Suicide In Islam

As many of you know, I am muslim(alhamdulillah) but I was just wondering anyone can share what they know about the Islamic perspective of "committing suicide".

It is of course Haram as

Surah Al Baqarah Verse 195 says "And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good."

Please do share if you know on the matter!

I was just wondering because a friend of mine committed suicide a few years ago. He was non-muslim. If only he had been introduced to Islam perhaps he would have a better perspective of life..

I've had someone commit suicide, I was working for the mans son and one day he just pulled the rope out and hanged himself. I was shocked, I've always wondered since then, how the hell do you just commit suicide like that?

From an Islamic perspective, suicide is considered a major sin, it doesn't make you a kaffir for having committed it, however, it may lead you to hell due to it's heavy weight. The prophet would not pray the funeral prayer of a person who committed suicide, however, he would allow the Sahaba to do so. From this, the scholars have come to a conclusion that Muslims who hold high ranking within the Muslim world and community are to not attend the funeral prayers of those who commit suicide, but the rest of the people may do so.

Question: What is the ruling regarding suicide in Islaam?

Answer: Suicide is when a person kills himself intentionally by whatever means. This is haraam and regarded as amongst the major sins, and likewise included in the general statement of Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala):{And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and the Wrath and the Curse of Allaah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him}, [Soorah an-Nisaa, Aayah 93]. And it is established from the Sunnah on the authority of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) who said: "Indeed, whoever (intentionally) kills himself, then certainly he will be punished in the Fire of Hell, wherein he shall dwell forever",[Bukhaaree (5778) and Muslim (109 and 110)]. In reality, the one who commits suicide, generally does so because of his desperate situation, either as a direct result of an act of Allaah or a human being. So you find him unable to cope with that which has afflicted him, and in actual fact he is like one who is calling for help from the scorching heat of the fire. So he has progressed from that which was tough (bad) to that which is worse. And if he was patient, then Allaah would have assisted him in dealing with the difficulty.

Should a person who committed suicide be buried without a funeral prayer?

The Permanent Fatwâ Committee of Saudi Arabia issued a fatwâon this topic. They declared that since a person who commits suicide is still a Muslim, he must have a funeral prayer performed for him.

It is a major tenet in the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jamâ`ahthat Muslims who commit major sins remain Muslims and do not become disbelievers by committing such sins.

However, it is permissible for the leader of the Muslim community to abstain from performing the funeral prayer in such circumstances and let others do it. This is similar to what our Prophet (peace be upon him) used to do by abstaining from offering the funeral prayers for those who engaged in major sins.

Sis Limis I managed to read the story and I totally get what you mean. I also agree that it is not in our place to say what their state of mind was when it happened. I wasn't sure how to react as well, sad?angry?pity? It was confusing for me. Seeing his family just hours after it happened I could see that they are in so much pain especially his mother. I think often we often underestimate just how much our mother loves us..

A baby which is miscarried, less than 4 months, no funeral prayer. If a baby is born dead, a funeral prayer has to be performed.
