View Full Version : Your Opinion: WANTED

Assalaam alaikum.

I received this PM (not going to name the member) a few days ago:

Okay what I wanted to ask was what you think about a site that would rival youtube? I'm not thinking of sites like halatube/islamic tube. But a halal version of youtube without the anti islamic and explicit/haram content.

And do you know anything about setting up a video sharing site? I'm really keen to do this insha Allah, and think you have the expertise to back something like this. Let me know your thoughts insha Allah.
So, what do you think?

I know there are some Islamic youtube sites out there, But this site is not meant to be for strictly Islamic content. The idea is that the site will be like youtube, but minus all the music, and haraam stuff they show...

The member who pm'd me is looking for an appropriate name to call the site. What would you imagine it to be like, how would it work etc?

Some of the suggestions I gave the member have already been taken.

Your opinions will be appreciated.

It'll be like youtube (minus the haram) and members will be able to upload their own videos, comment, like/dislike etc. But the best thing will be that no one will ever be able to put up a video insulting Allah, and our beloved Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Thank you sis.

Insha Allah, this site is in honour of Rasulullah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) and our response to youtube’s refusal to remove the offending anti-islamic videos insulting our beloved Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam). Insha Allah, the main reason for doing this site is that it will be possible to remove content that is morally and religiously offensive, making it more suitable for the muslim user. The site will include other content as long as it is halal e.g. cookery, DIY, educational and more - just like you tube. So I felt a neutral name is more suitable for it. :)

P.S. I am still open to other names as long as they are neutral(ish).

I was open to the idea of an islamic name before but all the good ones were taken. But then I became two minded as the site wont be strictly islamic like halaltube/islamictube etc. So I'm not sure.. TBH, I just want a normal video sharing site that is controlled by muslims so no one can insult our religion/Prophet (SAW) :)

Why do you think it must have an islamic name? :)

flickerjam is growing on me too now :D even though I still feel it's not describing the site well enough...

Some other suggestions I came up with are:

deenwatch.com

wideo.com (asian dialect for saying the word video lol, also rhymes with vimeo - which is a brilliant video sharing site so is easy to remember)

NMV.com (abbreviated from New Muslim Video)

ilmstreet.com (sounds a bit like elm street, but it's ILM street, get it?)

MuslimTV.com - nice and easy

strictlyhalal.com (and you know it)

nasheedTV.com (gives off a good vibe)

DhikrBox.com (sounds like that ice-cream, whats it called again? :D)

nowadays, you can get URL's with the " .TV " extension that replaces the common " .com" extensions et al.... now that is an interesting avenue to explore isn't it?

See if you can get the .tv extension, I really REALLY like it.

Assalamu-alaikum ukthi,

I think we should only embark on such a project with an intention is to keep its content 'strictly islamic'.
(Which also means that videos need to be 'screened' by its admin (which should ideally have knowledgable muslims in the study of deen) - to filter out those videos that may be promoting an view-point thats not reflected in Quraan and Sunnah.
e.g. what to do with Shia uploadings? etc......

Secondly, Islam is a way of life.
So, videos on food, lifestyle, world news, etc - are all important aspects of Islam.

I think an Islamic name is important because:
- We are muslim, and proud of it : )
- If we wish to keep its content halaal, then an Islamic name would automatically infer this.
- The basis for this idea is that we wish to have an Islamic friendly video-sharing channel......so it would make sense to have an Islamic name : )

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wb both,

Thank you for your encouragement and suggestions ukhti Zaria :)

One of the reasons why I prefer a neutral name is that I hope it would attract non muslim audiences to visit the site with a neutral frame of mind, as opposed to an Islamic name which is like rag flag to a bull so that they come with the intention of bashing Islam. The site itself would then act as a dawah tool by showing a clean, peaceful and friendly Islamic environment. Allahu alam. But that is what I secretly hoped for in keeping a neutral name.

But seeing, that an Islamic name is being favoured more, I am willing to change it insha Allah.

