can you say post boosting! :D :p

"It has blocked the means to the real happiness of their souls."

how so?

"O Muslims! The restrictions imposed by our religion on the human being are not meant to torture or deprive him from the pleasures of this life. Rather, their aim is to elevate him from mere animalism to complete humanity. Thus, a Muslim will become capable of overcoming subservience and dependence, and his faith and piety will overpower animalistic lusts."

I hope so ... I'm trying to fight lusts everyday.

Forgiving People

Shaykh Saud Ash-Shuraym
20, Rabee‘ul-Awwal 1426 (29 April 2005)

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and his companions.

Fellow Muslims! The most truthful speech is the Book of Allaah and the best guidance is that of Muhammad. The worst of all matters are innovations and every innovation is misguidance.

Dear brethren! Know that the life of this world is just an enjoyment and that the Hereafter is the abode of permanence.

“Fear Allaah, O men of understanding, in order that you may be successful.”

(Al-Maaidah 5:100)

Dear Muslims! Freedom of the heart and the mind from hatred and egoism is a sign of a righteous and amicable Muslim, who has no ill-feeling against anyone and is not jealous of anyone. He is selfless and knows that this world is just a transitory abode and not a permanent one. In his view, this world is nothing but a step stone to the Hereafter. What is the value of man in this world if his heart is filled with selfishness and harshness?

Many are those who are looking for ways to attain glory by all means. But there is a great source of glory that most people are oblivious of, though it is easily attainable: The key to that is a strong will and holding back one’s self from pursuing personal ego.

The desired glory can be attained through having sense of forgiveness. Being gentle-minded, having good opinion of others, excusing others, exonerating people, suppressing anger and forgiving others are some of the most important qualities encouraged by Islaam in human dealings. He who has these qualities deserves to be among the glorious and elevated people. The Messenger of Allaah said, “No wealth is ever diminished by charity. Allaah increases a man who forgives others in nothing but glory and no one humbles himself except that Allaah elevates him.” (Muslim)

According to the narration of Imaam Ahmad, the Messenger of Allaah said, “If an injustice is done to a man and he overlooks it, Allaah will give him glory and victory with it.” This is the essence of glory; O you who are looking for one!

It is a glory and exaltation in this world and in the Hereafter. This is so because Allaah has made a promise to those who possess these qualities when He says,

“And march forth in the way (which leads to) forgiveness from your Lord, and for Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the pious: Those who spend (in Allaah’s Cause) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allaah loves the good-doers).”

(Aal Imraan 3:133-134)

Dear brethren! Those who suppress their anger are those who do not vent their rage on people. They rather desist from bothering others and hope to get their reward from Allaah. Those who forgive are those who overlook the wrong done to them by others. They bear no grudge in their hearts against anyone. Whoever possesses these qualities should rejoice with the love of Allaah for him, for he has attained a level of righteousness and Allaah says, “Allaah loves the righteous.” Allaah loves whoever is righteous; and if He loves someone He forgives him and shows mercy to him.

Fellow Muslims! Forgiveness is a symbol of the pure, righteous, deliberate and pleasant Muslim. Forgoing one’s rights is a kind of preferring the benefits of the Hereafter above that of this world. Being generous to others with pure a mind and out of piety commands their love and respect.

Forgiving others is not an easy matter. For, one has to fight and overcome one’s self-centredness and sense of revenge. This can only be achieved by the strong men who are able to overpower the desires of their heart even though they are able to express their anger. Allaah says,

“And indeed whosoever takes revenge after he has suffered wrong, for such there is no way (of blame) against them.”

(Ash-Shooraa 42:41)

Forgoing one’s right and having self-control are signs of overcoming the norms. This is where one stands distinguished from others. This is the real strong person that the Prophet praised, according to the hadeeth reported by al-Bukhaaree and Muslim. The Messenger of Allaah also said, “Whoever suppresses his anger while he is able to express it, Allaah will call him in the presence of all creatures [on the Day of Resurrection] and ask him to choose of the houris [of Paradise] the ones he likes.” (Ahmad)

Fellow Muslims! Since the day our distinguished religion encouraged adoption of sense of pardon and forgiveness, it did not do in a narrow sense. It rather makes it wide-ranging so that it can include many aspects of private and public interactions. Islaam encourages people of higher authority to adopt sense of forgiveness as part of their policy, for doing so is a sign of successful leadership. Allaah commands His Messenger to adopt this policy when He says,

“Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the foolish (i.e. don't punish them).”

(Al-A‘raaf 7:199)

He also says,

“And by the Mercy of Allaah, you dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you; so pass over (their faults), and ask (Allaah’s) Forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affairs.”

(Aal ‘Imraan 3:195)

This encouragement to adopt the sense of forgiveness is also extended where blood and requital are involved. Allaah says,

“But if anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity, it shall be for him expiation.”

(Al-Maaidah 5:45)

The spouses are also encouraged to demonstrate sense of forgiveness concerning bridal money if divorce occurs before the marriage is consummated. Allaah says,

“And if you divorce them before you have touched (had a sexual relation with) them, and you have appointed unto them the Mahr (bridal-money given by the husbands to his wife at the time of marriage), then pay half of that (Mahr), unless they (the women) agree to forego it, or he (the husband), in whose hands is the marriage tie, agrees to forego and give her full appointed Mahr. And to forego and give (her the full Mahr) is nearer to At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness).”

(Al-Baqarah 2:237)

People are encouraged to exercise sense of forgiveness when they transact with one another. The Messenger of Allaah said, “Whoever frees a Muslim from a commercial obligation, Allaah will forgive his sins.” (Aboo Daawood and Ibn Maajah)

The Prophet also informed us about a merchant who used to give loan to people. Whenever he realizes that one of his debtors was in a financially strained situation, he would command his workers, “Write off some of his debt [or all of it], that Allaah may wipe off our sins. So, Allaah wiped off his sins.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

The spirit of forgiveness while dealing with others is generally emphasized in the case of a man who came to the Messenger of Allaah and asked him, “How many times shall we forgive [our] servants?” The Prophet did not respond. The man repeated the question and the Prophet yet did not respond. When the question was repeated again, the Prophet said, “Forgive him seventy times every day.” (Aboo Daawood and at-Tirmidhee)

Dear brethren! Forgiving others and overlooking their mistakes do not in any way mean weakness or submissiveness. It is rather an excellent example of bravery, doing favour to others and suppressing one’s desires, especially when this spirit of forgiveness is exercised in the time of strength.

Imaam al-Bukhaaree titled a chapter in his Saheeh concerning avenging the injustice with the saying of Allaah,

“And those who, when an oppressive wrong is done to them, take revenge.”

(Ash-Shooraa 42:39)

He then narrated that an-Nakha‘ee said, “The righteous predecessors did not like to be humiliated; but if they were capable of avenging a wrong done to them, they would forgive.”

Al-Hasan ibn ‘Alee said, “If someone insults me in this ear of mine and apologizes in the other, I would accept his apology.”

Ja ‘far as-Saadiq said, “To regret twenty times for forgiving people is dearer to me than to regret for punishing them once.”

Al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyaad said, “If someone comes to you complaining about another person, tell him: ‘My brother, forgive him, for forgiveness is close to piety.’ If he says: ‘But my heart cannot bear that. I would rather take revenge as Allaah has commanded me.’ Tell him: ‘If you are able to take revenge in the best manner, you can proceed to do so; but if you are not, resort to forgiveness, for its gate is wide. He who forgives and amends, his reward is with Allaah. The one who forgives passes his night in his bed happily and contentedly but the one who takes revenge always ponders on these things. This is because; magnanimity lies in forgiving one’s brethren.”

However, there are some people whose hearts are so hardened that they cannot forgive anyone. Nothing in this life is more important to them than taking revenge. They are like permanent clouds. They are neither pleased with secret or public apology. They notice the slightest wrong done to them but they fail to consider the apology however clear it is. They would listen with one of their ears to some sayings and they would convulsively rage for what they hear, yet they would block the other ear from listening to any apology even it is backed with proofs.

He whose situation is this is an enemy of himself who have been subdued by the desire, thereby forcing him from the righteous quality of forgiveness to the abhorrent trait of seeking revenge. ‘Aaishah narrated, “The Messenger of Allaah never beat any woman or servant with his hand. He never struck anyone with his hand except when he was fighting in the way of Allaah. Also, he never avenged any harm done to him, except if one of the sanctities of Allaah was being violated. Then he would take revenge for Allaah.” (Muslim)

Though avenging an injustice is everyone’s right, yet forgiveness is perfection and piety. Allaah says,

“The recompense for an evil is an evil like thereof; but whoever forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allaah. Verily, He likes not the Zâlimûn (oppressors, polytheists, and wrong-doers).”

(Ash-Shooraa 42:40)

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as He should be feared and know that Islaam’s encouragement of sense of forgiveness is not restricted to what is outward and apparent. It should rather be adopted apparently and inwardly. A Muslim should not only give up his right to revenge, he should also forgive the offender from his heart. Allaah commands His Prophet,

“Overlook (O Muhammad (peace be upon him)) their faults with gracious forgiveness.”

(Al-Hijr 15:85)

There are many places in the Qur’aan where Allaah encourages both relinquishing the right to avenge and forgiveness. He says,

“But forgive them, and overlook (their misdeeds). Verily, Allaah loves good-doers.”

(Al-Maaidah 5:13)

He also says,

“But forgive and overlook, till Allaah brings His Command.”

(Al-Baqarah 2:109)

And He says,

“And let not those among you who are blessed with graces and wealth swear not to give (any sort of help) to their kinsmen, Al-Masâkîn (the poor), and those who left their homes for Allaah’s Cause. Let them pardon and forgive. Do you not love that Allaah should forgive you? And Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

(An-Noor 24:22)

Allaah also says,

“O you who believe! Verily, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you (i.e. may stop you from the obedience of Allaah), therefore beware of them! But if you pardon (them) and overlook, and forgive (their faults), then verily, Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

(At-Taghaabun 64:14)

To overlook and forgive are some of the qualities of our Prophet. Where then are those who are ready to emulate him?! Where are those who have been overwhelmed by sense of revenge? Where do they stand regarding beautiful qualities of the leader of the Messengers?

The mother of the faithful, ‘Aaishah was asked about the character of the Messenger of Allaah. She answered, “The Messenger of Allaah was never given to immoral sayings and deeds. Neither did he ever raise his voice in market places. He did never reciprocate a wrong done to him with the like. He would rather overlook and forgive.” (At-Tirmidhee)

Allaah says,

“That which is with Allaah (Paradise) is better and more lasting for those who and put their trust in their Lord (concerning all of their affairs). And those who avoid the greater sins, and Al-Fawâhish (illegal sexual intercourse), and when they are angry, they forgive.”

(Ash-Shooraa 42:6-37)

Dreams And Their Interpretations
Jumaadal ulaa 23, 1423 (July , 2002)[/

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Men love to wade into issues of unseen, be they past and future. To deny this phenomenon amounts to the denial and prevention of reality. The severity or otherwise of this phenomenon depends on people's closeness to the light of prophethood and true religion that firmly controls this issue of which Allaah says,

"He alone is the All-Knower of the Unseen, and He reveals to none His Unseen; except to a Messenger (from mankind) whom He has chosen."

(Al-Jinn 72:26-27)

It is no wonder then that we see in this contemporary age – those who wade into the issues of unseen and we observe that many weak-minded people would want to know it, either through superstitious means or by making conjectures, though the verses of Allaah are being recited to them all the time. Allaah says,

Say (O Muhammad): None in the heavens and the earth knows the Unseen except Allaah, nor can they perceive when they shall be resurrected."
(An-Naml 27:65)

The Prophet's sayings are also read to these people regarding the Unseen. Among these sayings is, "There are five things which none knows except Allaah:

'Verily with Allaah is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Allaah is the All-Knower, All-Aware.'

(Luqmaan 31:34)

"(At-Tirmidhee)

Therefore, matters of the Unseen should not be waded into except in the light of the Quraan and the Sunnah. Whatever besides that are mere conjectures if not illusions.

Islaam in its very essence is a religion that removes all superstitions. So, belief in the Unseen should not be regarded as belief in fantasies.

However, there are some people, who, though they are safe from this superstition, they fall into another evil, whereby they take their dreams as having strong connection with their future and you see them happy or sad because of mere dreams. This phenomenon is not peculiar with common men alone, but many great men have become affected by their dreams and many a nation has been preoccupied by the influence of its dream. Prophet Yousuf's dream and the King of Egypt's are not unknown to us. In both dreams, there had been good news and warning at the same time.

Brethren in faith! Dreams have their importance in the life of people before and after the advent of Islaam; but that importance may differ in the views of learned and cultured people as a result of the differences in authorities. The philosophers deny the dreams and attribute them to physical dispositions that only reflect what is in the mind of the dreamer. Some psychologists also have similar view, for they regard dreams as a mixture of moods that settle in one's memory and which is excited by sleep.

In Islaam, the Muslim scholars have followed the path of Prophethood in line with what is mentioned in the Quraan and Sunnah. They believe that good and truthful dreams are true ones from Allaah. Some of these bear good news an some bear warnings. The Prophet said, "Prophethood is gone, but announcers remain." The companions said, "What are announcers?" He answered, "Good dreams that man sees or that are seen for him."

Announcers here may be that of good news or bad news for Allaah says,

"And give them tidings of a painful torment."

It is these dreams about which the Prophet said, "When the end of time nears, the dream of a believer will always almost come true. The truest among you in dreams is the truest among you in speech. The dream of a believer is one of 46 parts of Prophethood." (Al-Bukhaaree & Muslim)

Brethren in Islaam! Many people have been led to distress as a result of spiritual vacuum and farness from Allaah and lack of belief in His predecree, that it is only what He wills that be and that what He wills not shall never be. Many have depended on dreams and visions in a way that is contrary to the path of our righteous predecessors. The matter of dreams have become widespread among people that they seldom talk of other things and the issue has dominated even satellite channels and Islaamic legal fatwas so much so that questions pertaining to dreams double those of other matters of religion. All this is a result of the rampant ignorance as to the correct stand the Muslim must take as regards dreams in spite of the fact that the Prophet has left us on a Clear Path. The matter has come to the extent that if anyone of us has a dream, he will become disturbed and will not feel secured until he finds one who will interpret the dream for him. Had everyone of us stand by the guidance of the Prophet, we would not have plunged ourselves into this deplorable quagmire.

In order to know the best way to deal with dreams, let us listen to these excellent etiquettes.

Imaam Muslim reported that Aboo Salamah said: I used to see dreams that make me sick. When I met Aboo Qataadah, I told him that and he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allaah saying: 'A good dream is from Allaah and a bad one is from Satan, if anyone of you sees what he dislikes, let him spit on to his left side three times, and let him seek refuge with Allaah from its evil; for it cannot harm him.'" In another narration, Aboo Salamah said, "I used to have dreams that seemed heavier on me than a mountain, but as soon as I heard this hadeeth, I do not worry about them any more."

It becomes clear here that, not all that man sees in his dream can be interpreted; for dreams are of three types as explained by the Messenger of Allaah when he said, "Dreams are of three types: (1) Intimidations from Satan by which he causes sorrow to man. (2) What man feels concerned of in his wakefulness and sees in his dreams. (3) A dream that is one of the 46 parts of prophethood." Al-Bagawee said, "This hadeeth explains that not all that man sees in his dream can be true, though it can be interpreted. The true dream is the one that comes from Allaah and whatever besides that are just confused dreams that have no interpretations. Of those confused dreams is the one reported from a Bedouin Arab who told the Prophet that he saw in a dream that his head was cut off and was rolling away and that this made him seriously worried. The Prophet told him, 'Do not tell people of Satan's toying with you in your dream.'"

On how to treat this kind of dreams which is prevalent in the case of many people; the etiquettes taught by the Sunnah are the following:

- Seeking refuge with Allaah from the harm of this dream and the evil of Satan.

- The dreamer should slightly spit on his left side three times when he wakes up.

