Lessons from Quraan and Hadeeth | Eat and Drink during Ramadaan

Filed under: Dhikrullah Reminder — Abu Muslim | August 18, 2011

Allaah (aza wajal) says: “..and eat and drink until the white thread of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (of night), then complete your fast till the nightfall” [al-Baqarah; Ayah 187]

‘Adi b. Hatim (Allah be pleased with him) reported that when (this verse) was revealed:” Until the white streak of the dawn becomes distinct from the dark streak” (ii. 187) Adi b. Hatim said: Messenger of Allah, verily I keep underneath my pillow two strings, one white and the other black, by which I distinguish night from dawn. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Your pillow seems to be very large. For the word khait implies the blackness of the night and the whiteness of the dawn.” [Saheeh Bukharee]

  • Before this ayah was revealed – if one was to sleep before iftar, he would not be allowed to eat all night. How merciful Allaah is to us that this ruling changed.
  • Then this ayah was revealed. The meaning of this Ayah, as stated by Al-Hafidh ibn Hajar, is, ”Until the light of the day appears distinct from the blackness of the night, and this occurs at the appearance of the truthful Fajr, since the white thread refers to daylight, while the black thread refers to the darkness of night”
  • This hadeeth also proves that the Prophet (salAllaahu alayhi wa salam) was the best person to explain the Quraan. All the more reason to follow his Sunnah.
  • Anas (radiAllahu anhu) narrated that Zaid bin Thabit (radiAllaahu anhu) said, “We took the Sehri with the Prophet. Then he stood for the prayer.” I asked, “What was the interval between the Sehri and the Adhan?” He replied, “The interval was sufficient to recite fifty verses of the Quran.” [Bukhari vol.3 #144]
  • The sahabaa used to share ahadeeth amongst themselves. Not all of them could be with the messenger of Allaah (salAllaahu alayhi wa salam) at all times. Anas was asking Zaid ibn Thaabit about this hadeeth (radiAllaahu anhum)
  • Al-Bukhaari (1919) and Muslim (1092) narrated from Ibn ‘Umar and ‘Aa’ishah that the Messenger of Allaah (upon him be peace and blessings of Allaah) said: “Bilaal gives the adhaan at night. So eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktoom gives the adhaan (for he does not give the adhaan until true dawn comes)”
  • This is evidence that a muadhin can be blind as Ibn Umm Maktoom was blind.
  • It is sunnah to delay the suhoor.
  • There is barakah in waking up to eat suhoor so one should strive to do it, even if just drinking water.
  • Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “Eat Suhoor, for there are blessings in it.” [ Bukhari and Muslim]
