View Full Version : What is the truth about the Rothschilds?

1. The Rothschilds as villains

The Rothschilds get mentioned in many threads, where it’s more or less taken for granted that they are the arch villains of history. Rather than derail those threads I’ve started this one about the Rothschilds in particular. What do we really know about the Rothschilds?

The Rothschild family is said to be at the centre of a vast, centuries-old conspiracy to dominate the world. These views are encouraged by a wide range of conspiracy writers such as David Icke, who has even coined the phrase ‘Rothschild Zionist’ to describe them. Bizarrely, they are popular with an unlikely alliance of otherwise opposing interests, including fundamentalist Christians, the far Right, neo Nazis and a wide variety of Muslim groups. They tend to agree on the basic evidence for the theory, even if they attribute very different messages and objectives.

How true is this theory? Just because a charge is often repeated doesn’t make it true. So much of the evidence presented by Icke and the rest is given simply to suggest that someone is related to, or an associate of, the Rothschild family. But that’s just a family tree, not actual evidence of wrongdoing. Is there any primary source evidence one way or the other?

Surprisingly, there is.

For the first 100 years the Rothschilds were a family of prolific letter writers. They operated one of the world's first international finance operations in the days before phone, email etc. As a result they were obliged to share everything in writing or they simply couldn’t function.

Enormous quantities of these original documents have recently become accessible to scholars. Ironically, the actions and motives of the Rothschilds, who were previously naturally secretive, are now among the best documented of any 19th century financiers.

Remarkably, neither David Icke nor any other conspiracy writer seems to have examined these primary source documents. Instead we have to turn to Neal Ferguson, a leading historian, who has accessed many of these documents for the first time in writing his book: ‘The House of Rothschild’, which I recommend reading.

The documents were private and never intended to be read outside the family. They reveal embarrassing family quarrels as well as business secrets. If there are secrets to be discovered, we should find them here. For fear of interception in the post, many of them were written in code or in an obscure Frankfurt Judengasse dialect, which was and is unreadable to most people. Beyond all reasonable doubt, they tell the true story of the Rothschild rise from obscurity to success, as well as giving clues to their subsequent decline.

2. Primary source evidence

So do the documents give any evidence to support a conspiracy theory? The short answer is an emphatic ‘no’. There isn’t a single reference to anything that fits with Icke’s theories, or that of any other conspiracy writer.

The documents show how one deal led to another, and especially how Nathan Rothschild (the undoubted financial genius) in effect invented the modern bond trading market. From 1815 to 1848 the Rothschilds held a greater percentage of the world bond market than anyone, until the competition finally began to close in on them. They were more influential at a government level than any financier before or since, especially through their association with Metternich at the Austrian court. However, none of this shows anything more than you would expect from a successful finance operation of this type. They did not dictate government policy, although they sometimes influenced it. Their principle influence was to encourage peace because, after 1815, their principle business lay in bond trading rather than loans and war tends to disrupt bond markets. (They also played a key role in financing the abolition of slavery by Britain in 1833.)

But is it not the case that the Rothschilds have condemned themselves by their own words? There are so many dramatic quotes repeated across innumerable websites. Here are some popular examples:

‘I care not what puppet is placed on the throne of England to rule the empire on which the sun never sets. The man who controls Britain’s money supply controls the British Empire, and I control the money supply.’ - Attributed to Nathan Rothschild.

“The few who understand the system will either be so interested in its profits or be so dependent upon its favours that there will be no opposition from that class, while on the other hand, the great body of people, mentally incapable of comprehending the tremendous advantage that capital derives from the system, will bear its burdens without complaint, and perhaps without even suspecting that the system is inimical to their interests.” – Attributed to Rothschild letters.

“Permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws!” - Attributed to Mayer Amschel Rothschild.

All of these are fabricated. None of them can be traced back to the claimed source. Like a broken isnad, their point of origin always lies only in some anti Rothschild tract, whether from the 19th century or more recently. It’s exceptional. I’ve never come across any other figures in history with such an amazing quantity of fabricated material surrounding them, all of it defamatory.

3. The real Rothschilds

Based on these documents, Neal Ferguson is able to construct a good account of the history of the Rothschilds down to 1848 and their near obliteration in the Year of Revolutions. He finds that the whole early narrative of the anti Rothschild myth is without foundation. Ferguson’s fact-supported biography contradicts most of what can be found on conspiracy sites.

In summary – there is a complete lack of primary source evidence to convict the 19th century Rothschilds of anything other than being very good at their job. If anyone else has such evidence perhaps they could share it?