- He should not tell it to anybody.

- He should perform his obligatory prayers.

- He should change the side on which he was sleeping.

- Some scholars add that he must recite Aayatul-Kursiy. An-Nawawee said, "One must combine between all these etiquettes, but if one does only some, that is enough for him by the permission of Allaah."

As for the second kind of dreams, it is what man feels in his mind during wakefulness, like thinking of travel, business, etc. So, when he sleeps, he sees in his dreams what he was thinking about. Those are also confused dreams that have no interpretations.

The only remaining dream now is the true and good one that comes form Allaah and is a good tidings or warning. It may be very clear and needs no interpretation like the dream of Prophet Ibraheem when he sees in his dream that he was slaughtering his son. It can also be hidden with signs that need interpretation like that of Prophet Yoosuf's prison mates. It is this type that the Prophet forbade to be narrated to none but a scholar and a truthful person. He said, "Do not narrate dreams but to a scholar or a truthful person." (At-Tirmidhee)

Whatever besides this of dreams that relate to establishment of an Islaamic ruling regarding halaal, haraam, acts of worship or identifying the Lailatul Qadr like the one shown to the Messenger of Allaah and about which he was made to forget, or the ones on which are based extended effects that relate to people's rights, or that cause ill feelings or that cast doubt on people's uprightness or intentions; all that are confused dreams that should be totally ignored according to the opinion of majority of scholars like Ash-Shaatibee, An-Nawawee, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Al-Qayyim and others.

Ash-Shaatibee narrated in his book "Al-I'tisaam" that when Khaleefah Al-Mahdee wanted to kill Shareek bin Abdillaah Al-Qaadee, Shareek asked him, "O Commander of the faithfuls! Why do you want to kill me while you are forbidden to kill an innocent soul?" Al-Mahdee replied, "Because, I saw it in a dream that I was addressing you but you were addressing with your back against me. So I asked the dream interpreter and he said, 'This man comes to your court but disagrees with you secretly.'" Shareek then said, "O Commander of the faithfuls! Your dream is not that of Prophet Yoosuf, son of Prophet Ya'qoob; and the Muslims' blood should not be shed through mere dreams." Al-Mahdee then lowered his head and made signal that I should go."

Ibn 'Asaakir also reported in his book that someone saw Imaam Ash-Shafi'ee in his dream and that he told him, "Yoonus bin Abdil A'laa lied against me in a hadeeth that was not part of my hadeeth and I did not narrate it." Ibn Katheer, while making a comment on this dream said, "Yoonus bin Abdil A'laa is one of the most trustworthy men. He should not be discredited by mere dreams."

Adh-Dhahabee reported from Al-Marroojee that he said, "I made Ibraheem Al-Husary enter upon Ahmad bin Hanbal and he was a righteous man. Ibraheem told Ahmad: 'I saw a dream for you which is so and so' and he mentioned Paradise.' Imaam Ahmad then told him: 'My brother, people used to tell Sahl bin Salaamah things like this until he went out and shed innocent blood.' Imaam Ahmad also said, 'Good dreams gladden a believer but do not deceive him.' "

Fellow Muslims! Having said much on people's excesses in matters relating to dreams, it is an act of impartiality to speak about those who interpret dreams; for they shoulder a huge responsibility towards the dreamers. The dream interpreter should be well-versed in this field and should be able to know its benefits and harms. He should not turn himself to dream mufti especially on T.V. screens and in meeting places.

Interpreting dreams and giving religious verdicts are companions. Ibn Al-Qayyim said, "The Mufti, the dream interpreter and the physician are equal in that, they have access to people's secrets which others do not. They must therefore, conceal what should not be revealed."

Further, the interpreters should never rush into conclusions while they interpret dreams. They should consider the risk of that as well as the trial and ostentation that that it may cause. They should also bear it in mind that, their situation is more critical than that of the muftis and scholars.

Ibn Abdil Barr reported that Hishaam bin Hassaan said, "Ibn Seereen would be asked of hundreds of dreams, and he could not interpret anything before he say, 'Fear Allaah in your wakefulness, for whatever you see in your dream will never harm you.' And when he interprets he would say, 'I am only interpreting on assumption; and assumptions could be correct or wrong.'" If this is the saying of the leader of dream interpreters in his age and later generations, what then would one say about those who came after him.

The interpreters should realise that interpreting dreams on T.V. screens is dangerous in the light of these factors:

1- Unrestrained openness in interpreting dreams is a kind of temptation, especially, when he speaks on Unseen matters which are only known to Allaah.

2- His ability to know the actual condition of the dreamer. Two men came to Ibn Seereen and each of them said that he saw himself in the dream making adhaan and asked him of the meaning of that dream. Ibn Seereen interpreted it for the righteous man of the two that he would perform Hajj, and for the other man who was not righteous that he would steal.

3- People's lack of understanding the method of the interpreter which may easily lead to his being accused of fortunetelling, conjecture or future-telling.

4- That to prevent harm should be given precedence above earning benefits.

As for the argument of some people that the Prophet used to ask his companions after Fajr, "Who among you had seen a dream?" This can be replied in the light of the following points:

1- That, it is the Messenger of Allaah and that his interpretation is truth and flawless.

2- His interpretations took place in the mosque in the presence of a number of Muslim companions who were far less than millions that view it on T.V. channels today.

3- It has not been established that any of his companions or their successors did that in the mosque as the Prophet used to do, even Aboo Bakr As-Siddeeq whom the Prophet attested to his knowledge of dream interpreting never did so.

Therefore, fear Allaah and be dutiful to him in private and public, that you may prosper.

Woman’s Cause
Shaykh Saud Ash-Shuraym

23, Rabee‘ul-aakhir 1425 (11, June 2004)

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Allaah has made man and woman the foundation of mankind. No one can live without the other. If not, there would not have been procreation. That is why Allaah reminds us of this blessings when He says,

“It is He Who has created you from a single person (Adam), and (then) He has created from him his wife (Hawwâ' (Eve)) in order that he might enjoy the pleasure of living with her.”

(Al-A‘raaf 7:189)

Woman is undoubtedly, the source of stability for man and the family, not to talk of her being the half of the society. It is she that also gives birth to the other half. It is as if she is the entire society.

Dear brethren! The cause of woman is an all-important topic that is inevitable for the contemporary Muslim society. It is at the same time, a very delicate topic that is prone to errors, desires, strong environmental impacts and objective differences.

It is actually unfair to discuss woman and all matters relating to her in this short khutbah. But it is better than not saying anything at all about her.

We are saying this at a time that the woman issue has become the sole preoccupation of many especially in this time that the Ummah is facing kinds of injustices, oppression, poverty, ideological perversion and suppression from the enemies. Yet no tangible solution to this myriad of problems is seen in sight.

We are hereby calling on all those who are talking about woman’s cause to take the following factors into consideration in order to avoid going astray and innovating what Allaah has not permitted and what none of our righteous successors had not done.

One: It should be firmly borne in mind that the only source of determining the identity of both and female and deciding things they share in common and things in which they differ and the responsibilities of each of them is the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, and not men’s opinions and their desires. It should also be remembered that contradicting anything from the Qur’aan and the Sunnah is tantamount to challenging the One Who revealed Islaam. Allaah says,

“Do they then seek the judgement of (the Days of) Ignorance? And who is better in judgement than Allaah for a people who have firm Faith.”

(Al-Maaidah 5:50)

Therefore, there should be no way for a vicious twisting of Islaamic criteria and giving them other names, like calling woman’s modesty, bashfulness and covering an obsolete and unjustifiable tradition by which woman is repressed.

Two: All sincere and true followers of the religion of Islaam should stop those writers whose only intention is to attack the values of this Ummah or turn them into an object of derision at the hand of lust worshippers or those who hate what Allaah revealed. Those who use their pens and tongues to drown the ship of this Ummah and deceive the Muslims into believing that the only way to scientific, industrial and cultural progress lies in adopting Western experiment on women. The fact of the matter is that the no-Muslim countries who clamour for the so-called liberation of Muslim women and those who mimic them among other nations have, in reality, very little to show for what they clamour for. Realities in their own countries are a stark contradiction of the huge noise they make about the Muslim world. The highest achievement they achieved in their own countries regarding women liberation did not exceed electing few women into parliaments or appointing one or two as ministers, while deceiving the simple-minded people into a belief that the woman has achieved a lot in their own societies.

More surprising is the fact that, in the constitutions of some of these so-called developed countries, woman is forbidden from being head of state. What moral right do these countries then have to call for women liberation?

This should not however be surprising, for it seems that these infidel countries understood the following Prophetic statement more than the so-called Muslim advocates of women liberation. The Prophet said, “Any nation that appoints a woman as its leader will not succeed.” (Al-Bukhaaree)

In a version reported by Ahmad, the Messenger of Allaah said, “The men are ruined whenever they follow the women.”

Dear brethren! What the reality shows is that the greatest achievement of those countries in which women have been ‘liberated’ is that she has been turned into a humiliated commodity in brothels or images in musical clips or mere bodies displayed to advertise goods.

Three: Using the word ‘freedom’ or ‘liberation’ in every issue relating to women have become an instrument in the hands of ignorant, deluded and evil-intentioned people who seek to disintegrate the Muslims’ social cohesion. It has actually becomes a door through which the enemy throws his time bomb, because to the term ‘freedom’ has a magical way of deluding the masses especially the teenagers. The strangest thing is the three phases that the advocates of so-called women liberation want to use to liberate the woman from her self-enslavement through adherence to the teachings of Islaam.

The first phase is exemplified by their assertion that they are responsible for treating the problems that occur among the Muslims, and that no view would be accepted if it contradicts their own way of reasoning. Their proof for this is the wide intellectual and cultural difference that is between them and ordinary citizens.

In the second phase, they claim that their write-ups and essays indicate their sincerity to and sense of compassion for the Ummah, in that they are calling for truth and knowledge. They assert that knowledge is a product of freedom and that if there is no freedom from previous ideologies, the desired goal cannot be achieved.

In the third phase, these self-styled intellectuals establish that that everything should be subjected to free scientific research; and their word ‘everything’ exclude nothing, even our belief, teachings and our virtuous heritage.

These phases undoubtedly seem attractive to simple-minded individuals. But the sooner they know that they are like smoke released by the enemy to disguise their invasion the better.

Four: There is no society that toyed with the issue of woman and her values and cast doubt on the Islaamic regulations laid down for her protection and sought to undermine those qualities with which she is distinguished from and qualities with which man is distinguished from her except that the society incurred on itself evils and woes and Allaah afflicted it with what it is trying to escape from. The Messenger of Allaah was right when he said, “I have not left a fitnah for the men of my Ummah greater than women.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

He also said, “Beware of this worldly life and beware of women, for the first fitnah faced by the children of Israel was in women.” (Muslim)

Brethren in faith! Let us recall the incidence of the famous Dhee Qaar Battle, which is one of the fiercest battles of pre-Islamic period. This battle was initiated because of a woman whom Chosroe wanted to marry and Nu‘maan refused to let him marry her. Another example was the Jewish conspiracy to remove hijaab from the head of a Muslim woman in the market of Banoo Qaynuqaa during the time of Allaah’s Messenger.

Five: The Islaamic religion will never accept extremism in matters relating to woman. Never will Islaam condone the woman being humiliated or relegated to the margins of life. Neither will it accept her being led to moral degeneration. Both paths are extreme. The Ummah should not tolerate the pessimistic bigots nor should it give a chance to those who toy with religious values.

The Muslim Ummah is not a nation that suppresses woman and deny her her rights, though some bigots may support their negative attitude to women with spurious hadeeths like, “Obeying a woman brings about a regret.” On the other hand, it should not allow those who seek to lure woman out of her nature through deceit and lies. These elements also support their deviated ideology with fake narrations like, “Take your religion from this humayraa [meaning: ‘Aaishah].”

The proper thing is to maintain a moderate stand, which is just and fair. Whatever has a proof from the Qur’aan and the Sunnah is the truth even if it followed by a single person, and whatever contradicts them is falsehood even if it followed by the vast majority.

It is also a big error to claim that conciliation could made between those who call woman to observe the proper Islaamic covering and those who call her to abandon the hijaab, to shamelessly expose herself and to do away with modesty. Allaah says about those who try to reconcile between these two groups,

“(They are) swaying between this and that, belonging neither to these nor to those; and he whom Allaah sends astray, you will not find for him a way (to the truth - Islaam).”

(An-Nisaa 4:143)

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah and beware of innovations for every innovation is heresy and every heresy is misguidance. Allaah says,

“O you who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allaah, but do that which they are commanded.”

(At-Tahreem 66:6)

Brethren in Islaam! The sixth factor is specially related to woman. Her job in this life and in the society is not based on enslaving her or exploiting her body. The woman rather has rights in the society and family. She has right to attend mosques, she has right to eliminate illiteracy, she has right to give and receive admonition and in receiving and imparting knowledge and education. She has right to enjoin virtues and forbid vices. She has right to improve herself whenever she has a job that is suitable for her naturally and religiously like in the fields of useful knowledge and righteous deeds. For the Ummah is in dire need of female Muslim teachers, Muslim female nurses and doctors and Muslim female writers. The woman herself needs to fill her head with knowledge and righteous sciences and not to strip her head and her body naked and to regard her religion with displeasure.

The job of the woman in the society shall remain critical and delicate, and no negligence or bitter experiment shall be tolerated on her. The entire society is also required to maintain honours and not to toy with them. The successful nation is the one capable of striking a balance between these noble goals for woman and the society’s needs. It does not put in a guilty cage nor does it leave her free to become prey to sins and immoralities.

The final factor, dear brethren, is that, it has to be made clear that a call for equality between male and female in all aspects of life is like a call for impossibility. The true Muslim believes that Allaah created both man and woman and created for each, peculiar qualities. He only made man excelled over woman with a degree. He says,

“And they (women) have rights (over their husbands as regards living expenses) similar (to those of their husbands) over them (as regards obedience and respect) to what is reasonable, but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them. And Allaah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.”

(Al-Baqarah 2:228)

Allaah distinguished man with prophethood, political leadership, administration of the law, leadership in prayer, fighting in the way of Allaah, marrying without a guardian, power of divorce, having double of what woman has in some cases of inheritance, the fact that the child carries man’s name, permission to marry up to four wives and the fact that his testimony equals that of two women.

Imaam Ahmad reported that Umm Salamah asked the Messenger of Allaah, “O Allaah’s Messenger, why do men engage in jihad and we [women] do not? Why are we apportioned the half of [of a male’s share] in inheritance?” Thereupon, Allaah revealed the verse:

“And wish not for the things in which Allaah has made some of you to excel others. For men there is reward for what they have earned, (and likewise) for women there is reward for what they have earned, and ask Allaah of His Bounty. Surely, Allaah is Ever All-Knower of everything.”

(An-Nisaa 4:32)

Al-Qurtubee said, “Man’s virtue over woman is clear for every wise person. Had there been no evidence for this besides a fact that she is created from man and that he is her origin and she is prevented from undertaking anything without his permission that would have been enough.”

Dear brethren! The excellence of man does not, however, mean looking down upon woman and discriminating against her. Nor does this mean that every man is better every woman. It is an established principle that declaring a thing as better than another does not mean degrading the latter. The Qur’aan is entirely the word of Allaah, yet the Messenger of Allaah said that ‘Aayah al-Kursiyy’ is the best verse in the Qur’aan, as reported by Muslim.

Also the Messengers and Prophets also excelled one another. Allaah says,

“We have preferred some of the Prophets above others.”

(Al-Israa 17:55)

This verse does not however mean that the status of the Messengers and the Prophets above whom others are preferred.

Fellow Muslims! Having mentioned evidences on men’s excellences over women, we are also asserting, in the light of the evidences of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, that women are halves of men. They are equal to men in matters of belief and morals. They are equal to them in their entitlement to reward and punishment.

