Masjid Raya Baiturrahman, Banda Aceh

mainphp?g2 viewcoreDownloadItem&ampg2 itemId8491&ampg2 serialNumber2 -
(photo: explorer-photo.com)

The largest mosque in Aceh that become the landmark of Banda Aceh.

Masjid Raya (grand mosque) Baiturrahman was built by the Dutch to placate the people of Aceh after the Dutch colonial forces burned old Baiturrhaman mosque in April 1873, the same day when major general Koehler was killed by an Aceh sniper.

After consultation with local ulema in Aceh, the Dutch began to rebuild the Baiturrahman mosque in October 1879 and was completed December 1881. Designed by De Bruijn, a captain in the Dutch army. There was only one dome at that time. In 1935, the Dutch colonial added two domes, so Baiturrahman had three domes.

After independence, the government of Indonesia to build two domes and two towers, were completed in 1967, so Baiturrahman had five domes. And finally in 1991 govt built two more domes, and now Baiturrahman has seven domes.

Baiturrahman when it had one dome. (photo: wiki)

In general, the architecture of Baiturrahman is an eclectic patterned, which is a design resulting from the combination of various elements and the best models from various countries so that the mosque be so majestic and beautiful. To add to the splendor and beauty, the mosque is positioned in the middle of the field wide open and that all parts of the mosque can be seen clearly from a distance.

The first part of the mosque was the one position attached to the main unit. After the gate, there is a rectangular portico. The front, left, and right porch surrounded by a staircase that form the letter U. At the front end, there are three openings (windows without doors) which was formed by four slender cylindrical pole Moorish architectural models that are common in mosques North Africa and Spain. And, between the poles connected to one another with a broken gate model of Persia.

Since there are four pillars, that means there are three gates. At the top and sides of the gate, there are ornate arch-bend relief, such as Arabesque patterns (motive of leaves, branches, and trees). At the third gate, there is a kind of ladder-shaped tympanum like the cross section of a ladder. The style is typical of the classical model of the Netherlands.

At each stage, decorated with miniature a substation or a cupola adorned onion domes on the top. The style shows the influence of India. So, from the outside of course, is so obvious eclectic feel of this mosque. Left and right side of the porch has two poles are connected by a door, decorations similar to the front porch.

After passing through the hall, then go to the main mosque used for prayer. However, before going into the main room, there are more gates and poles are the same as the front. Gate without doors, like most ancient mosques in India.

The middle of a square prayer hall are the main dome topped by a beautiful and majestic character of onions. Cunduk decorated bud, like the ancient mosques in India. On each side, there is a window that is used as air circulation.

At the bottom, there is "tritisan" in octagon shape. On the left and right of the main prayer hall, there is a twin wing unit so that the building is to be symmetrical. Layered pyramid-shaped roof of the mosque two. In the window that contained in this mosque, it looked very much Moorish influence, especially from the intricate patterned decoration.

Not only that, the existence of a pool of water in front of more and add a beautiful for Masjid Baiturrahman. Therefore, the position at the middle of the road between the left and right with an area of about five to seven meters it helped add to the beauty and splendor of the mosque of residents of Banda Aceh.

The photo above is the mosque of Al-Hilal katangka in Gowa, South Sulawesi. One of the oldest mosques in Indonesia, built in 1603 during the reign of the king of Gowa Sultan Alaudin I.

Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah/MJAT (Grand Mosque of Central Java) was built on the land owned by Masjid kauman Semarang (see previous post) which ever 'lost' due to mistake in swap between Masjid Kauman and a private company. Later after this land back to Masjid Kauman, Central Java provincial govt decided to build a new mosque that would become the provincial mosque of Central Java province.

Construction process started in 6 Sept 2002, attended by ambasadors of Saudi Arabia, UEA, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Palestine, and representative from Abu Dhabi. Sultan Hasanal Bolkiah from Brunei Darussalam sent his representatives and gave a "khutbah stick".

Designed by Ir.H Ahmad Fanani from Atelier Enam architect bureau Jakarta who won architecture contest in 2001, MJAT combines Javanese, Islam, and Roman architectural style. The main building is a typical Javanese mosque buildings but the tip section is equipped with a large dome 20 meters in diameter coupled with 4-high towers each 62 meters in each corners of the roof as a form of universal Islamic mosque complete with a separate tower of the mosque as high as 99 meters that named Asma Al-Husna tower.

