It has been a rough couple of years. Within this time, we have lost my mother and father-in-law to lung cancer and my brother to suicide.

My mother passed after a long, horrid battle with lung cancer a few months ago.

I avoided grieving for many weeks and instead absorbed myself in the settling of her estate. It finally hit me, along with some important realizations.

I sat with her in the hospital and the oncologist's office when we found out she was a terminal case. I helped her fight the disease according to her wishes.

While she was still feeling healthy, I had the opportunity both with time and finances to take her to the Rocky Mountains in NW Montana...a place she always wanted to see. God is good.

I have a career that allowed me to take many days off (with pay) to take her to her chemotherapy and radiation treatments. God is good.

I took her floating down an Ozark stream in a raft. Something she said she wished she could do one more time. It was tough, but we got it done. God is good.

When she entered the terminal stages, I moved in with her for a few weeks as she was alone. My family 30 miles away was very supportive. God is good.

I was again able to take a couple of weeks off at the end with the support and blessings of my employer. God is good.

I carried her to the bathroom. I cleaned her. I dripped morphine in to her mouth for days as she began to pass. God is good.

I had the opportunity to be there at her bedside, holding her hand and talking to her as she passed. God is good.

You see, in the end, we all move on. Allah gave me every opportunity and the energy to do all I could to make this painful transition as best I could for her. I have said good-bye with no regrets.

Thank you, God...You indeed are good and great.

Assalamu-alaikum (Peace be upon you),

Thank you for sharing this immense trial that you have endured, with all of us.

And thank you, for reminding us, that in the midst of pain and loss - our Creator is the most Merciful, most Loving, the Remover of Hardships..... the Giver of Life......and too, the Giver of Death.

"And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits,

but give good tidings to the patient,

Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah , and indeed to Him we will return."

Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy.

And it is those who are the [rightly] guided."
(Surat Al-Baqarah 155-157)

May Allah reward you for trying to make your mums transition into the next world as comfortable as possible.
And may He grant her the best in the Hereafter.
Ameen.