We are also asserting the falsehood and injustice of a statement being a male augments one’s scale of good deeds and that being a female decreases one’s scale of good deeds. This statement vividly contradicts the saying of Allaah,

“Verily, the most honourable of you with Allaah is most pious. Verily, Allaah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.”

(Al-Hujuraat 49:13)

Real life experiences have shown that woman can be better than many men as in the case of the mothers of the faithful and those who were after them. Being a male or female is not a criterion for weighing deeds on the Day of Resurrection. As femininity is not an imperfection for the sun so does masculinity is not a source of pride for the moon. And as the saying goes, a lioness in her jungle is better and stronger than a cock among the fowl.

Therefore, the fundamental rule in this matter lies in Allaah’s word that goes says,

“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allaah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allaah and to their husbands), and guard in the husband's absence what Allaah orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husband's property).”

(An-Nisaa 4:34)

Excellent post, Arwa!

Danish, I wish I dreamed about pastries and cookies. The coolest dream I ever had involved a ninja and lots of butt-whooping. But can you imagine how infinitely cooler it would be if he was simultaneously munching on a Cornish Pastie?

First Khutbah:

O Muslims! As the years have passed, various groups of people have discussed a very important issue which many communities have in common. People from all walks of life with different interests have discussed the positive and negative aspects of this issue, because it is a very important topic. Many people have commented on this through various means such as magazines, mosques, clubs and other media, and from many different points of view.

This issue, O slaves of Allaah, is that of summer or yearly vacations, which has become an indispensable event for many people. All nations agree that this event has become a part of our lives and cannot be ignored. It has imposed itself to be a part of a fixed yearly plan, and in most cases it is unorganised and poorly planned, despite the fact that people feel that it is a necessity.

When people think of their vacation, they do not seem to have the proper objectives, and their plans seem to lack the limitations of time and place, let alone the adherence to the Islamic guidelines that should define what can and cannot be done during them.

Only an arrogant or ignorant person would deny the fact that people need to rest after long periods of hard work, and that they need to relax after stress. Islaam does not oblige people to make all their words as those of the remembrance of Allaah, nor to make all their time be occupied with acts of worship. Rather, Islaam has permitted rest and relaxation within defined limits. As a mater of fact, when a companion of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam by the name of Handhalah Ibn ‘Aamir, may Allaah be pleased with him, came to the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam complaining that the strength and level of his Eemaan decreased when he returned home and played with his wife and children (as opposed to the time when he was with the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam). The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam replied to this by saying: “A time for this and a time for that” (Bukhaari & Muslim) which means an hour for worship and increasing ones Eemaan, and an hour for living ones life within the limits and boundaries of Islaam, which would also help one increase their Eemaan.

Ibn ‘Abdul-Barr, may Allaah have mercy upon him, narrated that ‘Ali Ibn Abu Taalib, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "Relax your hearts and find some means of entertainment for them, because they become apathetic just as bodies get tired."

Ibn Al-Jawzi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "I have observed that man has shouldered many difficult responsibilities and obligations. Amongst the heaviest of burdens is controlling himself and persevering through that which he likes and dislikes, and it seems to me that the correct thing to do is interrupt that with something that entertains."

This is how we should understand mixing seriousness with amusement and hard work with relaxation, but there are important questions regarding the behaviour of many Muslims during vacations that must be asked. How far does amusement go during vacations? What is the ideal way of utilising our time and maintaining our priorities? What should be our real understanding of vacationing? Is it too much sleep? Is it holding expensive and extravagant weddings? Is it switching days into nights and nights into days? Or is excessive TV and internet viewing?

These are questions which come from the heart of every believing man and woman, who have a conscience and are deeply concerned by the manner in which our youth are spending their time and utilising their health.

This topic requires a detailed research, so that objectives can be set for the fruitful utilisation of time, and so that limits can be set for people so that they remain within Islamic boundaries. Such a research can be conducted by studying all available entertainment programs and evaluating their pros and cons, and by establishing a strong link between them, Islamic guidelines and people’s customs and traditions; This could be in the form of a study that finds inventive ways of accomplishing relaxation, entertainment and other benefits along with the pleasure of Allaah during peoples vacations, and which analyses people’s actions and reactions based on Islaam, in light of people’s interests and hobbies. This would be a study that discovers the benefits that vacations give, such as reviving people, energising them and increasing their productivity, which will reflect on their communities and benefit them in this life and the Hereafter.

O Muslims! In order to recognise mature and responsible communities, who are concerned about their individuals and the utilisation of the wasted human resources within their ranks, we must observe what their stance is regarding vacations and holiday periods, as well as the serious researches that they conduct in order to find solutions for the negative and unsavoury aspects of vacations.

Indeed if we were to attempt to go into detail about the negative practices that take place during vacations in many of our communities, it would take too long a time, but we will mention just a few to give an idea about what takes place. It is best to be clear and honest about these vacations which in many cases stray away from the teachings and boundaries of Islaam.

One of the most dispraised practices during vacations is when people switch their days into nights and vice versa; people stay up all night with useless talk and incorrect behaviour. Sometimes this even involves sinful words and actions. Some people spend their nights dancing or listening to music, and then when the day comes they spend it sleeping, heedless of the remembrance of Allaah, let alone in His worship. Such practices make people heedless of the fact that Allaah made nights to rest in and days for working, and that the alternation of the day and night is one of the signs of the greatness of Allaah. In fact, when Allaah wanted to give the disbelievers an example of His might and power He mentioned the alternation of the day and night, as He says that which translates as: “Say: 'Have you considered: if Allaah should make for you the night continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allaah could bring you light? Then will you not hear?' Say: 'Have you considered: if Allaah should make for you the day continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allaah could bring you a night in which you may rest? Then will you not see?' And out of His Mercy He made for you the night and the day that you may rest therein and [by day] seek from His bounty and [that] perhaps you will be grateful.” (Al-Qasas: 71-73).

Slaves of Allaah! From among the incorrect practices which frequently occur during vacations and for which people in general and women in particular long for, are the evil practices which occur during weddings. In preparation for such events people spend excessive amounts of money and concentrate all their efforts in this, they spend ridiculous amounts on renting the halls where the event is to be held and boast to others about doing so. They go to ridiculous lengths in shopping for the event, and women expose their adornment during these times. All of this happens prior to the wedding, as well as huge amounts of money spent on clothes, food and drinks – solely for the purpose of boasting and showing off. Dowries are so high that it seems as if many couples are living in separate eras, the husband in one which has passed and the wife in one which is yet to come, so how can these two eras be reconciled?

Some young men barely have enough to live on, while the parents of the young ladies they wish to marry spend wastefully; some young men just wish to get married while the parents of the young ladies they wish to get married to simply wish to boast. Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that a man came to the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam seeking assistance and said: "I have married a woman from the Ansaar." The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam replied: “How much did you pay? (i.e., as dowry)” the man replied: "One hundred and sixty silver coins" the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “One hundred and sixty silver coins! It is as though some of you dig silver out from a mountain! - I have nothing to give you” (Muslim).

Another evil practice which is widespread during vacations is the satellite television channels which prepare programs especially for the summer vacation. They prepare for these just as people prepare to face an enemy; they compete in broadcasting the most seductive programs which destroy chastity and persevere in this so that the noble manners which people might have acquired during the year are destroyed in a very short amount of time. These channels act like a destructive hammer which destroys any trace of morality that people may have in their hearts; channels which are administered by people with no conscience that would have made them distinguish between that which is good and that which is shameless. The effect of these channels is that they eradicate the strong community bonds that exist from their roots regardless of whether we realise this or not. Moreover, some of what these channels are broadcasting may be jeopardising the social stability and security that we currently enjoy.

Something that we must realise is that those who steal people’s minds and command their ideology are no less evil than those who steal money; both types of thieves cause havoc and endanger security and stability.

We should know that it is the media that controls the minds of people and communities; it is through this that people’s ideologies are formed. The media is what should propagate issues that are of concern to the Muslims and support them, or, it could be the cause for facts to be altered or caused to disappear. If anyone wishes to know whether a nation is serious or careless, all they have to do is observe their media and the issues that it regards as important, because this is what will affect its community, both in a positive and negative manner.

Slaves of Allaah! Fear Allaah during your summer vacations and stay far away from the satanic gatherings which lead people to destruction. Allaah says that which translates as: “And do not be like she who untwisted her spun thread after it was strong … ” (An-Nahl: 92).

Second Khutbah:

There are two other important issues which are not any less significant than what has already been mentioned regarding evil practices during vacations, and these are travelling to the lands of the disbelievers and to Muslim countries which are in essence not much different from the disbelieving countries.

It is a well known fact that anybody who is serious and fears their Lord, Who has bestowed His bounties upon him, would never spend anything on that which would result in his destruction. On the other hand, there are others who have gone to ridiculous extremes in their entertainment and have begun to think that they are imprisoned in their homes and countries. They have slighted things which they used to consider as serious and vital, and this has got to the point where these people have become accustomed to vacationing with no apparent consideration of whether this entails seeing shameless things which Allaah has prohibited, such as nudity and other disgusting matters.

Moreover, some committed practicing Muslims who are exposed to this become weaker in performing their obligatory duties, or perform them but accompanied by shame and embarrassment, as if they are stealing something; they may offer their prayers in the midst of loud music, which would destroy their tranquillity and concentration.

Abu Haamid Al-Ghazaali, may Allaah have mercy upon him, mentioned some types of vacationing by saying: "Continuous vacationing and entertainment destroy the heart. Some people wish for nothing except to boast and have a fine reputation, which leads them to resemble the people of great disobedience in the way they talk, their habits, the way they perform some acts of worship and their manners. They think highly of themselves and think they are doing well. How foolish is the one who cannot differentiate between being healthy and a having a wound which is swollen; such people are despised by Allaah, because Allaah hates unutilised youth, and the only thing which led such people to this type of vacationing is unutilised youth".

Ibn Al-Jawzi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "If travelling through the land is not for the purpose of seeking knowledge or propagating Islaam, then it is prohibited."

Imaam Ahmad, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Travelling (for entertainment) is not recommended in Islaam nor was it the practice of the Prophets and the righteous, because it distracts the heart" and when he was asked once about amusement, he, may Allaah have mercy upon him replied: "No, rather, amusement is attained by frequently going to the mosque."

Slaves of Allaah! Fear Allaah regarding your vacations and take a serious stance towards finding the proper way of utilising and preserving your time. In order to realise the importance of this issue, we must know that everybody will have to answer five questions, which were mentioned by the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. Abu Barzah, may Allaah be pleased with him: narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “No person’s feet will be able to move on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked about five things: how he spent his life; how he utilised his youth; how he earned his wealth and how he spent it; and what he did with his knowledge” (Tirmidhi).

First Khutbah

O people! I advise you all and myself to fear Allaah and be pious because that is the source of might, honour and security in this life, and the way to salvation on the Day of Resurrection, as Allaah says that which translates as: “And there is none of you except he will come to it. [i.e., Hell] This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed. Then We will save those who feared Allaah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.” (Maryam: 71-72).

Slaves of Allaah! If one takes a just and unbiased look at the current condition of mankind in general and the Muslims in particular, in an era where technology is at its most advanced and civilization is at its most developed in economic, medical, military and informational terms, they will find that all this worldly knowledge, information and development is inherently deficient and inept because it cannot produce a single human being who realises the reason for his creation.

There is no doubt that this is a fact, otherwise, how can one explain the spread of ignorance and illiteracy in the era of knowledge and technology? Why is there so much poverty at a time of abundant resources? Why is unemployment overwhelming in an era of mass production and manufacturing? Why do some international researchers who specialise in community affairs call this era an era of grief and depression after they called the previous one an era of anxiety?

We do not need many evidences to prove that we are suffering from the spread of this phenomenon, the phenomenon of grief and depression.

Slaves of Allaah! This is the destructive problem of our time and it is the most widespread amongst all the psychological diseases in the world. It is continually on the increase. An accurate International survey affirms that ten percent of the world's population suffers from it, including the Muslim countries, which means that hundreds of millions of people are living through this bitter reality. Moreover, there is proof that this phenomenon is starting at a younger age as time goes by and that it affects twice as many females as males. This has resulted from the fact that women are not practicing their natural role in the community due to them shouldering responsibilities which they were forced to, leading them to leave the role of raising their children to maids and day care centres.

The number of suicides resulting from grief and depression has exceeded eight hundred thousand annually, and this is beside the fact that eighty percent of those who suffer from it do not see doctors in order to report or solve the problem.

This is not a new phenomenon and its causes are not mysterious, rather it is the natural and expected result when people become obsessed by gathering and collecting worldly belongings and when people’s concerns become purely materialistic. Therefore, this problem differs from one country or community to another and is dependent on the weakness of people’s belief in Allaah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, The Last Day and the divine decree. This is in addition to people’s behaviour and the degree of security, justice and love between the people.

This phenomenon has interested scholars of various disciplines, medical doctors, writers and journalists who have studied and addressed this problem. In many cases the articles written have been of little benefit, and as much as people have addressed this problem, no one seems to have approached it correctly. The only correct and acceptable way of curing and solving this problem is if its diagnosis is founded on scientific treatment which is based on authentic laboratory tests and reports conducted by trustworthy specialists who apply the principles of Islaam to all their tests and stay away from the purely materialistic bias which fails to attach any value to the spiritual side of the problem.

Grief is a something natural that humans feel due to their common problems, it is when it increases and overwhelms a person that it becomes what is known as depression. This is a condition that is considered to be at the highest level of grief and results in a person becoming controlled and dominated by their inner misery, the result of which is despair and loss of happiness. It is usually accompanied with headaches, bone problems, ulcers and other symptoms; it also makes a person lose their taste of joy and happiness. The results of depression include laziness, loss of energy and hatred of life which makes some people feel that suicide is the only solution. Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "four things destroy the body: anxiety, grief, hunger and sleeping late."

Applying medical treatment with a religious foundation, extracted from the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam is vital because it is the most perfect and safest form of treatment, especially when one compares this to the hundreds of medications and tranquilizers which have flooded the market and which the human body becomes addicted to, thereby descending into a worse and more serious condition than depression.

Some medical reports state that swimming and frequently doing house work is a solution for depression, but it is ludicrous to imagine that depressed people will always remain in swimming pools or be constantly doing housework. On the other hand, it is accepted that a person can easily be remembering Allaah, glorifying him and seeking His forgiveness at all times, whether he is standing, sitting or lying down. This is how Allaah described the people of understanding when He says that which translates as: “[Those] Who remember Allaah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying]: 'Our Lord! You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire'”. (Aal ‘Imraan: 190-191). Therefore, we can see the importance of spiritual treatment to these problems, although there is no doubt that medication is also necessary, but the point is that we must not ignore the spiritual treatments that exist for these problems.

One may well ask: we realise that these problems exist, but what are the reasons behind them and what is the solution?

The answer is that in some cases, there are purely medical reasons behind depression which cannot be ignored, the most common being the frequent consumption of medication, drugs and alcohol. This leads to a person becoming addicted to them and subsequently feeling that their life is pointless without them. This results in a chemical imbalance within the brain which causes depression. Another reason why depression takes place is due to heredity, when one inherits them through their genes. We shall concentrate on the some of the reasons why depression exists which have been specifically addressed by Islaam and dispraised and warned against it in many verses of the Qur’aan and in various Ahaadeeth.

In many Qur'aanic verses and Ahaadeeth it is mentioned that the heart which is heedless of the remembrance of Allaah, which is reflected by the heedlessness of the tongue is an indication of grief and misery for the person who is afflicted by this. Allaah says that which translates as: “And whoever turns away from My remembrance – Indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” (Taa Haa: 124). Also, it is also mentioned in the Sunnah that sins lead to depression, as stated in the book of Imaam Ahmad, may Allaah have mercy upon him, that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “If a slave’s sins increase and he does not have enough good deeds which would wipe these out, then Allaah will afflict him with grief and sorrow in order to wipe them out”.

