Dhikrullah Reminder — Abu Muslim | July 28, 2011

Allaah says: “Oh you who believe, fasting has been prescribed on you as it was prescribed on those before you, so that you may become pious.” (surah Baqarah 2:183)

  • Allaah address the believers when he says “Oh you who believe”..
  • There are approximately 88 places in the Quraan where Allaah says “Oh you who believe”
  • When Allaah starts with “Ya ahuladheena aamanu” (Oh you who believe) – he is either giving a command, or the opposite; tell us to stay way from something
  • Fasting has been prescribed on us as it was prescribed on those before us with the primary aim of increasing us in taqwa
  • Umar (RA) said taqwa is avoiding thorns
  • Fasting is a shield for the Muslim – helps protects all limbs in the body. Narrated Abu Hurayrah: Allah’s Apostle (salAllaahu alayhi wa salam)) said, “Fasting is a shield (or a screen)” (Bukhari Book 31, Hadeeth no. 118)
  • Fasting, just like any other deed requires sincerity. If performed correctly, it will increase our emaan and taqwa of Allaah. Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Prophet (salAllaahu alayhi wa salam) said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)” (Bukhari book 31, hadeeth no 127)
  • Kaab Ibn Ujrah (RA) relates that Rasulullah (SAW) said Come near to the mimbar and we came near the mimbar. When He (SAW) climbed the first step of the mimbar, He (SAW) said “Aameen”, When He (SAW) ascended the second step, He (SAW) said “Aameen”, When He (SAW) climbed the third step, He (SAW) said “Aameen” When He (SAW) came down, We said “O Rasool of Allah (SAW), we have heard from you today something which we never heard before” He (SAW) said When I climbed the first step, the angel Jibraeel (A.S.) appeared before me and said “Destruction to him who found the blessed month of Ramdhan and let it pass by without gaining forgiveness” upon that I said ‘Aameen’. When I climbed the second step, he said, “Destruction to him before whom thy name is taken and then he does not make Dua for Allah’s blessing on me (by saying, for example SAW).” I replied ‘Aameen’. When I climbed the third step, he said”Destruction unto him in whose lifetime his parents or either one of them reaches old age, and (through failure to serve them) he is not allowed to enter Jannah”. I said ‘Aameen’.
