Assalamu-alaikum,

An inspiring initiative to create awareness about the plight of our Palestinian brothers and sisters......and can be replicated in other countries as well insha Allah.

PALESTINE SOLIDARITY BILLBOARD CAMPAIGN

BDS South Africa together with the Palestine Solidarity Alliance (PSA) have taken out over 12 billboards across South Africa graphically explaining the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian lands and the dispossession of the Palestinian people.

A local black businessman was inspired by a similar campaign initiated by Henry Clifford in the USA.

USA INITIATIVE

Earlier on this year (2012) Henry Clifford in the USA personally backed a campaign to have ads explaining the Israeli Occupation and Colonization of Palestine put up in New York metro stations. The ads caused much controversy, see this CBS New York news clip:

SOUTH AFRICAN INITIATIVE

A local businessman was inspired by Henry Clifford's campaign in New york and decided to do something similar in South Africa. Twelve billboards have been taken out along highways for BDS South Africa and the Palestine Solidarity Alliance (PSA).

The launch of the South African Palestine solidarity billboards campaign coincides with the month that South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), celebrates its longest-serving president, Oliver Tambo. Hundreds of international guests are expected to arrive in SA's capital, Tshwane/Pretoria, later this month for an international conference commemorating the life of Oliver Tambo. Tambo was crucial in building the successful international isolation of Apartheid South Africa, a strategy that the Palestine solidarity movement is now applying to Israel in an attempt to bring it in line with international law via the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel campaign, which has gained significant ground in recent years.

Some local South African boycott of Israel actions include the recent ANC policy conference's call for a boycott of Israeli goods; the SA government communicating that its policy is to "discourage" trips to Israel; South Africa's Department of Trade and Industry's directive preventing the false-labeling of Israeli settlement products (which are illegal under international law); and, most recently, the University of the Witwatersrand's Student Council announcing a full academic and cultural boycott of Israel.
