JOURNEY THROUGH SHARIAH
An Intensive Course on Islamic Law

Following on from our ground breaking course Journey through the Quran, and Journey through the Sirah, IIDR in partnership with the Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) and supported by the Association of Muslim Lawyers (AML) brings to you another unique course – Journey through Shariah.

The Shariah is perhaps the most misunderstood Islamic concept across all audiences – Muslims and non-Muslims alike. This course aims to provide a unique overview on what the Shariah represents, its aims and objective, legal authority and conformity, why differences of opinion exists, the necessity of Shariah.

Drawing upon classical Islamic legal texts and contemporary research into ethics and law, this course aims to leave its participants with an authentic and authoritative understanding of the Shariah.

SHAYKH SM HASAN AL-BANNA
Founding Director, IIDR
SM Hasan al-Banna is the founding director of the Islamic Institute for Development & Research (IIDR) and a member of the Steering Committee of Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (Faculty of Islamic Studies, Qatar Foundation). In addition to pursuing his postgraduate research at Al-Azhar University in Islamic Jurisprudence, he is a successful entrepreneur and CEO of a global publishing and media company. Shaykh Hasan al-Banna has authored and translated several works on Islamic history, law, thought and spirituality. He holds a BA (Hons) in Arabic & Law (SOAS, University of London) and completed the Bar Vocational Course (BVC). His preliminary study of classical Islamic sciences was under the tutelage of his father Shaykh Muhammad Abdul Qadir (a renowned Islamic scholar and Hanafi jurist) and later with notable scholars in the UK and abroad. He studied Arabic language and literature at the Institute Européen des Sciences Humanities (France) and the University of Alexandria (Egypt).

PROFESSOR TARIQ RAMADAN
Professor of Islamic Studies, Oxford University, Director of CILE
Dr Tariq Ramadan is Professor of Islamic Studies teaching in the Faculty of Theology at Oxford University, Director of the Research Centre for Islamic Legislation and Ethics, Senior Research Fellow at St Antony’s College (Oxford), Doshisha University (Kyoto, Japan), and the President of the think tank European Muslim Network (EMN) in Brussels. Professor Tariq Ramadan holds an MA in Philosophy and French literature and PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Geneva. In Cairo, Egypt he received one-on-one intensive training in classic Islamic scholarship from Al-Azhar University scholars. He is considered one of the most influential Muslim intellectuals of the 21st Century. He is the author of The Quest for Meaning: Developing a Philosophy of Pluralism, Radical Reform: Islamic Ethics and Liberation, In the Footsteps of the Prophet: Lessons from the Life of Muhammad, and Western Muslims and the Future of Islam.

DR JASSER AUDA
Deputy Director, CILE
Dr Jasser Auda is an Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Center of Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), Qatar Foundation He is former founding director of the Maqasid Research Center in the Philosophy of Islamic law in London; Fellow of the International Institute of Advanced Systems Research in Canada; and a visiting lecturer to universities and institutes in Egypt, Canada, USA, UK, Malaysia, and India. He has a PhD from the University of Wales, UK, in the philosophy of Islamic law, a PhD from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in systems analysis, in addition to early traditional studies in the Quran and Islamic sciences in Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo. Dr Jasser Auda has published a number of books in Arabic and English, and translated several key books including Sheikh Mohammad al-Ghazali’s Muslim Women between Backward Traditions and Modern Innovations (from Arabic to English), and the former Archbishop Rowan Williams's Islam, Christianity and Pluralism (from English to Arabic). He is the author of Averröes's Premier of the Jurist: Synopsis and Commentary (in Arabic) and Maqasid al-Shari’ah as Philosophy of Islamic law: A System’s Approach (in English).