Asma Al-Husna tower (photo: Soomaydee)

Asma Al-Husna tower has 19 floors which 1st floor used for Radio DAIS MJAT, 2nd and 3rd floor for "Islamic history in Central Java" museum, 18th floor for restaurant, and 19th floor is for observe moonsighting (in Ramadhan). But visitor can visit the 19th floor that equiped by binocular telescope.

MJAT has 6 giant umbrella like in Masjid Nabawi. Each is 20 meters high with a width of 14 meters while expanding. The umbrellas opened during salah Jum'ah and Eid. But if visitor want to see the giant umbrella when opened, they can contact the masjid caretaker.

I have guessed, there must be a comment like this.

Yes, Riau province govt spent much money to rebuild and enlarge masjid An-nur. But people of Riau did not mind with it. Different than Taj Mahal India that actually a grave yard, Masjid An-Nur Pekanbaru is intended as da'wah centre, and public space where people can gather and meet the other there.

Alhamdulillah then.

Once upon a time our mosques were almost crumbling structures, but our deeds were so strong that we brought down whole empires, now our mosques look like palaces and castles yet..

Sorry, please carry on with the pics.

Brothers, sisters, before we visit other mosques I will show you a famous mosque which I'm familiar with.

Masjid Salman ITB, Bandung

Masjid Salman ITB is the first "campus mosque" in Indonesia. Although it's not located inside Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) campus, but accross the Ganesha street, this masjid was built to accomodate ITB Muslim students activities.

The idea to build this Mosque came from Achmad Noe'man (born 1926) when he became student in ITB since 1948, then he started to design a mosque building. In 1958 Achmad Noe'man and few friends came to president Soekarno, proposed idea to build a mosque and showed the design. President Soekarno approved this design and gave name "Salman" for this mosque, inspired by Salman Al-Farizi (ra). But this mosque building process finished in 1972 due to instable political situation.

Pictire was taken from east side.

(photos: salmanitb.com)

Maybe Masjid Salman is the first mosque in Indonesia that without dome or stacked roof that become typical of Indonesian mosque. This wooden floor mosque also does not have pilar inside masjid hall, something that become typical of mosques that designed by Achmad Noe'man.

(photo: ???)

What make Masjid Salman familiar with me is because my highschool is located near Masjid Salman. I often visited this mosque. Even after I graduated from highschool sometime I visited Masjid Salman.

Masjid Al-Akbar Surabaya (MAS) is built on the idea of H. Soenarto Soemoprawiro (late) Surabaya mayor at the time. MAS construction groundbreaking ceremony conducted by the Vice President H. Try Sutrisno on August 4, 1995, while the new construction began in September 1996. MAS construction was stopped because of the economic crisis before it resumed in 1999. Coinciding with the Hero day on November 10, 2000 MAS was inaugurated by the President, KH. Abdurrahman Wahid. In terms of size, MAS is the second largest mosque in Indonesia after Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. MAS also has a mihrab which is the largest among mosque in Indonesia.

MAS architectural design and construction was done by a team from the Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS) with an expert consultant who has experience building big mosques in Indonesia and abroad. The first step of development is done by loading test to determine the strength of the soil load, followed by determining the Qibla direction attended by religious leaders from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Council of Mosques and others. To smooth the development process, the Department of Transportation and Public Works Department opened the highway to the mosque for the purpose of transporting heavy equipment that can not be carried through the streets in residential areas.

MAS has a 99 meter high tower whose top is equipped with a view tower at a height of 68 meters which can accommodate about 30 people and achieve it by using the elevator to see the sights of the city of Surabaya.

This mosque has 45 doors with doors (opening) which means it takes 90 double doors with each size: width 1.5 m and height of 4.5 m. Doors made of teak wood specially provided by Perhutani state forestry company and made by the craftsmen of Surabaya. Frame is made of wood coated steel frame that is connected to the hinge and slot that has been aligned with the structure and aesthetics of the mosque. Because the weight of the door is more than 250 kg, the hinge is designed and manufactured specifically.

