It would seem his mental health problems were real enough. In fact there were many witnesses in several countries to his erratic and sometimes alarming behaviour. On the boat to Singapore for instance he managed to throw the ship's charts and navigational instruments overboard. He also had a previous record of mental problems. Prior to this event he had - voluntarily - admitted himself to a mental hospital in Epsom, England on two previous occasions.
