Asalaam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I'm an 18 year old student who has been looking for a job for around 3 years. Only this year Alhumdulillah have I received interview requests and job offers. I received a offer from Mcdonalds and a 5 star Hotel in Melbourne City, which has good money. But my friends, both these jobs consist of haraam items. Both sell Pork/Bacon, both sell Haraam meat, and the Hotel serves alcohol to its customers. My dear friends, I've left Mcdonalds and accepted the offer at the Hotel as a Food and Beverage Attendant, but only today have I realised that this job asks me to serve Haraam food and Alcohol to customers.
I don't know what to do, after so much struggle Alhumdulillah have I got this job.
But I also have realised that how can we escape this? In today's world there is going to be something haram somewhere. I was reading an article on Haraam jobs, and it named some jobs as haraam which was so surprising such as a Civil Engineer because they design Banks, Bars and Houses where Alcoholics or Drugs maybe used. Or just even someone who sells Fruit, he might sell to a gambler or to a thief who has bought the fruit from haraam money and now me the Fruit seller is receiving that haraam money. Doesn't money just circulate around the world, a gambler might deposit his money in the bank, he then withdraws and buys from me Fruit, I receive haraam money, I then use this money somewhere else, isn't it all haraam? Can we escape!?!

I am not drinking the alcohol myself or consuming any swine, my job is to simply put drinks which are pre ordered by customers on their tables thats it. I'm not encouraging anyone to drink, just quietly doing my job.
My friends if you can link any verses from Quran or any Hadith that will be helpful.

Thanks so much for reading, may Allah bless us and shower mercy upon all of us

Also my friends, this hotel is more of a MEMBERSHIP CLUB. People pay $1000 per year to use the establishments facilities such as GYM, DINING, ACCOMMODATION ETC. I assume that their money is primarily earned from these $1000 membership fees and not alcohol.
Allah knows best, may my creator forgive me.

Is it possible that you can start looking for another job? Even to serve alcohol or to give it to people, is haraam for you.

Being civil engineer is not inherently haraam. It depends how you use your degree. Many civil engineers will never design a bar throughout their entire career. Selling to somebody who pays you with haraam money and you don't know, is not haraam.

However, the hadeeth specifically mention alcohol being haraam, from so many facets.

You should start looking for another suitable job, and have the intention to leave this one as soon as you can get another one. May Allah help you and make it easy for you and reward you for your concern about this matter, ameen.

Salaams.

I am not an aalim or a mufti, but if I was in your position, I would do my best to look for another job, that did not include alcohol or bars. Perhaps an administrative assistant or something different? I don't know what your skill set is and I don't know what experience you have in other sectors.

Though I understand where you are coming from, I know a whole heap of Muslims who work at supermarkets either as cashiers or stock assistants and the supermarkets sell both haraam animals and alcohol. That would technically put them in the same predicament as you. Likewise the same could be said for Muslims who work in restaurants as waiting staff. It's good that you have asked this question as I too would like to know what others will advise you.

My brother had the same kind of issue working for a bank as they deal with interest. What the local imam told him was carry on doing the job for now, but genuinely look for another job. Any money you make from the bank job should only be used for paying bills and not on food. Mashallah my brother got another job with the local authority within a month and that was not banking related and all was good.

If I were you, I would really look for another job. There are plenty of jobs out there that are completely halal, so it is not worth it to keep your current job and continue sinning.
There is a website that can help you with your search called Work Halal. (I can't post the link because I am new here, but you can Google it.)

I hope everything will work out okay. Allah (SWT) knows best.

My friends thank you so much for your replies!
Would neglecting to go near the alcohol and just keep serving the food be an option?

Would that really be an option? If your job description states you have to serve food and drink, you will have to, otherwise you may end up getting sacked for not doing your job.

You could always have a word with your manager/boss and explain that as a Muslim you can't serve alcohol, but the chances are that he might tell you to look for another job.

Good luck though.

If you are serving pork to your customers, it is also haraam.

Without a doubt. Also, if they serve cow/chicken and it is not slaughtered Islamically, would that also put you in a compromising situation?

Hope the job search is going OK.