Being anxious and concerned about the future and the lack of belief in divine decree and pre-destination is another cause of this problem. Some people worry about what the future holds for them and fear being incapable of dealing with problems, disasters and calamities, if and when they arrive. One finds that such people are in such a frenzy at times of tribulation that if they could find refuge in a cave or other remote and concealed place, they would rush like mad to get to it.

Bad dreams caused by Satan, who instils sorrow in a person, also play an important role the cause of depression. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam informed us that Satan comes to people as they sleep and makes them see things which results in them feeling grief and sorrow. This is why we see many people who suffer from depression not being able to sleep properly.

Other reasons that lead to depression are debts which a person cannot repay, cowardliness at the time of fear and stinginess whilst aggressively collecting wealth.

The Proof that debts cause grief and anxiety lies in the Hadeeth where the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam went into the mosque one day and found Abu Umaamah, may Allaah be pleased with him, and said: “O Abu Umaamah! Why do I see you sitting in the mosque when it is not prayer time?” Abu Umaamah, may Allaah be pleased with him, replied: "It is due to Anxiety and grief, which resulted from debts that I owe." So the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Shall I teach words which will take away your grief and by which Allaah will help you repay your debts, if you were to say them?” Abu Umaamah, may Allaah be pleased with him replied: "Yes! O Messenger of Allaah." Thereupon, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Every morning and every evening say, O Allah! I seek refuge in you from anxiety and grief, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardliness, the burden of debts and from being over powered by men." After this, Abu Umaamah, may Allaah be pleased with him, commented that: "I did this and Allaah relieved my sorrow and anxiety and helped me repay my debts."

These were some reasons behind depression, and through these one can clearly see the connection between depression and straying away from the guidance and the path of Allaah, committing that which Islaam has prohibited, and being attached to worldly matters. Allaah says that which translates as: “So whoever Allaah wants to guide – He expands his breast to [contain] Islaam; and whoever He wants to misguide – He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allaah place defilement upon those who do not believe.” (Al-An’aam: 125).

Second Khutbah

O people! In order to address this topic in a comprehensive manner we must briefly point out some of the best ways of curing this problem, based on the Islamic texts in addition to the testimony of eminent and specialised medical doctors:

· The first and most important is the obligation of the Muslim nation of performing Jihaad for the sake of Allaah, propagating it and inviting people to perform it, and warning against being inclined towards this life and its pleasures. This is the way to a prosperous and tranquil heart, and a means of getting rid of grief and misery. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “When people become stingy, deal with ‘Eenah (a form of Ribaa), follow their cattle and become satisfied with agriculture (i.e., become attached to agriculture and commerce) then Allaah will afflict them with humiliation until they return to their religion”. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also said, “Perform Jihaad because it is one of the gates that lead to Paradise, and a way through which Allaah relieves people from anxiety and grief”.

· The correct understanding and belief in divine decree and pre-destiny is another way to treat this problem. When a person believes that there was no way that he could have escaped whatever befell him and that all matters are in the Hands of Allaah, including ones provisions and death, and that no one will die until he consumes all his decreed provision and until he lives for the whole amount of time that was given to him, then he will definitely rely on Allaah completely without any worry or grief and will face all his problems with strength and resolution. Also, if people acknowledge that whatever Allaah has decreed resulted from His perfect wisdom, then they will be content with whatever He decrees. One who is discontent will become an easy victim for grief, disease and following base desires. Al-Hasan, may Allaah have mercy upon him, was asked how he attained his good manners, he replied: "From being content with the decree of Allaah". Abu Haatim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reported that some of the Salaf said regarding being content: "There is no rank higher or mightier than being content. It is the peak of loving Allaah". This is exactly why Prophet Zakiryaa, peace be upon him, supplicated to Allaah to grant this to his son, as Allaah says that which translates as: “…And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]."(Maryam: 6). Contentment can only be established when the slave has firmly in his mind the conviction that whatever Allaah decrees results from His wisdom. Allaah provides and deprives for a wise reason, and this is the only thing that will make a person feel at ease during times of hardships. This also applies during times of prosperity, as Allaah informs us in the Qur’aan about Prophet Sulaymaan, peace be upon him, with that which translates as: “…'This is from the favour of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful – his gratitude is only for the [benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful – then indeed, my Lord is free of need and Generous.' (An-Naml:40). This is also evident in the saying of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam when his son Ibraaheem died: “The eyes cry tears, and the heart becomes sad, but we will not say that which will bring the wrath of our Lord. If it was not a true promise, and that we will meet in an appointed time, and that the last will eventually follow (die) after the first, then we would have cried hard for your death (O Ibraaheem). Indeed we are saddened by your departure” (Al-Bayhaqi & Ibn Maajah). By saying this, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam meant that had he not known that there was a wisdom from Allaah behind taking his son, he would have extremely been saddened.

· Extra prostration and glorification of Allaah and worship in general takes away grief. Allaah says that which translates as: “…And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say. So exalt [Allaah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him]. And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death].” (Al-Hijr: 97-99). Whenever the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam felt grief or worry, he would rush to prayer. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Whoever continuously asks forgiveness from Allaah, then Allaah will make a way out for him from all his worries, and will provide him from means he never would have expected”.

· The dish of Talbeenah is another relief from grief and anxiety, as narrated by ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Talbeenah relieves a person’s heart from anxiety and some of its grief” (Bukhaari & Muslim). Talbeenah is a natural medicine which is prepared by boiling wheat or barley with either honey or milk, or both of them.

· The final cure is that which the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam advised us with when he said: “Allaah will relieve any slave who is afflicted with grief and anxiety from his anxiety and replace his grief with happiness if he says: 'O Allaah! I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur’aan the life of my heart and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety. O Allaah! Teach me from it that which I am ignorant of and remind me with it that which I was made to forget; I ask You by Your mercy, for You are the Most Merciful, to grant me its recitation during the hours of night and day in the form which pleases You'” . The people asked: "O Prophet of Allaah! Should we learn (i.e., memorize) these words’. He sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam replied: “Yes! Everyone who hears this should memorise it”.

What I have mentioned are some helpful ways of curing the sickness of depression.

On The Imitaion Of The Disbelievers

Khutbah By: Shaykh Su'ood ash-Shuraym
Taken From: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/al-Islam-dk/

Summary

1) A warning against the imitation of disbelievers
2) Forms of imitating the disbelievers
3) An appeal to return to the Qur’aan and Sunnah
4) The positive response of some Muslim women towards invitations by disbelievers to imitate them

First Khutbah

I advise you, as well as myself, to fear Allaah in times of prosperity and misfortune, in secret and in public: "O mankind! Worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous." (Al Baqarah: 21)

O people! When a person meditates upon the histories of past nations and populations, he will be instantly amazed at the revolutions and transformations they went through. For instance, there was a pioneering nation (i.e., the Muslim nation) which led the world for many centuries but then, it faltered and lost its leading role; it fell in the midst of blind imitation and followed the paths of other nations in terms of manners and beliefs. Once it was at the acme of development and reached the highest level of power and glory, but it later fell to the lowest point and was afflicted with misery. It died after it had been living, deteriorated after it was once flourishing and withered after it was blossoming. It was the nation that discovered the sources of knowledge and developed the Islaamic civilization and sciences, which the West later obtained significantly, without having to exert the least of efforts. Thus it seems as if the gates towards progress had been shut off for the Muslims as they turned into artificial consumers of the Western civilization. They even began to adopt certain features of it, which were originally theirs but had been stolen away from them.

O Muslims! When a Muslim blindly imitates the West, he turns into a loyal supporter of their beliefs and customs; he is like one who tries to reform something but spoils it while he is unaware. He is just like a defeated follower, like a baby who bites and severs his mother's breast while it is in his mouth. Such a person does not know that blind copying of the West involves hidden hazards and that our rights, honour and dignity are violated by such imitation and imbecilic pride.

O Muslims! The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "You will imitate the nations before you very closely to the extent that if they went into a lizard's hole, you would enter it as well” his companions, may Allaah be pleased with them, inquired: “(Do you mean) the Jews and Christians, O Messenger of Allaah?” He sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam replied: "Who else?” (Bukhaari & Muslim)

The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam also said: "The Day of Judgment will not come until my Nation closely imitates the nations before them.” It was asked: “Like the Persians and Romans, Messenger of Allaah?” He sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam replied: "Who are the nations (I could mean) except those?” (Bukhaari)

The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam foretold that some of his nation will imitate the People of the Book, namely the Jews and Christians, as well as other non-Arabs, namely the Persians and Romans. Allaah says that which means: "[You disbelievers are] like those before you; they were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their portion [of worldly enjoyment], and you have enjoyed your portion as those before you enjoyed their portion, and you have engaged [in vanities] like that in which they engaged…" (At-Tawbah: 69)

Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, commented on this verse by saying: “These are the Children of Israel that we will imitate.” Ibn Mas’ood, may Allaah be pleased with him, also said in this regard: “You are closely similar to the Children of Israel as far as outside appearance and manners are concerned, but I do not know whether you will worship the calf (as they did) or not.”

O servants of Allaah! The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam used to prohibit imitating other nations. It is worth mentioning that these traditions do not indicate that the entire Muslim nation will commit this sin as he sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam also foretold that a group of his nation will continue to stick to the Straight Path until the Day of Judgment.

The Muslims constitute the most guided and well-mannered nation in this life; and on the Day of Judgment Allaah will make them witnesses over all other nations as He says that which means: "And thus We have made you a median [i.e., just] community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you…" (Al-Baqarah: 143)

Indeed, this is a very prestigious position. How is it, then, that Muslims imitate others in their customs, traditions and feasts? The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam even forbade the Muslims from acquiring religious information from the People of the Book; once, ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab, may Allaah be pleased with him, was reading some parts of one of the scriptures of the People of the Book to the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, so he got angry and said: "I have conveyed to you a clear religion. Do not ask them (the People of the Book) about anything, for they may tell you the truth while you believe them or they may lie and you might believe them. I swear by Him in Whose Hands is my soul, if Moosaa was alive, he would not have any choice but to follow me.” (Ahmad & Ibn Abi Shaybah)

Allaah made human beings and all other creatures accustomed to interacting with their similar counterparts. When the degree of similarity increases, such interaction and hence imitation in morals and characteristics becomes more complete, until it is hardly possible to distinguish between them. Accordingly, human beings are affected by each other and acquire each other's traits through cohabitation and imitation. It is also known that if a human being stays in the company of a certain type of animal, he would pick up some of its features; that is why, for example, those who tend camels are known for their pride and arrogance, while shepherds are known to be humble and calm, whereas those who raise both camels and mules acquire some of the bad attributes of both. Similarly, a domestic animal acquires some human characteristics, such as the ability to live with others.

Furthermore, when a person puts on the clothes usually worn by scholars, he may feel himself as somehow closer to them, because similarity and imitation in outward appearance leads to resemblance in inward characteristics such as personal characteristics and morals, as is witnessed in reality and is confirmed by Islaamic jurisprudence and common sense. In the old times, it was said: ‘Birds of a feather flock together’; this is a realistic proverb which conforms to the manner in which Allaah has formed His creation. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam spoke the truth when he said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." (Ahmad & Abu Dawood)

Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy on him, said: “We have seen that the degree of polytheism is less in those Jews and Christians who reside with Muslims, and that the degree of faith in the Muslims who have dealt extensively with the Jews and Christians is lesser than that of the pious Muslims.”

O servants of Allaah! Imitating polytheists and atheists in their clothing, customs, rules, politics and economics has become widespread among many Muslims to a very large extent, so much so that the one who blindly imitates and tries to Westernize might even be respected by the foolish masses and the youth, including the rich, intellectuals and even the poor, who are attracted to such a person. Woe to imitation and subordination! What weighty and oppressive constraints they have! What a dark path theirs is! What a great loss for whoever follows them!

Yes, woe to imitating and following the West! It has trapped some Muslim generations in the dark, narrow prisons of subordination and dependence, and prevented them from thinking, meditating and heading for glory. It has blocked the means to the real happiness of their souls.

Woe to imitation and dependence! They are obstacles for the intellects and prevent everything that may revive them.

The Muslim Nation should lead, not be led; others should depend on us and not the reverse. Our Nation should not be deceived by the artificial adornments possessed by some devastated people, as Allaah says that which means: "And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting." (Taa-Haa: 131)

The Western civilization is like a mirage, which, when seen from a distance is like a large sea, but it is as Allaah says which means: "But the disbelievers – their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allaah before him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allaah is swift in account." (An-Noor: 39)

The weak and ignorant Muslims, who try to remodel the principles of our nation through imitation, should know that even though such temporal morals may ruin some of the deeply rooted ones, they will never remain or become innate. If some people believe that our nation must change its ways for development, then let it be known that our resorting to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is the best means for change. Allaah says that which means: "…Indeed, Allaah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allaah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron." (Ar-Ra`d: 11)

If we embrace the means to be powerful, stick to deep-rooted principles such as strong will, piety, courage and Islaamic zeal and adhere to our distinctive code of life which indicates that we are religious and ethical people, what harm would we get from it? Are these not the true Islaamic morals? Are there any other solid foundations for progress besides them? Allaah says that which means: "[And say, ‘Ours is] the religion of Allaah. And who is better than Allaah in [ordaining] religion? And we are worshippers of Him’” (Al-Baqarah: 138) and also: "[Say], ‘Then is it other than Allaah I should seek as judge while it is He who has revealed to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’aan] explained in detail?’…" (Al-An’aam: 114)

However, if we are to adopt foreign customs and traditions alien to our religion, from the West, we should remember that Islaam is Islaam and polytheism is polytheism, and that they live in one hemisphere and we live in another. We were the masters before we assumed these Western traditions that ruined the free Muslim nation – its men and especially its women, who have rushed after the unknown in a breathless attempt to imitate the West. They are amazed by the eye-catching products of its industries and have followed its disgraceful women to the extent that their clothes became almost the same as those of Western models. When you see any Muslim woman wearing a dress barely covering her private parts, you should know that this is an example of their kind of clothing. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said about such women: "I have seen none lacking in common sense and failing in religion and (at the same time) robbing the wisdom of wise men, besides you (women).” (Bukhaari & Muslim)

This is why when Allaah says that which means: "…and amended for him [i.e., Zakariyya] his wife…” (Al-Anbiyaa’: 90) it denotes that He thereby bestowed much grace upon Zakariyya, peace be upon him: He also says which means, "…So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allaah would have them guard…" (An-Nisaa’: 34)

O Muslims! The restrictions imposed by our religion on the human being are not meant to torture or deprive him from the pleasures of this life. Rather, their aim is to elevate him from mere animalism to complete humanity. Thus, a Muslim will become capable of overcoming subservience and dependence, and his faith and piety will overpower animalistic lusts.

Whenever a society ignores such restrictions or belittles them, it jeopardizes and opens itself to serious problems and positions itself on the brink of destruction, as Allaah says that which means: "…And whoever transgresses the limits of Allaah – it is those who are the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust]” (Al-Baqarah: 229) and also: "…And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allaah? Indeed, Allaah does not guide the wrongdoing people." (Al-Qasas: 50)

Second Khutbah

Our Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam prohibited whatever acts lead to the imitation of the polytheists to such an extent that one of the Jews said about him: "This man does not wish to set aside any of our affairs until he acts in nonconformity with it." (Muslim)

It is also reported that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam forbade Muslims from offering prayers after dawn until the sun rises and following the afternoon prayer until sunset. He explained that the sun rises and sets between the horns of the devil and at this time, the polytheists prostrate before it. It is well-known that a believer never prostrates himself to anything except Allaah; most people may not even be aware that the sun rises and sets between the horns of the devil and that the polytheists prostrate before it, yet, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam commanded Muslims not to pray at this time so as not to imitate the polytheists in any way.

Imitating the People of the Book and the non-Arab polytheists will surely lead to some degree of affection towards them. For this reason also, imitation is prohibited in order to block the way before such love transpires and to prevent allegiance to them; this is aside from the legal evidences that prohibit such imitation.

