OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Dr. Rasem Khamaisi, an urban-planning expert, said that the Israeli Occupation Authority (IOA) continued its attempts to change the demographic reality of occupied Jerusalem by limiting the Palestinian population in the city.

The occupation imposed restrictions on the Palestinian construction in the city while allowing the establishment of Israeli buildings in an attempt to reinforce the Israeli control over the city, he said.

The occupation authorities provide facilities, incentives, and reductions to the Israelis in order to encourage the Israeli construction in the city, he said.

Khamaisi affirmed that the Israeli municipal authorities have prepared maps for new neighborhoods fully eliminating the Palestinian existence.

The Israeli authorities deliberately hinder the Palestinian expansion in eastern Jerusalem by preventing the construction permits for the Palestinian residents, he explained.

Khamaisi pointed out to the shortage in housing for Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem, noting that there are housing organizations trying to solve the housing problem in the city.

The Israeli extremist families are being relocated to the Israeli settlements in the eastern part of occupied Jerusalem, he added.

This new phenomenon aims to increase the Israeli presence in eastern Jerusalem and to impose the Israeli control over the area, he explained.

The Jerusalemite expert said that there are attempts at the restoration process of Palestinian buildings in Old Jerusalem in an attempt to maintain the buildings' historical and architectural character, but there is lack of funding.

At least 20.5% of the houses in the old town are not suitable for living in, 29.5% of homes are in need to renovation, 11.4% of the houses need to be expanded, while 18.1% of the houses can be classified as good, said Khamaisi.

There is also a significant increase in the price of land due to the decrease of available lands which in turn led to increasing the multi-storey residential buildings in the city.
