Sunni Muslim scholars have given many different reasons for the return of Prophet Jesus عليه السلام to this World. A few are listed below:

1) The Jews believe that they killed Prophet Jesus عليه السلام , Allah will send him before the end of time to prove that they did not killed him and that he is alive. It is Jesus who will fight the Jews and kill their leader, the Dajjal. (Ibn Hajar Al'Asqalani's Fathul-Bari)

2) Some scholars have said that Prophet Jesus عليه السلام found many virtues of the followers of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم in the Bible and thus he prayed to Allah to make him amongst the nation of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم . Allah answered his prayer and he will return for the second time as one of the followers of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم . (Ibn Khathir)

3) It is the Law of Allah that anything created from the Earth has to be buried in the Earth and not in the Heavens. Thus, he will return to the Earth for the second time, kill the Dajjal, live for a period of time and then he will die a natural death and will be buried near the Prophet Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم . (Muhammad Al-Barzanji's book Al-Isha'ah li Ashrat AsSaa'h).

Jesus never was a christian. He was from the Jews sent to the Jews who rejected him. He will come back as a Muslim and enforce the laws of Islam, then christian or jew, you will be with him or against him.

Jesus didn't die and like all men death is due him, he's a sign to mankind and to fulfil Allah swt' promise and to taste death like all men do.
Jesus wasn't a Jew, nor a christian and non of the prophets were. They are all Muslims.. all on the path of Abraham!

try reading the Quran sometimes:
Al-Imran (The Family of Imran)[3:67]

Ma kana ibraheemu yahoodiyyan wala nasraniyyan walakin kana haneefan musliman wama kana mina almushrikeena

That is the 'amazing' story!

There are many finer points to this which cannot be covered (due to lack of knowledge) but Jesus (pbuh) was born with miracle like being able to speak from birth. He never lived a 'normal' life like all other prophets before being called to prophethood (although I know almost nothing of his early years). He never married and was purely a servant of Allah. So he will be given the chance to do so.

Hence when he does descend, he will not be the 'leader' of muslims as the final prophet was Muhammad (pbuh) and has his task to only kill Dajjal. He will live as a normal human being and face death like everyone else.

Personally, I view this as another 'miracle' for Islam, aside from the Quran. Like the Jews, they spent thousands of years waiting for their promised land without ever wavering in their belief that they WILL get it back (which they have), we muslims too have our miracle that will come to further 'authenticate' our belief in the coming of Jesus at the end of times.

The question then becomes, (if it happens in our lifetime), what will we do? More like what would I do? Declare him a 'quack' and ignore the sign or join the ranks of the believers? I dua that I will be amongst the believers.