It is plainly evident that some people who copy the polytheists in their clothes, manners, traditions or speak their language, harbour love and admiration for them. In this way, the polytheists succeed in disseminating ideas such as globalization and a universal religion which affect some sick-hearted Muslims; all of these aim at weakening the Muslim character and identity. Whenever a person objects to such ideas, he is labelled as an introvert, an isolationist and even a narrow-minded person alienated from this world and who should have died in his cradle.

Such people seem to ask why the bells of churches do not chime along with the minarets reverberating "Allaah is the Greatest." They ask why there are not many religions being practiced in the Arabian Peninsula, but they forget or seem to forget that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: "There must not be two religions in the Arabian Peninsula.” (Maalik & Ahmad)

Allaah says that which means: “And never will the Jews and the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say: ‘Indeed, the guidance of Allaah is the [only] guidance.’ If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allaah no protector or helper.” (Al-Baqarah: 120)

He also says that which means: "They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike…” (An-Nisaa’: 89)

I hope that Muslims will heed this post. It is sad that we make so many excuses for imitating the kuffar and straying away from the Sunnah. Masha Allah for this post. It is a great reminder.

Islaamic Economy

Sheikh Saud ibn Ibrahim ash Shuraim, Imam and Khateeb of Makkah

26, Rabee‘uth-Thaanee 1426 (3, June 2005)

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as He should be feared and be conscious of Him in private and public. Be dutiful to Him and follow up an evil deed with a good one it will erase it. Deal with people kindly. Allaah says,

“Verily, he who fears Allaah with obedience to Him (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds, and by performing righteous good deeds), and is patient, then surely, Allaah makes not the reward of the good-doers to be lost.”

(Yoosuf 12:90)

Dear brethren! Money is the blood vessel of material development in the life in this world, as Islaamic injunctions are the artery of spiritual and moral development. Naturally, money overwhelmingly dominates human mind. If the materially-overwhelmed mind is not controlled by injunctions of Allaah and contentedness, it can lead man into a state of poisonous madness and reprehensible avarice.

No wonder, man’s love for money moves around in his body as blood moves around in veins. This has to be so because Allaah says,

“And verily, he is violent in the love of wealth.”

(Al-‘Aadiyaat 100:8)

And He says about a group of humans,

“And you love wealth with much love.”

(Al-Fajr 89:20)

It is in the light of this that people compete and vie with one another to accumulate this wealth and get as much as they can of this tempting material. However, legality or otherwise of this competition and its meritoriousness or blameworthiness depend upon one’s sincerity or otherwise in searching for it. This is what Allaah refers to when He says, “

“O man! Verily, you are returning towards your Lord with your deeds and actions (good or bad), a sure returning, so you will meet (the results of your deeds which you did).”

(Al-Inshiqaaq 84:6)

Money is a two-edged weapon. It is for the people of Islaam, Eemaan and good intention a blessing for which they praise Allaah at all times. This is the sign of the best nation. Allaah says,

Those who spend their wealth (in Allaah’s Cause) by night and day, in secret and in public, they shall have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.”

(Al-Baqarah 2:274)

Money is loss and calamity for the disbelievers however much its sources and however abundant it is. This is because they fail to spend it in proper ways, so that it can be a source of sorrow and curse for them. Allaah says,

“And let not the disbelievers think that Our postponing of their punishment is good for them. We postpone the punishment only so that they may increase in sinfulness. And for them is a disgracing torment.”

(Aal ‘Imraan 3:178)
This has to be so because those who disbelieve in Allaah and His Messenger derives their wealth mostly from sources that Allaah and His Messenger forbid like usury, eating up people’s wealth wrongfully and hindering people from the way of Allaah. This act of theirs will cause them real agony and regret when regret will be of no avail, for there is no sin greater than disbelief. Allaah says,

“Verily, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to hinder (men) from the Path of Allaah, and so will they continue to spend it; but in the end it will become an anguish for them. Then they will be overcome. And those who disbelieve will be gathered unto Hell.”

(Al-Anfaal 8:36)

It is in order to underline the importance of money in the life of individuals and communities that it is mentioned in the Qur’aan commendably or condemningly in more than eighty places.

Fellow Muslims! The law of Islaam encourages construction of the earth and developing it economically so that it can help people to worship Allaah as it is due therein. The Messenger of Allaah said, “When the final Hour comes and one of you is holding a palm shoot and he is able to plant it, he should do so, for he will earn a reward for that.” (Al-Bukhaaree in al-Adab al-Mufrad)

It is in the light of this that Islaam is very keen in providing guarantees and pillars to ensure permanent and solid economical development. A prominent pillar in this regard is independence of the Muslim society in terms of their economy and development, so that it can be the leader not a follower. Economical independence naturally means lack of economical dependence on a foreign country. It also means Muslims’ control of their own economical potentialities with no foreign meddling. Losing economical authority means losing political, military, social and cultural authority. Therefore, economical development of the Muslim society cannot be achieved if there is no economical independence and development from within.

Dear brethren! These days, the Muslim Ummah is suffering from economical anarchy and weak development. It is also suffering from economic corruption that infiltrates into its societies through individuals and organizations. The proliferation of these infiltration outlets is enough to cause commotion that can lead to political and social instability, devastating recession in the money market, lack of development and a seriously weak economy for the Muslims.

Many recent studies confirm that there are connections between economic corruption and development. Had the Muslim followed the real meaning of Islaamic economic system they would not have deviated from the right path of development and they would not have lived an anarchic life falling over one another on what is called bourses market and stock exchange that are not controlled by Islaamic injunctions. Also, there would not have been chaos and many societies would not have been burdened with choking debts accumulated from loans initially taken to purchase unnecessary things.
Islaamic economic system on its part does not recognise that economic productivity should be developed in isolation from proper distribution of wealth. Also, goals of Islaamic economy should be made clear and efforts should be carefully exerted to see that problems of individual Muslims like illiteracy, unemployment and accommodation and health sufferings are adequately addressed.

If people had reflected over the concept of Islaamic economy, they would not have found themselves in the abyss of this chaos, because the word for economy in Islaam is ‘iqtisaad’ which is derived from root word ‘qasd’; and ‘qasd’ in Arabic language means uprightness, justice and balance in word and deed, in imports and exports and in earnings and spending. The Islaamic economic system therefore seeks to maintain balance in development and justness in money market. It seeks to bring the Muslim society to justice and balance with neither exaggeration nor negligence.

It is in the light of the above that it becomes mandatory on the Muslims to exert all efforts to islaamize their economy and development by drawing from a single source of economic legislation which is the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger. The correct Islaamic belief and the authentic source of legislation are enough to guarantee ownership for individuals and nations.

This proposal may cause some simpletons to raise eyebrows because of their wrong perception that economy should only be controlled by mathematical regulations and criteria only. The reason for this is that thoughts and actions of these people are guided by individualism and selfishness. It is this selfishness that caused foreign economic systems to swing between communism and capitalism, and this is clear evidence that belief has a great influence on economic development.

Dear brethren! The real progress in the study of Islaamic economy can only come through adhering to Islaamic teachings, keeping it in the form in which Allaah wants it and not to change or alter it in the garb of man-made law.

Islaam sees that economic activity regarding exercising right of ownership should be subjected to Allaah’s injunctions. Allaah says,

“O you who believe! Be afraid of Allaah and give up what remains (due to you) from Ribâ (usury) (from now onward), if you are (really) believers. And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allaah and His Messenger but if you repent, you shall have your capital sums. Deal not unjustly (by asking more than your capital sums), and you shall not be dealt with unjustly (by receiving less than your capital sums).”

(Al-Baqarah 2:278-279)
Not only that, there is abundance evidence that the Muslims’ degeneration, weakness, ignominy and their subjugation by their enemy are caused by their violations of Islaamic law in business transactions. The Messenger of Allaah addressed his followers saying, “When you become stingy with dinar and dirham [i.e, you hold back from spending them in righteous ways], and you deal in ‘eenah’ and you become obsessed with cattle rearing thereby abandoning struggling in the way of Allaah, Allaah will impose ignominy on you and He will not remove it until you go back to [the correct teachings of] your religion.” (Ahmad)

Dear Muslims! To attain the aspired progress, Islaamic economy needs a serious participation from sincere scholars and Muslim economists who can draw the outlines of the real and correct Islaamic economy. Understanding of the situation and its social form should be given adequate consideration. Studies should be based on induction and invention methods with the aim of identifying the problems facing the Islaamic economy and the reasons why it lags behind. To actualize this, we need to look into the Prophetic methodology as a basic way of achieving guidance in the light of Allaah’s injunction:

Allaah has permitted trading and forbidden Ribâ (usury).”

(Al-Baqarah 2:275)

And His injunction:

“O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allaah is Most Merciful to you.”

(An-Nisaa 4:29)

Fellow Muslims! Know that the economic problems that face the Muslim world resulted from absence of the correct Islaamic way that caters for the general economic well-being with resolution, cooperation and perfection and through which interests of the Ummah can be attained and harm be averted.

The contemporary applications in Muslim financial institutions, especially in the area of banking and insurance, and the positive impact of supporting them need to be appreciated by the Muslim societies, governments and regulating authorities.

If we want to develop a correct economic activity, there are two important elements that we must not ignore: Zakaah and Waqf [trust fund]. It is through these two elements that we can have a guarantee of an unlimited support in achieving the economic and social security for the Ummah.

Not only that, we need to perfectly understand how to deal with globalization scourge that has now become a reality that imposes itself on the entire world.
Therefore, the importance of having a constructive economic cooperation among Muslim countries cannot be overemphasised. There should be an increase in trade exchange among them. They should have a common Islaamic market that can compete with world markets. The future of the Muslim societies should be planned from their own lands and with their own efforts and conducts so that they would not become a prey to economic and ideological beggary. For, any nation whose future is based upon that kind of beggary is a lost nation that can never rise or progress. Allaah says,

“He it is Who has made the earth subservient to you (i.e. easy for you to walk, to live and to do agriculture on it); so walk in the path thereof and eat of His provision. And to Him will be the Resurrection.”

(Al-Mulk 67:15)

The Trial Of Money

By: Shaykh Soud as-Shuraim
Source: Taken from a Khutbah delivered in Masjid al-Haram, Makkah on 17, Sha'baan 1425 (1st October, 2004)

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as He should be feared and be conscious of Him in private and public. Be prepared for the Day of Resurrection, for the Hour will definitely come and Allaah will resurrect the inhabitants of the graves.

Dear Muslims! Competition to attain the possessions of this world is the habit of people in the past and present. This competition, along with avarice, increases the more people rush after the beauties and temptations of this world so much so that some adventurous people crave after mere mirage. This is because; most people are infatuated by the adornments of this world, on the top of which is money. Allaah endowed mankind with this money so that it could change hands among people through commercial dealings. The people have been so much preoccupied with transactions that it has become the only thing in which they gamble, as if there are running away frantically from poverty. This has made them fall in what the Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) warned against when he said, "By Allaah, it is not poverty that I am not afraid for you. I am rather afraid that Allaah might open for you the treasures of this world if it has been done for those who were before you, and you might compete over it as did those who were before you, and get destroyed as those who were before you." (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

However, this hot competition is not free from injustices, slander, trickery, jealousy and eating up people's wealth wrongfully. If any competition is devoid of moderation and justness, it will have horrible consequences. It is here that crisis surfaced when people commit aggression against one another and curse one another. This consequence is a confirmation of the Prophet's (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) sayings, "Every nation has a trial and the trial of this Ummah is money." (At-Tirmidhee)

Fellow Muslims! Hating poverty and loving wealth is natural for human. And the law of Islaam does not seek to go against the course of nature upon which Allaah created mankind. At the same time, it seeks to make people follow the path of moderation in all this, including in matters relating to money. The Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of wealth and poverty.

Never has Islaam encouraged poverty, because poverty can almost lead to disbelief. Neither has Islaam encouraged people to run blindly after money, because man might become oppressive if he sees himself wealthy.

Dear brethren! The Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has mentioned the Hour would not come until there would be a lot of money. One of the things that we witness today is surplus of money and proliferation of its sources that people are now falling down upon one another because of it as butterflies fall down upon one another over the light. There is hardly a home that is not affected with this crave for money.

This should not be surprising. The Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has informed us about this competition. What is surprising is the way the investors impetuously look for money and how they have shunned deliberateness and clarity in business transaction where they do not care to distinguish between what Allaah allows and what He forbids. The goal of all is only to acquire this money without giving regard to Islaamic regulations.

This disgraceful phenomenon did not come out of nowhere. It is a result of lack of knowledge and a weak desire to earn a living from lawful means. What we see today of many investment offers are full of ambiguities and unlawful methods reminds us of the saying of the Prophet (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), "A time will come when man will no longer care whether is source of income is lawful or unlawful." (Ahmad)

Brethren in faith! The huge investment revolution among the investors has caused a lot ill-feeling, rancour and accusations. This is in addition to accumulated losses that have been the bane of many businesses, leading to dissensions and calamities. All this makes is incumbent upon us to put the things aright and explain some matters clearly through the following words of advice:

One: The affairs of humans and their properties are built upon negotiations and mutual agreement. The investors are generally ignorant when the deal with the person with whom they want to invest their money, as long as they are assured of profit. They do not bother to ask him of any small or big matter. They rather praise him and are proud of him. When the transaction then fails they quickly turn to vilify him and claim that he had duped them. They are, in the real sense, his allies when the business booms and his enemies when the business slumps.

Two: The basic rule concerning people's money and rights is that they are inviolable. It is unlawful to commit aggression against other people's properties or to unnecessarily delay them or to be negligent regarding them or to make to dispose of them under false excuses. The Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, "The blood, property, and honour of a Muslim are inviolable for all Muslims."

He (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) also said in another Hadeeth narrated by (Muslim), "Under what justification will you take the property of your brother unlawfully?”

Three: Contentedness and magnanimity in commercial dealings are highly recommended, for they bring blessing. On the other hand, avarice and lack of contentedness remove the blessing. This is because; commerce is like alcohol which someone drinks until he becomes addicted to it. If he has become addicted to it, the state of being drunk and otherwise will be the same. The Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, "Whoever takes money rightfully it be blessed for him; and whoever takes unlawfully, he is like someone who eats and is not satiates." (Muslim)

Magnanimity and contentedness lead to blessing and mercy. The Prophet (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, "May Allaah have mercy on a person who is magnanimous when he sells and when he buys and when he asks for his right." (Al-Bukhaaree)

Four: Certain misconceptions have to be corrected. Some traders believe that forbidden transactions are only forbidden because of their being usurious and that any transaction that is free of usury is lawful. This assumption is very wrong. The forbidden transactions are rather more than that. This is because; the reality of business transactions is based upon three principles:

1) The one regarding usury in all its forms
2) The one regarding risk and its types
3) The one regarding deception in business and its forms

Very few are the traders or investors who are aware of this because the transaction can become unlawful if one of the conditions for its validity is missing, even if it is not usurious.

The blessings are therefore found only in lawful earnings, and the removal of blessing is only from unlawful earning.

Five: We are directing this advice to those whom people entrusted with their money. We advise them to fear Allaah and use the money in lawful ways. Let them keep away from all ambiguous dealings or acts of negligence. They should not exploit peoples trust in them and use the money for other purposes. For, whoever has an intention to fulfil people's rights, Allaah will be with him. Let these people remember the saying of the Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), "Whoever takes people's money with the intention of fulfilling what in incumbent upon them in it, Allaah will help him to do so; and whoever takes people's money with the intention to ruin it, Allaah will destroy him." (Al-Bukhaaree)

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah and beware of money, for the trial of this Ummah is in money. Listen to Allaah's instruction that goes thus,

"O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allaah is Most Merciful to you." (An-Nisaa 4:29)

Brethren in faith! The law of Islaam came to affirm previous divine laws in preserving the fives necessities: the religion, the life, the mind, the lineage and the property. Buying and selling fall under the necessity of preserving property. In view of this, Islaam did not give a Muslim the freedom to do with the property the way he likes without any regulations. This is to avoid the money being used in ways other than purposes for which Allaah gave it to mankind, so that it will not to a curse on the Day of Resurrection. The Messenger of Allaah (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said in a Hadeeth reported by (At-Tirmidhee), "The feet of man will not slip on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked of four things", and he mentioned among them, "and about his wealth as to how he got it and on what he spent it.”