Besides a prayer room and supporting facilities, MAS is also equipped with other facility facility including the meeting rooms in various sizes: Main Room, Zaitun, Yasmin, Ma'wah & Firdaus, As Shofa, Al Marwah, Multazam, Ar-Raudhah, Umar, Abu Bakr, Ali, Usman, Bonang & Drajat, Hussain, Aisha & Khodijah, Zam-zam area, breezeway / Main foyer, library ,expo center, as well as the outdoor areas. Frankly, masjid Salman interior always made me feel like in auditorium whenever I perform salah there, except salah jum'ah.

I say except salah jum'ah because in every salah jum'ah in Masjid Salman, I always got the place out of the masjid hall. :D

By the way, I'm not living near Masjid Salman. I live in southern area while Masjid Salman is in northern area of Bandung.

The image above is bedug, a large drum made of wood and buffalo leather. Muezzin beat the bedug before he call azan to make people know that the prayer time has come. This habit started when no speakers in masjid.

In the past, every mosque in Indonesia must have a drum. However, after an "Islamic Reformation" in the 20th century, many of the mosques that have left the bedug as it is considered as not part of Islamic tradition. But the bedug is still used in mosques run by "The Traditionalist Muslims".

The mosque where I often salah is one mosque that still use bedug.

Masjid Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II, Palembang

Part 1 of 2

If you notice the picture above you will see that the building actually consist of two mosque buildings. The smaller on the foreground with red roof is the old mosque, while the bigger on the background is the new mosque. Front minaret is part of old building. One of the unique thing of Masjid Sultan mahmud Badaruddin II is, this masjid consist of two separeted mosque building with only one Mihrab and Mimbar (Imam and Khatib place) where located in old building.

(Photo: bujangmasjid.blogspot.com)

Palembang Grand Mosque is one of the inheritances of the Palembang Sultanate. This mosque is known as the center of Palembang city. It was built from 1738 to 1748 by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I, also known as Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Jaya Wikramo. Some say it was the largest mosque in Indonesia at that time.

When it was first built, it covered a land area of 1,080 square meters (about 0.26 acres) with a capacity of 1,200 persons. It was then expanded by Sayid Umar bin Muhammad Assegaf Altoha and Sayid Achmad bin Syech Sahab under the leadership of Prince Nataagama Karta Mangala Mustafa Ibnu Raden Kamaluddin.

From 1819 to 1821, a renovation was made by the Dutch colonial government. After that, further expansions were made in 1893, 1916, 1950s, 1970s, and lastly in 1990s. During an expansion in 1966-1969 by the Grand Mosque Foundation, its second floor was built covering a land area of 5,520 square meters with a capacity of 7,750 persons. During renovation and development in 1970s by Pertamina, towers were constructed. The original Chinese style tower was maintained as it is now. This mosque is very typical of Palembang tradition. Most of its timbers have Palembang typical carvings called Lekeur.

At present, the original building of this mosque is located in the middle of a new building, officially inaugurated by Indonesia's fifth president, Megawati Soekarnoputri. Since it is surrounded by the Musi River and its streams, this mosque is located as if it is in the center of the city.

A mosque in the area of tea plantations of Puncak, Bogor regency, in route of Jakarta - Bandung via Puncak (peak). Masjid Atta'awun can be called a "traveler mosque" because most of the people who prayed at this mosque are those who are on their way.

Subhan Allah, the beauty of liability of prayer in congregation in Rokan Hulu regency

By: Muhammad Nuh (translated by Ardianto)

This is probably the regency that very represent religiosity of Indonesian society. Imagine, the regent and his deputy agreed to issue a policy of obligatory prayers in congregation for civil servants and the temporary employee Rokan Hulu regency, Riau. Especially Dhuhr and Asr prayers in congregation.

Regent of Rokan Hulu or Rohul, Drs. H. Achmad M.Si confirms that the obligation prayers in congregation is a form of government concern in the Muslim pilgrimage, especially prayer. "From this prayer, In Sha Allah, there will be prevention in every individual from shameful and unjust deeds," said the regent told reporters.