Scimi, I like wedeo.com, (I see the 'we' as in ummah) but it's taken, and so are other variations that I tried - such as wideo and wedio. (Apparently the shorter the name, the more people remember it and have ease spreading it.)

How do the following sound to you guys?

deenbox >>> could hear the nasheeds in the background as I say it
deenpad >>> as in a landing pad
deenstreet >>> We could have sign post for the logo. That will look AMAZING! :)

to give an idea for a logo...

Jazakumullah khayr to everyone who is helping. Masha Allah :statisfie

say theres a person out there somewhere, who has, even though being a disbeliever, managed to maintain a decent fitrah and dislikes all forms of dishonest/shameless/vulgar videos etc.

This person may wish to watch a halal, decent cooking show or even brush up on some knowledge of IT principles etc. Slowly the barakah of this site, the blessings Allah bestows on it, wil shine through to the user but what we really dont want is this user being putoff immediately.

hence why I suggested flickerjam and I think although everything should be islamic, we should make it in a way that the whole world feels welcome to it.

However I make dua whatever is used, is blessed by Allaah.

deenwatch has been mentioned twice now. Interesting.

A member PM'd me this:

:sl:

What do you think of naming the site peacetube (its available) in partnership with peace TV ?
interesting, because to make this site take off, it will need some form of sponsorship. NOt to mention the cost of hosting on servers that will have some BIG files on them, and are getting accessed by peeps all over the world. We don;t want bottlenecks on the site availability due to excessive numbers of peeps trying to watch videos.

peacetube.tv - is very remeniscent of peaceTV website... if they agree to sponsor it, it could be just the ticket insha-Allah

I got the PM too, but I am not sure if peacetv will be able sponsor the site as they themselves ask for donations/zakah to run their own tv channel/projects. Secondly, there's already someone I've decided to offer partnership to.

I think the servers may not be too big a problem. I think my son's dad has his own servers but he is out of the country atm. I'll get my son to ask him when he calls him tomorrow insha Allah.

Right now, it's proving quite difficult to choose a domain name so I think we should have a poll. I'll try to put one up tomorrow insha Allah.

Sis, it's gonna be one BIG struggle to get this site noticed amongst the others that already exist. I also understand where sis Purple Cup is coming from, in her post. These other youtube-esque sites are not popular, and often fail due to the lack of awareness for them amongst the Muslim communities.

How do you propose to make this site get "noticed" and do you have experience in this department. If you do, can you give us an example of where a site you have put on the web, has enjoyed popularity?

Do you have links to those sites bro? I've never come across any which is why I thought it'd be a good idea to make one. But if they are as I plan the new site to be then it's better to support one that already exists.

I've only ever put my own site up (retail) and that made me appreciate how difficult it is to advertise. I haven't been committed as I should with SEO, so I can understand what you mean about popularity. It's definitely harder than I imagined.

none of these have really taken off and still remain looking like beta versions because of it

I still think it can work, but like I said - you'll need one BIG sponsor for it, preferably a Muslim owned company that can afford it the exposure on the internet so it can get the awareness it deserves.

Unfortunately, that still means you will have to get a beta version up and running before you can even attempt to approach the potential sponsor for your idea - and the beta version really needs to be on par with youtube at the very least, maybe with a unique selling point attached to it - that youtube doesn't cater to.

Hard work, indeed.

I had a look at the sites but they're different to what I have in mind and I find them difficult to navigate. My brother is doing his masters in film-making and it seemed appropriate to ask for his opinion on the idea. He likes it and thinks it can work but that it will require a lot of monitoring to keep it clean.

On the exposure side, there are various Islamic channels who I am certain will be more than happy to help advertise (maybe even sponsor) the website through their TV channels - one of which has successfully called ALL sects to forget their differences and gather for massive peaceful protest in London in defense of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) honour. Masha Allah. This makes me feel hopeful.

The site also could be a great way for muslims to advertises their businesses to muslim consumers. May Allah grant it success if it will be good for our deen dunya and akhirah.

P.S. I have decided to not register a new name for now.