It therefore, becomes incumbent on the Muslim to understand the reality of this money that it is a double-edged weapon. Let him be careful lest it turns to a curse and a woe on him, for Allaah says about money,

"And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial and that surely with Allaah is a mighty reward." (Al-Anfal 8:28)

It is an obligation of those who are in authority, the scholars and the experts in monetary dealings to play a tangible role in preserving this necessity by laying down regulations that will prevent the money from being misappropriated by the mischievous; and in order to reduce the victims of irresponsible dealers and to safeguard the financial market from being turned into a free pasture for all. Allaah says,

“Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children. (It is) as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers - evil-doers), and (there is) Forgiveness from Allaah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the believers - good-doers). And the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment." (Al-Hadeed 57:20)

Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakaatuh,

The Concept of Submission
Shaykh Sa'ud As Shuraim
April 18, 2008 - Rabee ath Thaani 12, 1429

All praise be to Allah who has revealed the Book to His servant and has not placed therein any crookedness so as to warn of a severe chastisement from Him. And give glad tidings to the righteous believers who do good deeds that they shall have a good reward. [Surah Kahf: Ayaah 1-3] I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, the One True God who has no partner in worship. It is Allah who has honored the children of Adam, carried them on land and sea, provided them with good and pure things, and elevated them above many of His creatures. I bear witness that Muhammad is Allah's servant and messenger and the best human being. He left us on the right path and only evil people deviate from this path. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, companions, and those who follow him until the Day of Judgment.

Fellow Muslims, fear Allah and know that He watches over you wherever you are. Surely, nothing in the earth or in the heavens in hidden from Allah. It is He who shaped you in the wombs of your mothers as He pleases. There is no God but Him, the Almighty, the All Wise.

Oh servants of Allah, it is Allah who created the heavens, the earth, and all that they contain by His wisdom, knowledge, and justice. It is Allah who provides the universe with human beings, jinn, animals, plants, and even inanimate objects. Allah created a universe and all things therein for one purpose only, which is to worship Him alone. It is the duty of all creation to accept the existence of Allah and to acknowledge His Sovereignty. Worshiping Allah alone means to submit to Him, to be obedient to Him, and also to follow the straight path so that His religion is established and His laws are obliged. It is the sole duty of mankind to establish the religion of Allah on earth, and this can be achieved through uttering belief in the Oneness of Allah and putting this belief into practice. Human beings can only achieve total submission to Allah if they have within themselves humility and love for Him. Submission is the core and essence of the religion. Indeed religion in Allah's sight means submission to Him alone. Allah says "Truly, the religion with Allâh is Islâm..." [Surah Ale 'Imraan: Ayah 19] Allah also says "And whoever seeks a religion other than Islâm, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers." [Surah Ale 'Imraan: Ayah 85] Submission is the purpose of creation for Allah says "And I (Allâh) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone)." [Surah Dhariyaat: Ayah 56] Allah also says "Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us?" [Surah Muminuun: Ayah 115]

Fellow Muslims, Allah says "Do they not look in the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all things that Allâh has created..." [Surah 'Araaf: Ayah 185] Allah also criticizes a certain group of people who do not meditate on His creation of the universe. Allah says to such people "And how many a sign in the heavens and the earth they pass by, while they are averse therefrom, And most of them believe not in Allâh except that they attribute partners unto Him." [Surah Yusuf: Ayah 105-106]

Oh fellow Muslims, do you not see the sky and the stars it contains and other celestial bodies Allah created just for the sake of man? Do you not see the earth, and the land, gardens, mountains, and seas it contains? After all these bounties, humans wrongfully ascribe deities to Allah and associate others with Him in worship. Glory be to Allah, the Creator of all. It is amazing that humans are given bounties and blessings and then they are ungrateful to Allah. You have been given all that you have asked of Allah. Allah says "And He gave you of all that you asked for, and if you count the Blessings of Allâh, never will you be able to count them. Verily! man is indeed an extreme wrong-doer.." [Surah Ibraheem: Ayah 34] Man was indeed unjust and ignorant. Woe to man! How ungrateful indeed. Man is ever so miserly. Man is exceedingly contentious. Nay, but man transgresses, considering himself as self-sufficient. Man asks when is the Day of Resurrection. Man is in great loss.

Allah also subjected to you all that is in the heavens and the earth. All is from Him. The angels praise their Lord and seek forgiveness for those on earth. Surely, He is the most Forgiving, most Merciful. Even though Allah the Almighty created everything for mankind, many turn away from him. People busy themselves with the affairs of this world and ignore the hereafter. People are busy with things which will inevitably end, while the hereafter lasts for eternity. Man prefers worldly pleasures and his desires over what Allah the Almighty has enjoined on him. This is so, despite the fact that Allah honored mankind and preferred him over all creation. Allah the Almighty bestowed upon mankind all kinds of blessings, whether hidden or apparent. He the Almighty created a physical beauty and wonder of the human body. After all these blessings, man becomes arrogant and is ignorant of Allah and transgresses against Him. Man is also ungrateful to Allah the Almighty and that is why Allah describes mankind as wrongdoers and ungrateful creatures. Mankind has been blessed with all these bounties from Allah and should be grateful to Him instead of disobeying Him.

When we look at this world and see Allah's creation, we that man is honored and given priority over all creation as Allah chose mankind to be His representative on earth. Allah made this universe subservient to mankind, to provide him with his needs and trusted mankind to worship Allah and look after the world by enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong. Allah even made some angels subservient to mankind. Some record man's deeds, while others protect people. Some angels are entrusted to regulate the wind. One of the most important tasks angels are entrusted with is to seek forgiveness with Allah for the sins of mankind. Indeed all creation except for mankind submits to Allah and is totally obedient to Allah the Almighty. Another exception is the devils from amongst the jinn and mankind as well as certain types of animals. The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) has said "Kill a certain of lizard because it used to blow on the fire in which the Prophet Ibraheem (Alayhi Salaam) was put." [Ahmad]

Even if the creation is disobedient to Allah, it never reaches the degree to which mankind is disobedient. The peak of disobedience to Allah the Almighty were the words of Fir'awn when he said "I am your Lord, so worship me." Another group of people say that the Prophet 'Isa (Alayhi Salaam) is the son of Allah, while others believe in the Trinity. Other human beings say that they can give and take life. The people of the Prophet Musa (Alayhi Salaam) asked him to make them a god like the people had. Other people say that the Quran is made of human words and some say it is just stories of the past. Other says that Allah's hand is restricted. Some say that the angels who are Allah's servants are Allah's daughters. So what about those who say Allah is poor while we are rich? The matter worsens when some people say that Islaamic law is not suitable for all times and places. There are also some secularists who say that religion and the state should be separated while others say that religion is for Allah and politics is for humans to deal with. Some people describe the religion as backward and the Islaamic punishment as barbaric and that Islaam wrongs women. Other people feel that freedom of a woman lies in removing the hijaab and living an indecent lifestyle and disobeying Allah's laws. Such people want women to be means of seduction and a cheap commodity. They also want to see micheif spread in the Muslim communities. These are the attitudes of some people.

Let us take a look at the attitude of Shaytaan. Did Shaytaan say anything like what was mentioned? All he did was promise Allah that he would seduce and trap human beings and invite them to evil. He promised Allah that he would misguide and take them to Hell with him. Shaytaan's big mistake was that he preferred his race over the human race. Allah the Almighty called Shaytaan to prostrate to Adam (Alayhi Salaam), but he refused, and became arrogant and disobeyed Allah. He also misguided some people by whispering to them that he knew what they do not know. He also told them that he fears Allah because he is severely in punishment.

How disobedient and arrogant man is. Allah says "...Can they expect anything but the way of the previous nations? So no change will you find in Allâh's Sunnah (way of dealing), and no turning off will you find in Allâh's Sunnah (way of dealing)." [Surah Fatir: Ayah 43] Allah stresses the fact that are some people are disobedient to Him and they turn away from Him and dislike to submit to His will, even though He created them and bestowed all kinds of blessings on them. In this regard Allah the Almighty says "See you not that whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and Ad-Dawâb moving (living creatures, beasts), and many of mankind prostrate themselves to Allah? But there are many (men) on whom the punishment is justified. And whomsoever Allâh disgraces, none can honour him. Verily! Allâh does what He wills." [Surah Hajj: Ayah 18] This verse shows that many people are disobedient to Allah the Almighty and are arrogant. Allah says "And if you obey most of those on the earth, they will mislead you far away from Allâh's Path..." [Surah An'aam: Ayah 116]

Fellow Muslims, we should achieve one purpose in this life which is to feel the worship of Allah, to submit ourselves totally to Him. We should also acknowledge that some of us are negligent and disobedient to Allah the Almighty. Moreover, we should confess that we may admire ourselves, that we may do a small good deed and we may become proud of this in front of our community and we might try to show off. Mankind tries to convince himself that he is righteous and he also tries to prove this to his society. He thinks that he does not need anyone to correct or advise him. He feels he is doing his duty by performing prayer and so on. In this manner he becomes conceited. We should know all this and we should belittle our righteousness even it seems to be good so that we can be humble.

Indeed, even if our worship reaches a great degree, there is a large difference between our worship of Allah and the submission of other creations like the angels, animals, and inanimate objects which perfectly submit to Allah the Almighty. There are some examples to show the huge difference between us and other creations. One example is of the hoopoe bird of Prophet Sulaimaan (Alayhi Salaam). Allah the Almighty implanted in the bird the creed of the Oneness and the ability to criticize others who associate partners in worship to Him. When the hoopoe bird hovered over the people of the Queen Sheba, it found that the people there were prostrating to the sun. It then rejected this practice and knew this was wrong because it contradicted the principle of the Oneness of Allah. For this reason the hoopoe went to the Prophet Sulaimaan (Alayhi Salaam) and reported everything to him. It acknowledged the Oneness of Allah and Allah says about this "I found her and her people worshiping the sun instead of Allâh, and Shaytaan has made their deeds fair-seeming to them, and has barred them from (Allâh's) Way, so they have no guidance, so they do not worship (prostrate themselves before) Allâh, Who brings to light what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and knows what you conceal and what you reveal, none has the right to be worshiped but He, the Lord of the Supreme Throne!" [Surah Naml: Ayaah 24-26]

We find some examples in some inanimate objects. Allah implanted in some objects anger when His laws are breeched. The Prophet of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was sitting with his companions (Radiallahu Anhum) and a funeral passed by and he (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said "The deceased may be one of two; it may be that he is comforted and finds relief or it may be that the people find relief when he dies because of the evil he used to commit." The companions asked "Who is the one who is comforted and who is the one whom people will be relieved when he dies?" The Prophet of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) replied "When the believer dies he will be comforted because he will receive Allah's mercy, while when the evil person dies the people as well as the animals and plants will be relieved of him." [Saheeh Bukhari]

Fellow Muslims, take note of how trees, plants, and animals are harmed by the evil of evildoers and what they do in the earth, how they spread mischief and corruption. Indeed when human beings commit evil this does not only effect the other people, it also effects nature at large. Even animals feel joy and happiness when they see the children of Adam obeying Allah and doing righteous deeds. They are happy and ask Allah to forgive the people. They also ask Allah to bestow His blessing on them. Listen to the narration of the Prophet (Salallahi Alayhi Wasallam) where he says "Allah's angels, the ants in its nests, even the whale in the depths of the sea ask Allah to send his blessing on the one who teaches people all that is good and beneficial." [Tirmidhi]

Indeed animals and all creatures fear the day of Judgment. They are afraid of events yet to take place on that day. The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said "Every creature will be watchful on Fridays because they are expecting the establishment of the day of Judgment." [Ahmad] It was also narrated in the hadeeth that the rooster holds itself in submission to Allah. The rooster invites to success and all that is good. The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said "Do not insult the rooster because it calls people to go to prayer." [Ahmad and Abu Dawud] The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) also said, "Every Arabian horse will be allowed to supplicate to Allah every dawn for its owner. It will say Oh Allah, bless me for this owner and make me one of his best property." [Ahmad] The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said that Allah will accept the supplication of this horse.

Even the ants constitutes a great nation that glorifies Allah and remembers Him even though they are so small. About ants Allah says "Till, when they came to the valley of the ants, one of the ants said: "O ants! Enter your dwellings, lest Sulaimân and his hosts should crush you, while they perceive not." [Surah Naml: Ayah 18] The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said "There was an ant that bit a prophet, then this prophet ordered that the whole nest be burned. Allah then revealed to him Why do you burn great entire nation who glorifies Allah?" [Saheeh Bukhari] Listen to what Allah says about the trees, "And the herbs (or stars) and the trees both prostrate themselves." [Surah Rahmaan: Ayah 6] The Prophet (Salallahu ALayhi Wasallam) said "When a person who performs Hajj or 'Umrah does talbiya everything in the universe on his left and right including trees, stones, and rock will make talbiya along with him." The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) also said that near the day of Judgment there will be a great war between the Muslims and disbelievers, and even the trees and stones will express their anger, and speak out to the Muslims saying there is a disbeliever behind me.

Look at the creation we have talked about today and then think about the mountains. Think about how the mountains glorify Allah and submit themselves to Him. The mountains fear Allah and fall down in awe of Him when others associate partners with Him in worship. Allah says "Whereby the heavens are almost torn, and the earth is split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins, That they ascribe a son to the Most Gracious. But it is not suitable for the Most Gracious that He should beget a son." [Surah Maryam: Ayaah 90-92] Mountains felt awe when ordered to establish the trust of Allah's religion on earth! Also remember the mountains on which Musa (Alayhi Salaam) spoke to Allah the Almighty. When Musa (Alayhi Salaam) asked Allah to let him see Him, Allah told him to look at the mountains. Musa (Alayhi Salaam) fell unconscious when the mountain fell down. When Musa (Alayhi Salaam) got up, he declared his total faith in Allah the Almighty. Regarding this story Allah says "...So when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He made it collapse to dust, and Mûsa fell down unconscious..." [Surah 'Araaf: Ayah 143] These are mountains which consist of rocks and stones, nevertheless they fear Allah. Allah says about the mountains "Had We sent down this Qur'ân on a mountain, you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rendt asunder by the fear of Allâh. Such are the parables which We put forward to mankind that they may reflect." [Surah Hashr: Ayah 21]

It is amazing to see a human being which is just a piece of flesh and yet he is harder than rock and stone and his heart is harder than the hardest rock. How can human beings listen to Allah's words and then turn away and become arrogant? Turning their backs on those words as if they had not listened to anything. Allah says "Have they not traveled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind." [Surah Hajj: Ayah 46]

Fellows Muslims, I ask Allah to bless you and me with the noble Quran and to benefit us from what it includes of clear signs and judicious speech. This is what I say and I ask Allah forgiveness for me, you, and all the Muslims. So ask Him to forgive you and seek His protection from Shaytaan, indeed He is the Most Merciful, Oft Forgiving.

Praise be to Allah for His beneficence and then to Him for His support and favors. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, the One God who has no partner. Exalted is His standing! I also testify that our Prophet Muhammad is His servant and messenger. May the abundant peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his household, and companions.

Fellow Muslims, before the mission of the Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam), a wolf gave an amazing speech to a shepard saying that sustenance is from Allah the Almighty. This wolf also ordered the shepard to fear Allah and said that he knows about the mission of the Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam). It is narrated in the hadith that a wolf attacked a goat and took it. Then the shepard ran after it to get the goat back. The wolf told the shepard to fear Allah saying how can you take provisions which Allah gave me? The shepard could not believe his ears because the wolf spoke to him. The wolf said to the shepard let me tell you something else that will cause you to be even more amazed. I feel like I am watching Muhammad (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) in Madeenah telling his people about the past nations. The companions (Radiallahu Anhum) wondered in amazement that a wolf could speak and the Prophet of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasalaam) said, "I believe it, and so do Abu Bakr and 'Umar."

