A friend of mine who has recently deconverted from Islam told me of a story about Safiyyah and Rayana, which is quite disturbing. However, I am pretty sure the way he tells it is quite biased, because he is quite bitter against Islam. Can Muslims here point me towards what you believe to be the proper understanding of the story? I would like to see both sides and maybe show him another way of looking at the story. Could it be perhaps seen as a love story rather than a story of conquest, torture and subjugation?

I've actually not heard the story. How was it told to you?