Liability prayers in congregation, which began 25 April 2011 was conducted simultaneously in the Rohul regency government. Prayer in congregation performed centrally at the Grand Mosque Islamic Center Pasir Pengaraian. This event directly led by the regent and his deputy.

Policy rule has been announced to the whole range of local government. Every 11:30 AM, all government activities rested, for the implementation of the prayer in congregation. Each employee both men and women, especially those not being hindered, dressed all in white. All-white dress has also been provided by local government officials to private ownership.

After Dhuhr prayer in congregation, the leaders in turn deliver lectures Kultum or seven minutes lecture. "In Sha Allah, then will be forged strong unity, high awareness, togetherness reliable and steadfast family and togetherness," said Regent that supported by Ulema Council of Riau.

All employees will be back on the move in the regency at 02.00 PM. And at 03:30 PM, they returned pray Asr in congregation. Regent asserted,'' If you do not agree with this policy, I would recommend to duty outside in Rokan Hulu. I encourage employees to perform prayers, since prayer is the key to everything. Especially because prayer in congregation is very large reward of the prayer itself. I am responsible to Allah, if I sinned, I ready to receive! "

To reinforce this noble policy, Regent issued a policy of cutting transport allowance for employees who three times in a row for a month does not perform prayers in congregation. Pieces were not kidding, one hundred percent.

Accordingly, the mosque has provided tools attendance through fingerprints electronically so that employees are not truant or lie during the implementation of the prayer in congregation.

Regent of area that known as "the land of thousand suluk(tasawuf)" is believed that changes in the mentality of government officials require improvement of the worship. And one of them through this prayer in congregation.

If all over Indonesia to follow this policy, Subhan Allah, there would be a fundamental change in the government apparatus. And it should, it starts from Jakarta. MNH

Masjid Jami Kebon Jeruk, Jakarta

(photo: jakartacityseekr.com)

Masjid Jami Kebon Jeruk which located in Hayam Wuruk street, West Jakarta was built by a [I] Muhajir [/ I] from China named Chau Tsien Hwu in 1786.

Previously, on this place has stood a musala. When Chau Tsien Hwu came, he found the mosque in a state of disrepair and unkempt. Together with his fellow muhajirin, he took the initiative to build a mosque which until now is still standing strong in original shape as when established.

Masjid Jami Kebon Jeruk is just a simple little mosque even with almost no ornaments. But this mosque became famous because this is the home base of Tablighi Jama'at Indonesia.

Becoming empty? in Indonesia?. I don't think so.

From what I have noticed, year by year Jama'ah in mosques relatively stable. Mosques are full or even overload when Juma'ah, and ....... yes, ... empty in other time.

Masjid Al-Irsyad Kota Baru Parahyangan. (Photo: 2dheart.wordpress.com)

Al-Irsyad mosque is located in West Bandung regency. This mosque was built in 2009 and was completed in 2010. The shape of the mosque at a glance just like a big cube Like the shape of the Dome building in Saudi Arabia. With this concept, from the outside looks black stripes all over the walls of the mosque.

The mosque designed like Kabah. Basically in gray. The overall arrangement of bricks on the walls looks very impressive. The bricks are arranged in a hole or a gap in the solid brick. Construction of the mosque was orchestrated by famous architect Ridwan Kamil (now Bandung city mayor). He created a unique design of a mosque that utilize sunlight. Qiblah direction designed oen, without wall that shows the natural landscape. At dusk, the sun tinge will enter from the front of the mosque were not walled.

The classical argument of Indonesian when a foreigner sees an old building that not maintained well. "Oh, sir, that building is categorized as cultural heritage. So we cannot renovate because it would make that building lose its original appearance".

Today I perform salah asr in Masjid Al-Imtizaj, a small mosque with Chinese architectural style that located in Cikapundung street, Bandung.

Masjid Al-Imtizaj is a fairly new mosque that built in 2010. The idea to build this mosque came from Mr. Nuriana (former governor of West Java) who wanted to give gifts to converts from among the Chinese ethnic. The mosque was designed by the architectural team headed by Mr. Danny Swardhani who has designed several mosques, including masjid Atta'awun. (post #44)

Masjid Al-Imtizaj also known as Masjid Ronghe in Chinese language, or Masjid Pembauran in Indonesian language, which all mean "assimilation".