Oh Muslims, know that Allah has commanded you to convey peace and blessings on His prophet. Allah says Allah says: “Allâh and His angels send Salât on the Prophet. O you who believe! Send your Salât on him, and greet him with the Islâmic way of greeting.” [Surah Ahzaab: Ayah 56]

Oh Allah, confer your peace and blessings on our Prophet Muhammad, and be pleased with his four rightly guided khulafa, Abu Bakr, 'Umar, Uthmaan, and 'Ali who judged according to truth and justice, and all of his companions, and all of us with them out of Your Forgiveness, Beneficence, and Mercy. Indeed You are the Most Merciful....

Part One

Praise be to Allah who alone enjoys Majesty and perfect Beauty, as a sign of His Greatness and Grandeur, and who alone conducts matters in their detail and generality in ordinance and disposition, and who is Supreme in His Greatness and Glory; it is He who revealed the Furqan (i.e. Qur'ān) to His servant (Muhammad () in order for it to be a warning for the Worlds; and I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone with no partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger who is supported by miracles and given victory by the wind from the Lord of all creatures; on him from Allah is the best Salat (Graces, Honors, and Mercy) and Peace; on his household the Good, the Pure; on his wives the mothers of the believers; and on his Companions and those who followed them in good faith till the Day of Judgment.

Fear Allah, O servants of Allah! And know that the best of the speech is embodied in the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance given by Muhammad (() and the worst evils are innovations (in Faith), and every innovation is a heresy, and every heresy is straying from the right path; seek the company of the community of Muslims, for Allah's Hand is on the hand of the (Muslim) community: (And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers’ way, We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell - what an evil destination!( [An-Nisâ: 115].

O People!

One of Allah's Ayats (signs) in this great universe on which depends life in the living human body is an Ayat (a sign) which arouses energy and motion and grants determination after languor. It is a sign whose existence gives man strength after weakness and relief after distress. If man reflects on it, his faith in his Lord increases and he will realize that He is the Creator and Owner of everything and that there is no true deity except Him. It is a sign on earth and in heaven by which Allah took oath in His Holy Book. Allah, the Creator ((), mentioned it in the Holy Qur'ān in twenty nine different places. Each oath Allah takes in His Book is great: (And verily that is indeed a great oath, if you but know.( [Al-Wâqi'ah: 76].

Allah (() can swear by whatever He wills of His creations and signs which He made as lessons and examples for those of understanding, and as proof and sorrow for every oblivious one who does not remember Allah by such signs, and do not return to Him by reflecting on them. Thus they are among those about whom Allah (() truly says: (And how many a sign in the heavens and the earth they pass by, while they are averse therefrom.( [Yûsuf: 105]. (And most of them believe not in Allâh except that they attribute partners unto Him [i.e. they are Mushrikûn i.e. polytheists. See Verse 6: 121].( [Yûsuf:106]

Indeed, Allah has taken an oath by this great sign four times in his Holy Book. He (() said: (By the winds (or angels or the Messengers of Allâh) sent forth one after another.(1)And by the winds that blow violently.(2) And by the winds that scatter clouds and rain.([Al-Mursalât: 1-3]. And He (() said: (By (the winds) that scatter dust.([Ath-Thâriyât: 1]. It is the sign of the wind(s), O servants of Allah!

It is the wind which, being obedient to Allah ((), is moved around by Him howsoever He wills. He says unto it: “Be, and it is”, in full submission to its Creator and Conductor just as the heavens and the earth have already submitted to Him ((): (Then He rose over (Istawâ) towards the heaven when it was smoke, and said to it and to the earth: "Come both of you willingly or unwillingly." They both said: "We come willingly."( [Fussilat: 11]

Allah (() has made the movement of winds among His signs intended for people of understanding. The wind can be cold and hot; it can blow from North, South, West, or East. It stirs up the clouds, joins them together, and then makes them into a heap of layers so the rain comes forth from between them. It acts as a fertilizer of rain and plants (carries the pollen), and a source of electrical power, mills, ships' sailing, aviation; however, all this does not exclude it from being one of Allah’s signs, and an object of thinking and reflecting on the dominions of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allah created.

If anything strikes you with astonishment, O servants of Allah, then it is indeed astonishing how the thinking of some Muslims has reached a level of intellectual disgrace and scientific inferiority, for they have been deceived by certain studies, beliefs, and cultures that have nothing to do with Islam and that which practice uniquely a purely materialistic outlook at the universe' phenomena and observed natural catastrophes in relation to their sources, causes, and the way of dealing with them. (We li At a time when some non-Muslims realize in their studies and discoveries the conditions of these phenomena and that such phenomena are not the work of Nature, neither in their beginning nor in their ending, and that behind this wind there lies a wisdom and a Wise Conductor who knows while they don’t know.

Perhaps the astonishment of non-Muslims will increase, or perhaps some of them might embrace Islam upon knowing that Islam has established the origin of such phenomena, and that the wind is one of Allah's miraculous creations in His great universe.

Some of them, after investing much effort, conducting a lot of research, and spending many years of their lives thereon, might think that they have discovered the secrets of the wind. However, the wind can have four states: a still wind, a favorable wind, a stormy wind, and a roaring wind.

Their astonishment reaches its apex, and the surprise its peak when they know that the Book of Allah (() fifteen hundred years ago mentioned these kinds of wind in that particular order at a time of an illiterate nation (Arab Nation) that does not read or write. He (() said of the still wind: (And among His Signs are the ships in the sea like mountains.( [Ash-Shûra: 32] (If He wills, He causes the wind to cease, then they would become motionless on the back (of the sea). Verily, in this are signs for everyone patient and grateful.( [Ash-Shûra: 33].

Most of the scholars of Qur’ānic exegesis who interpreted the Book of Allah (() long ago understood that what was meant by "ships" were sailing ships that cannot sail on the sea when the wind ceases. However the scientific miraculous nature of the Holy Qur'ān dazzles us by coming far ahead of modern scientific discoveries in showing that when the wind completely ceases, then ships will not be able to sail on the sea, neither sailing ships, steam ships, nor giant ships that use atomic energy. The reason is that all sources of energy used to push these ships need air oxygen, and when the wind ceases, oxygen ceases as a result, and the ships become motionless. The same can be said about airplanes, wind mills, and the like.

As for the gentle and stormy winds, Allah mentions them in these words: (He it is Who enables you to travel through land and sea, till when you are in the ships, and they sail with them with a favourable wind, and they are glad therein, then comes a stormy wind and the waves come to them from all sides, and they think that they are encircled therein( [Yûnus: 22], where waves reach in their height to a level above the ships coupled with a speed that leads to drowning when the winds have become stormy after being favorable.

The roaring wind is called a hurricane which takes a vertical shape towards the sky and makes sea waves very high, thus destroying ships and causing them to sink. A hurricane might be coupled with fire, or might not, which is most common.

Among the modern discoveries of the pioneers of geographical and geological research is that a hurricane that is coupled with fire is caused and generated by dense forest fires. It is self-evident that the Qur'an was revealed to a nation that mostly resided in the desert where no forests existed, yet Allah (() said in the time of early Muslims: (Would any of you wish to have a garden with date-palms and vines, with rivers flowing underneath, and all kinds of fruits for him therein, while he is stricken with old age, and his children are weak (not able to look after themselves), then it is struck with a fiery whirlwind, so that it is burnt? Thus does Allâh make clear His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses) to you that you may give thought .([Al-Baqarah: 266]

Here is the Book of Allah which came fifteen hundred years ago before these scientists. It is the True Religion of values, the Sibghah (religion) of Allah: (and which Sibghah (religion) can be better than Allâh’s? And we are His worshippers.( [Al-Baqarah: 138]

And then, may Allah protect you!

The wind is truly one of Allah’s soldiers. It can be a mercy for His believing servants and a herald of glad tidings, sent before His Mercy (rain). It carries a heavy-laden cloud, and Allah drives it to a land that is dead. He gives to drink thereof many of the cattle and men that He had created. Thus it is a blessing from Allah to His believing servants. It is also among the soldiers of Allah ((), the Lord of al-'ālamîn when He sends it against their enemies and oppressors. It has been verified that the Prophet (() said: “I have been helped by Assaba (the easterly wind).” [narrated by Muslim]

(The sheikh quotes two lines of poetry that say):

Only Allah, the All-Knowing, the All-Conquering, the Accepter of all repentance

Can count the number of soldiers in His Kingdom.

Allah has achieved a great victory against the confederate (Al-Ahzâb)

On behalf of His Servant (Prophet Muhammad (() ) with His soldiers, in the form of winds.

The wind can also be revenge and torment that Allah sends unto whom He wills of His servants, for it is He Who is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. Indeed, He destroyed the people of ‘Âd by Ad-Dabur, a (westerly), barren, furious wind: (And as for ‘Âd, they were destroyed by a furious violent wind!( [Al- Haqqa: 6]. He also destroyed the confederates who plotted against the Prophet (() and his Companions. Allah said about them: (O you who believe! Remember Allâh’s Favour to you, when there came against you hosts, and We sent against them a wind and forces that you saw not [i.e. troops of angels during the battle of Al-Ahzâb (the Confederates)]. And Allâh is Ever All-Seer of what you do.( [Al-Ahzab: 9].

The wind is also of the signs of the prophethood Prophet Muhammad ((). Jabir (() reported that Allah's Messenger (() was returning came from a journey and as he drew near Medina, a violent wind in a way that could bury the rider. Allah's Messenger (() said: “This wind has perhaps been made to blow for the death of a hypocrite.” When he reached Medina, he found that one of the most notorious hypocrites had died. [Narrated by Muslim]

Fear Allah, O servants of Allah! And contemplate Allah’s favour on His servants through the favourable wind, as Allah says: (And among His Signs is this, that He sends the winds as glad tidings, giving you a taste of His Mercy (i.e. rain), and that the ships may sail at His Command, and that you may seek of His Bounty, in order that you may be thankful.( [Al-Rum: 46]

Some of our ancestors said in explanation of the above verses (And among His Signs is this, that He sends the winds as glad tidings( that people rejoice because of such wind, (giving you a taste of His Mercy( means the rain that the wind carries, (and that the ships may sail at His Command( means the ships that the wind moves, (and that you may seek of His Bounty( means sea trade whose ships are moved by the wind, and (in order that you may be thankful.( means you Allah for the favour of sending winds.

(And it is He Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His Mercy (rain). Till when they have carried a heavy-laden cloud, We drive it to a land that is dead, then We cause water (rain) to descend thereon. Then We produce every kind of fruit therewith. Similarly, We shall raise up the dead, so that you may remember or take heed.( [Al-Araf: 57]

May Allah bless you and me by the Noble Qur'ān and Sunnah, and make the Qur'ān's verses and wise sayings beneficial to you and me. This is said, I ask forgiveness from Almighty Allah. Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving.

Part Two

Praise be to Allah alone, and may Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon His Chosen Prophet, his family, his Companions and those who followed him!

O People!

O Allah! How great and wonderful this religion is! How vast and comprehensive it is! It left no evil without warning against it, and no good without leading to it. Abu Dhar (one of the Companions of Prophet Muhammad) (() said: “When the Prophet (() passed away, no bird flapping its wings in the sky but would transmit to us some knowledge imparted by him.” [Narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Habban]

Some Mushrikûn (polytheists) asked Salman ((): “Your Prophet taught you everything, even about excreting?!” He replied: “Yes, he has forbidden us to face the Qibla at the time of excretion or urination ...” [Narrated by Muslim in his Sahih].

Our honorable Sharia also included guidance about how to deal with the wind. It has been verified that, if the wind blew, the Prophet (() used to say: “O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the good within it, and the good it was sent with, and I take refuge with You from its evil, the evil within it, and from the evil it was sent with.” [Narrated by Muslim]

The Prophet (() forbade us to curse the wind with any kind of abuse or disparagement. And So much so that if it was a windy or a cloudy day, it would show on his face ((); he would move forward and backward (in a state of anxiety); so if it rained, he would rejoice and his face cleared. 'A'isha (may Allah be pleas with her) said: "I asked him the reason of this anxiety and he said: “I was afraid that it might be a calamity that might fall upon my Ummah.”

Among his guidance (() is that his usual call to people when it was a rainy or a cold, windy night used to be: "Pray in your dwellings."

The scholars mentioned the permission of combing the prayers in a severe cold wind and they forbade Muslims from urinating against the wind in order not to become impure.

This is our religion and this is our Islamic Sharia (Your Lord is He Who drives the ship for you through the sea, in order that you may seek of His Bounty. Truly He is Ever Most Merciful towards you. And when harm touches you upon the sea, those that you call upon vanish from you except Him (Allâh Alone). But when He brings you safe to land, you turn away (from Him). And man is ever ungrateful. Do you then feel secure that He will not cause a side of the land to swallow you up, or that He will not send against you a violent sand-storm? Then, you shall find no Wakîl (guardian - one to guard you from the torment). Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back a second time to sea and send against you a hurricane of wind and drown you because of your disbelief? Then you will not find any avenger therein against Us.( [Al- Isra: 66-69]

Ask Him –may Allah have mercy on you– to send His Salat (Graces, Honours and Mercy) and Peace on the best creature of Allah and the purest of mankind, Muhammad ibn `Abd Allāh, who has the intercession, for Allah sent His Salat (Graces, Honours and Mercy) and Peace on him and then ordered His angles, that are praising His sanctity, to do likewise and called out to you to ask Him to send His Salat (Graces, Honours and Mercy) and Peace on him. O believers! Allah the Almighty (() says (O you who believe! Send your Salât HYPERLINK "http://www.qurancomplex.com/Quran/Targama/Targama.asp?nSora=33&l=eng&nAya=56" \l "f1#f1" [1] on (ask Allâh to bless) him (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As-Salâmu ‘Alaikum)(. [Al- Ahzab :56]

O Allah! Send Your Salat (Graces, Honours, and Mercy) and Peace on Your servant and Messenger Muhammad! O Allah! Be pleased with his four Caliphs –Abu Bakr, Omar, Othman and Ali, all of Your Prophet's (() Companions, the tab’în and those who righteously follow them till the Day of Judgment. O Allah! Be also pleased with us all, along with them, by Your Pardon, Generosity and Bounty, O You, the Most Merciful, Most Compassionate!

O Allah! Grant glory to Islam and Muslims! O Allah! Grant glory to Islam and Muslims! O Allah! Grant glory to Islam and Muslims, and fail polytheism and polytheists (who associate partners with You)! O Allah! Grant victory to Your religion, Your Book, the Sunnah of Your Prophet Muhammad (() and Your truthful believing servants!

O Allah! Put an end to the suffering of Muslims! Rescue those in distress, and help those indebted pay back their debts! Cure those of us and those of the Muslims who are ill, O You Most Merciful, Most Compassionate.

O Allah! Grant victory to our Muslim brothers who are oppressed in their religion everywhere! O Allah! Grant victory to our Muslim brothers who are oppressed in their religion everywhere! O Allah! Grant victory to the Muslims in Burma! O Allah! Grant victory to the Muslims in Syria! O Allah! Grant them power and victory over their tyrant and oppressors! O You, Lord of Majesty and Bounty.

O Allah! Fail their enemy; plague their life affairs, and make their years as lean as the lean years of Yusuf (Prophet Joseph)! O You, Lord of Majesty and Bounty.

O Allah! Grant us security in our homelands! Make good our leaders and those responsible for our affairs, and make our leadership from among those who are fearful of You, who guard taqwa (fear of Allah), and follow Your Path, O You, Lord of al-'ālamîn (the worlds)!

O Allah! Guide our leader to do and say whatever you love and accept. O You the Ever-Living, the Eternal Guardian. O Allah! Make his retinue righteous. O You the Lord of Majesty and Bounty.

