We were sent as a sign/punishment for a people.

We were also sent as a healing/blessing.

What are we?

Note: only the first example is mentioned in the Qur'an.

I'm not sure mine are so accurate now... perhaps brother ibnAdam's answer was more accurate than the one I had in mind.

A couple of clues:

For the first one, the healing/blessing was for a Prophet.

In the second one, it should perhaps say: People went astray using something resembling me

The answer I had in mind was... locusts:

So We sent on them: the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the blood (as a succession of) manifest signs, yet they remained arrogant, and they were of those people who were Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners). [Al-A'raf: 133]

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When the Prophet Job (Aiyub) was taking a bath naked, golden locusts began to fall on him. Job started collecting them in his clothes. His Lord addressed him, 'O Job! Haven't I given you enough so that you are not in need of them.' Job replied, 'Yes!' By Your Honor (power)! But I cannot dispense with Your Blessings.' "
Sahih al-Bukhari Book 5, Hadith 31

No, it was fun! And I don't know about other people, but I didn't know about the golden locusts… so it was a learning experience. (smile) actually, I had to think and research a bit to find possible solutions, so the whole exercise was a form of worship, I think. Thank you!

I was using the following:

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, "The wind is the Blessing of Allah. Sometimes it brings His Mercy and sometimes it brings His Chastisement. When you experience it, do not revile it but beg of Allah its good; and seek Allah's Refuge against its evil."

[Abu Dawud with good Isnad].

Salamah's version has: It is Allah's mercy; it (sometimes) brings blessing and (sometimes) brings punishment. So when you see it, do not revile it, but ask Allah for some of its good, and seek refuge in Allah from its evil.

Then when We decreed death for him [Sulaiman], nothing informed them (jinn) of his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his stick. It is reported in a Hadith that Rasulullah :saws: said:

The best water on the face of the earth is the water of Zamzam; it is a kind of food and a healing from sickness. (Narrated by Tabrani in Mu'jamul Kabeer)

It was hidden for a long time after the death of Isma'il :as: until Allah :swt: guided 'AbdulMuttalib (the Prophet's grandfather) to the location of the well through dreams. He dug the well once again and Zamzam continues to flow since then by the permission of Allah :swt:.

Jazaakumullah khayr: for all the good questions and the beneficial information.

Also to add, with regards to zamzam being a blessing/blessed:

It was reported in Saheeh Muslim that the Prophet :saws: said to Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him), who had stayed near the Ka’bah and its coverings for forty days and nights with no food or drink other than (Zamzam): “How long have you been here?” Abu Dharr said: “I have been here for thirty days and nights.” The Prophet :saws: said, “Who has been feeding you?” He said, “I have had nothing but Zamzam water, and I have gotten so fat that I have folds of fat on my stomach. I do not feel any of the tiredness or weakness of hunger and I have not become thin.” The Prophet :saws: said: “Verily, it is blessed, it is food that nourishes.” (Narrated by Imaam Muslim, 2473).

http://islamqa.info/en/6383

According to the hadeeth of Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him), the Prophet :saws: said concerning the water of Zamzam, “It is a blessing, and it is food that satisfies.” (Reported by Muslim, 4/1922). Al-Tayaalisi (61) added, in a version that he narrated: “and a cure for the sick.” i.e., drinking the water of Zamzam means that a person does not need to eat, and it will cure his sickness – but this is when he drinks it with faith and sincerity, as proven in the hadeeth of Abu Dharr al-Ghifaari who stayed in Makkah for a month without any nourishment except Zamzam water.

I am mentioned as an example in a verse mentioning Jannah
Verily, those who belie Our Ayat and treat them with arrogance, for them the gates of heaven will not be opened, and they will not enter Paradise until the camel goes through the eye of the needle. Thus do We recompense the Mujrimun. [Al-A'raf 40]

I am mentioned as an example in a passage mentioning the Hellfire
Verily, it (Hell) throws sparks (huge) as Al-Qasr (a fort or a huge log of wood), As if they were yellow camels or bundles of ropes. [-Al-Mursalat: 32-33]

Do they not look at the camels, how they are created? [Al-Ghashiyah: 17]

He said: "Here is a she-camel: it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day should seize you." [Ash-Shu'ara: 155-156]

I was a means to an act of worship
And proclaim to mankind the Hajj (pilgrimage). They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Hajj ). [Al-Hajj: 27]

Is it the Ark of the Covenant?

And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, Allah has sent to you Saul as a king." They said, "How can he have kingship over us while we are more worthy of kingship than him and he has not been given any measure of wealth?" He said, "Indeed, Allah has chosen him over you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. And Allah gives His sovereignty to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing [in favor] and Knowing."