O Allah! You are Allah, there is no deity worthy of worship except You! You are the Self-Sufficient and we are the poor! Send down rain upon us and do not make us despondent! O Allah! Send down rain upon us and do not make us despondent! O Allah! Send down rain upon us and do not make us despondent! O Allah! Do not deprive us of the best You have because of the worst we do! O Allah, we are creatures amongst Your creation, so do not make our sins impede Your grace! O You, the Lord of Majesty and Bounty, the Lord of al-'ālamîn (the worlds)!

(… Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!( [Al-Baqarah: 201]

Glorified be You Lord, the Lord of Honor and Power! You are free from what they attribute unto You! May peace be upon the Messengers! The last of our supplications is all praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!

Conscientiousness: Its Significance and Merit

Part One

All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, the (only) Originator [or the (Only) Creator] of the heavens and the earth, Who made the angels messengers with wings, two or three or four…  [Faŧer: 1]; The Forgiver of sin, the Acceptor of repentance, the Severe in punishment, the Bestower (of favours). Lâ ilâha illâ Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), to Him is the final return. [Ghafer: 3]; all praises and thanks be to Him (both) in the first (i.e. in this world) and in the last (i.e. in the Hereafter). And for Him is the Decision, and to Him shall you (all) be returned. [Al-Ǭašaš: 70].

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah with no associate, and I also bear witness that Muhammad () is Allah’s Servant and Messenger, portrayed in the Holy Quran as …the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad ), who believes in Allâh and His Words [(this Qur’ân), the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and also Allâh’s Word: "Be!" - and he was, i.e. ‘Îsâ (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary), عليهما السلام]… [Al-Arâf: 158]. May Allah send His bounteous Salat (i.e. Graces, Honours, and Mercy) and Peace on him, his chaste and virtuous family, wives (mothers of the believers), Companions, and the tab'în (the contemporaries of the Companions of the Prophet [] after his death), and on all those who have virtuously embraced their tradition till the Day of Judgement.

O Servants of Allah!

Observe taqwa (i.e. fear of violating Allah’s commands) and bear in mind that the Herein is but an ephemeral form of life rather than a locus of eternal residence. Allah has made you trustees of its resources to test your conduct: As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allâh and fears Him And believes in Al-Husnâ  We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness) [Al-Layl: 5-7]

O Muslims!

The world nowadays is experiencing a most sophisticated era of technical advancement and ultra-modern information technology. It is witnessing a state of euphoria stimulated by successive innovations and inventions in all walks of life. No sooner do people get familiar with an original novelty through scrutinising its structure and function than another equally ingenious innovation bewilders them to the extent that they forget about the previous one.

Thanks to its strong motivation and high sense of curiosity, the world has reached outer space and manufactured the atomic bomb. Yet, it has been unable to stimulate the conscience and resuscitate the scruples of societies and peoples. It has failed to fill the spiritual void reigning over society and affirm the concept that life is simply a means rather than an end in itself. Paradoxically enough, they do have the capacity to observe stars in the sky but remain quite sightless when it comes to detecting a particle of dust in the eye.

In fact, much ink has been spilled on the topic of individual conscientiousness and scruples which has been constantly advocated by many earnest reformers and advisers who are dutiful to their nation and people. Unfortunately, such advocacy had little echo in real life as it failed to move the Islamic nation from confinement to liberty, from humiliation to glory, from egotism to self-effacement, and from dearth to worth. Quite often, awareness is only available when it is too late—if ever it is the case. It is reactive rather than proactive. More often than not, rescue coincides with the disaster itself instead of resulting from the vociferous warnings of counsellors. This confirms the poet’s verse:

The Sheikh cites a line of poetry:

(I offered them advice while we were going round the tortuous turning of the district by night, but they only understood its essence the following morning).

O servants of Allah!

Conscientiousness is that inner human feeling which makes individuals monitor their own behaviour. It is a sense of scrupulous self-monitoring that fosters in the individual a psychological predisposition to distinguish between good and evil in speech, action, and thought. It enables one to appreciate what is good and repel what is evil. In essence, Islam is a divinely revealed religion founded on freedom. This is why it emancipated people from worshipping humans and orientated them to the worship of Allah alone and unrivalled. Islam affirmed that glory is the fruit of faith whereas humiliation and inferiority are strongly associated with unbelief, wickedness, and sinful disobedience.

All such meanings manifest themselves through individual conscientiousness and a sense of ethical awareness to be subsequently extended to the entire Islamic society. Whenever this dynamic sense of ethical awareness is absent from a given society, its members will systematically turn into spiritless bodies. Certain societies might paradoxically promote their members to the status of satanic entities in human disguise.

Each manifestation in social reality of such common issues such as strength vs. weakness, wealth vs. poverty, faith vs. immorality, and justice vs. injustice is inevitably closely connected to the state of people’s conscience and their sense of ethical awareness: whether vigilant, lost, or dormant. Nowadays, Muslim societies are suffering from the absence of fully committed conscientiousness and sense of ethical awareness. In the past, when such principle was prevalent in their daily lives, people in the Levant used to say “bless you” to someone who sneezed in the western side of the territory, and when someone sought succour in the north those in the south would answer his cry for help.

In fact, one can but look aghast at what is going on in the life of this nation. Quite surprisingly, even the screams of pain from someone just next to you would remain unheard; his helpless hand gestures to seek urgent assistance would fail to attract the attention of passers-by: …Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind [Al-Ĥajj: 46] .

The nation’s conscience will never awaken before its individuals’ conscience regains life, for how can the shadow of a body be straight if the body itself is crooked and how can someone with crippled fingers wear a ring? As a rule, the weaker conscience is, the later this sense of conscientiousness and ethical revival will be. It seems as if certain people’s conscience had been resistant to change to the extent of sterility and absolute inefficacy.

People can be categorised into different groups depending on the nature of their inner conscience. The first category is endowed with an unmistakably energetic conscience allowing them to recognise and enjoin what is good and reject what is evil. They share their nation’s worries, sufferings, and hopes. They relieve people’s grief, alleviate their sufferings, and echo their sighs. They are modest with true believers but relentless opponents to criminal tyrants. They implacably ignore human reproaches: …That is the Grace of Allâh which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allâh is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower [Al-Maîda: 54]

The second category of people has a dormant conscience bordering on vacuity. A man with a dormant conscience is like a dumb and powerless slave [1] who is a burden on his master; whichever way he directs him, he brings no good. He is only a statistic devoid of action. He is in a death-in-life state lurking in anticipation for some material benefits or deriving personal privileges. He may also be tainted with the fear of leaving unsupported and weak offspring behind. [2] His inner voice echoes the following expression: “I am all for number ONE.” Consequently, this category of people hardly offers help or advice . They behave as though they were created just to eat and drink. These people are required to resuscitate their conscience before it irreversibly joins the dead ones.

As to the third category, these are people characterised by inert conscience. They are dominated by evil and contain little, if any good. They are neither at the forefront nor at the rear . They only share all that is evil and are only noticed enjoining evildoing and proscribing good conduct and noble values. These people are typically tight-fisted. They have forgotten Allah; as a result, Allah has totally ignored their existence and doomed them to oblivion. They are typically liars, cheaters, egotists, slanderers, fault-finders, and going about with calumnies.[3]

An internal voice betrays their inner thoughts: “I must just rescue myself; after me the deluge! Attack is the best defence strategy.” They are like houseflies targeting bleeding injuries. Their society abhors their existence and constantly seeks protection from their imminent threat. It seems as if they were created just to commit evil acts and have their action scales burdened with sins until their final encounter with Allah, suffering total disfigurement.

So, observe taqwa (i.e. fear of violating Allah’s commands)—may Allah bestow His grace on you—and never forget that living conscience is the stimulator of real faith. Its fruit is mutual love, compassion, and empathy. It acts as a catalyst for unity in the entire complementary organism of the nation—as confirmed in the Prophet's () Hadith , “The case of the believers in their mutual love, compassion, and empathy is similar to that of the (human)body: whenever a single organ suffers from pain, the rest of the body will respond by showing symptoms of sleeplessness and fever.” (Narrated by Imam Muslim in his Saĥiĥ Book).

If each one of us tried himself before his own conscience one would realize that the tree of negligent conscience never bears fruit. Should any of us completely surrender to the dictates of his conscience, whether good or evil, he would feel so intolerably uptight and disturbed about it and his eye will never be able to see the truth the way it should be seen. Right then everyone calling to account will realize that turning a blind eye to accountability to one’s conscience and patronizing it have much more serious consequences than the causes of such failure.

It follows then that every faithful must take the initiative to interrogate his conscience; for a silent conscience is a ‘silent devil’. Likewise, a conscience that speaks only evil is a ‘speaking devil’.

The Islamic sharia has come down to us in order to uphold conscience and to prevent it from perishing or withering away, inducing members of the Muslim community to realize the importance of such an undertaking, to guard themselves against the evil of dead or negligent conscience, and to bear in mind that a living and vigilant conscience is their only resort for strength and integration.

The Messenger of Allah () said: “Don't nurse envy against one another! Don’t practice Najsh [4]! Don't nurse aversion against one another! Don't be inquisitive about one another and don't outbid one another (with a view to raising the price)! Be fellow-brothers and servants of Allah! A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim: he does not oppress him, nor does he fail him, lie to him, or scorn him. Taqwa (piety) is right here” [and he pointed to his chest three times]. O Servants of Allah! That is indeed what is meant by ‘living conscience’.
“Taqwa is right here”. Then he says: “ It is a serious evil for a Muslim that he should look down upon his brother Muslim. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for his brother in faith: his blood, his wealth and his honour.”

May Allah bestow His blessings, for you and for me, in the Qur'ān and sunnah and benefit us with the verses, Dhikr [5] and wisdom therein. I have said what I have said; if it is true it is thanks to Allah, but if it is wrong it is because of me and the accursed Satan. I seek forgiveness from Allah. He is All-Forgiving!

Part Two

Praise be to Allah Alone! May His Peace and Salat (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) be upon the seal of all messengers!

O People!

No true believer would doubt it for a moment that the ummah, while being scorched by the flames of conflicts, disasters, aggression and wars that have ravaged everything in their way, is now more than ever in need for true conscience that is clear from all forms of hatred and envy. What the ummah really needs are Muslims with compassionate and admonishing conscience willing to overlook their personal and relatively negligible interests and focus on the yet more important and more pressing issues that concern their brothers in faith and community in general. Having said that, we must all realize that once there is no more conscience, egoism and selfishness will take over and the prevalent logic among individuals and communities will be something like: ‘mind your own business’; ‘what for? You won’t be able to make a difference’; ‘what else can you do?’ ‘You’re not entrusted to sponsor, represent or protect so and so.”

When conscience is no more, one starts hearing statements like ‘leave what’s for Allah to Allah and what’s for Ceasar to Ceasar’. When conscience is no more, the treacherous are trusted and the truthful are accused of treason; liars are believed and the honest are called liars.

In the absence of conscience lambs change to roaring lions, he-camels to she-camels and turkey vultures to eagles. Seas will derive their waters from wells, the frivolous will speak out and people will entrust their leadership to the ignorant who will then walk and lead others astray.

When conscience is gone, reproach becomes admonition, backbiting freedom of speech, and slandering exhortation.

When conscience is gone, the oppressor will not refrain from destroying an entire population. He will then proceed to slaughter, blow up, imprison and displace people; they cry out and call out for help, but in vain.

When conscience is no more, tyranny gets the upper hand, justice wanes, stinginess prevails, exhortation goes scarce, pests and punishments are poured down, buildings are destroyed block by block, with no chance for restoration.

Finally, when conscience goes feelings go with it and it matters, no more, who is up and who is down. People would then prefer to be buried under the ground rather than remain on it.

On the authority of Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah () said: “The Last Hour would not come until a person would pass by a grave of another person and he would roll over it saying: I wish it had been my abode; not out of religious belief but because of this calamity. [Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]

There is no good in this life and this living
When the key to conscience is lost and gone
Don’t you see that the solid grains are turning
Into flour under the effect of the grinding stone

Ask Allah –may He have mercy on you– to send His Salat (Graces, Honours and Mercy) and Peace on the best creature of Allah and the purest of mankind, Muhammad ibn `AbdAllāh, who is given al-Hawdh (the sacred basin) and is vested with intercession; for Allah sent His Salat (Graces, Honours and Mercy) and Peace on him and then ordered His angels, that are praising His sanctity, to do likewise and called out to you, O believers, to ask Him to send His Salat (Graces, Honours and Mercy) and Peace on him. Allah the Almighty () says: Allâh sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad), and also His angels (ask Allâh to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salât[1] on (ask Allâh to bless) him (Muhammad ), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As-Salâmu ‘Alaikum). [AlAhzab: 56]. The Prophet (ρ) said: "He who offers me a Salat, Allah will offer him ten such Salats as a reward".

O Allah! Send Your Salat (Graces, Honours and Mercy), Peace and Blessing upon Your Servant and Messenger, Muhammad! O Allah! Be pleased with the four Caliphs, Abu Bakr, Omar, Othman and Ali, all of his Companions, on the tab'în and those who righteously followed them till the Day of Judgment. O Allah! Be also pleased with us all, along with them, by Your Pardon and Generosity, O You, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate!

O Allah! Grant glory to Islam and Muslims, and fail polytheism and polytheists (who associate partners with You)! O Allah! Grant glory to Your religion, Your Book and the Sunnah of Your Prophet, and Your believing servants!

O Allah! Relieve the distressed among Muslims, alleviate their anguish, pay off the debts of those indebted, and cure our patients and theirs, with Your Mercy, O You, Most Merciful!

O Allah! Grant our souls piety, and purify them, You are the best Who Purifies them, You are their Guardian and Master! With Your Mercy, You, the Most merciful!

O Allah! Grant us safety in our homelands, and set right our Imams and Guardians. O Allah! Make our leadership from among those who fear You, guard taqwa and seek Your satisfaction, O Lord of the Worlds!

O Allah! Guide our leader to say and do whatever You love and please, O You, the Living, the Everlasting! O Allah! Set right his retinue, O You, the Lord of Majesty and Honour!

O Allah! Be on the side of our brothers who are oppressed and defenseless in their religion, wherever they may be! O Allah! Grant them victory against Your enemy and theirs; O Allah! Grant them victory sooner rather than later, You, The Lord of Majesty and Honour! O Allah! Grant them victory in Palestine, Syria, Burma, and everywhere, You, The Lord of Majesty and Honour; the Lord of the Worlds!

O Allah! Make it a speedy victory and relief for them! O Allah! Make it a crowning victory, O You, the Living, the Everlasting!

O Lord! You are Allah, and there is no deity worthy of worship but You! You are the Self-sufficient while we (humans) are destitute! Do send down rain on us and save us from despair! O Allah! Send down rain on us and save us from despair! O Allah! Send down rain on us and save us from despair! O Allah! We beseech You not to make the worst of our deeds a reason for depriving us of the best of Your Grace! You, the Lord of Majesty and Honour!

O Allah! We are but creatures of Yours. We implore You not to make our sins stand between us and Your grace, O You, the Living, the Everlasting, the Lord of the Worlds!

… Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire! [Al-Baqarah: 201]

Glorified be our Lord, the Lord of Honor and Power! You are free from what they wrongly attribute unto You! May peace be upon all the Messengers! And the last of our supplications is “praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!”

[1] The Sheikh’s statement is indirectly quoted from the Holy Quran And Allâh puts forward (another) example of two men, one of them dumb, who has no power over anything (disbeliever), and he is a burden on his master; whichever way he directs him, he brings no good.  [Al-Naĥl: 76]

[2] Once again, the Sheikh’s statement is indirectly quoted from the Holy Quran: And let those (executors and guardians) have the same fear in their minds as they would have for their own, if they had left weak offspring behind. So let them fear Allâh and speak right words. [Al-Nissâ: 9]