And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, a sign of his kingship is that the chest will come to you in which is assurance from your Lord and a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron had left, carried by the angels. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers."

Yes. It's called "At Tabut"

Their Prophet then proclaimed, "The sign of the blessings of Talut's kingship over you is that Allah will give you back the Tabut (wooden box) that has been taken from you.'' Allah said:

﴿فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ﴾

(wherein is Sakinah from your Lord) meaning, peace (or grace) and reassurance. `Abdur-Razzaq stated that Qatadah said:

﴿فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ﴾

(wherein is Sakinah) means grace. In addition, Ar-Rabi` said that Sakinah means mercy. This is also the meaning given by Ibn `Abbas, as Al-`Awfi narrated.

Allah then said:

﴿وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَى وَءَالُ هَـرُونَ﴾

(...and a remnant of that which Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) left behind,)

Ibn Jarir related that Ibn `Abbas said about this Ayah:

﴿وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَى وَءَالُ هَـرُونَ﴾

(...and a remnant of that which Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) left behind, ) Meaning, Moses' staff and the remnants of the Tablets. This is the same Tafsir of Qatadah, As-Suddi, Ar-Rabi` bin Anas and `Ikrimah, who added, "And also the Torah.'' `Abdur-Razzaq said that he asked Ath-Thawri about the meaning of,

﴿وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَى وَءَالُ هَـرُونَ﴾

(...and a remnant of that which Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) left behind,)

Ath-Thawri said, "Some said that it contained a pot of manna and the remnants of the Tablets, while some others said that it contained (Moses') staff and two shoes (and refer to 20:12).''

Allah then said:

﴿تَحْمِلُهُ الْمَلَـئِكَةُ﴾

(...carried by the angels.)

Ibn Jurayj stated that Ibn `Abbas said, "The angels came down while carrying the Tabut between the sky and the earth, until they placed it before Talut while the people were watching.'' As-Suddi said, "The Tabut was brought to Talut's house, so the people believed in the prophethood of Sham`un (Simeon) and obeyed Talut''

The Prophet then said:

﴿إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لأَيَةً لَّكُمْ﴾

(Verily, in this is a sign for you) testifying to my truth in what I was sent with, my prophethood, and my command to you to obey Talut,

﴿إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ﴾

(if you are indeed believers. ) in Allah and the Hereafter.'

Assalaamu alaikum,

I'm not sure of my answer. The extra explanation throws me off a bit. And the "general category" makes me wonder, too.

Could it be the Ka'bah?

1) It is mentioned twice in the Quran by this specific name.

2) It was built by the Prophet Adam (AS) and then forgotten and buried at some time, to be rediscovered when the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) decided to build there with his son Isma'il (AS).

3) Ibrahim and his son (AS) say this dua' when rebuilding : رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّآ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُTranslation

And (remember) when Ibrâhim (Abraham) and (his son) Ismâ'il (Ishmael)(peace be upon them) were raising the foundations of the House (the Ka'bah at Makkah), (saying),

“Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Indeed! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.”

Transliteration

rabbanaa taqabbal minnaa innaka antas-samee‛ul-‛aleem

Sources: Surah Al-Baqarah (2:127)
- See more at: http://duas.com/dua/414/dua-of-ibrah....uKbKlCQu.dpuf

This du'a is in the Qur'an, so surely it is well known. But perhaps there is another du'a which you were thinking of?

4) The Muslims were forbidden from making Hajj one year by the Meccans at the time of the treaty of Hudaybiyyah.

Anyway, thank you for the riddle. (smile) It was instructive, even if I am incorrect.

You could use a Qur'an search website like Qur'an.com to search for key words in the questions and see if you can build towards something that seems to fit. Not always easy though!

I think my clues may have been slightly off...

I was thinking of .....

Fish

I was once forgotten.
And when Moses said unto his servant: I will not give up until I reach the point where the two rivers meet, though I march on for ages.
And when they reached the point where the two met, they forgot their fish, and it took its way into the waters, being free.
And when they had gone further, he said to his servant: Bring us our breakfast. Verily we have found fatigue in this our journey.
He said: Did you see, when we took refuge on the rock, and I forgot the fish - and none but Satan caused me to forget to mention it - it took its way into the waters by a marvel. (18:60-63)

I was once forbidden.
And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient. (7:163)

A prophet associated with me made a well known dua.
And [mention] Dhu'n-Nun, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."
So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers. (21:87-88)

[MAD][/MAD]Arabic transliteration of du'aa: Laa ilaaha illaa anta sub'haanaka innee kuntu minadh-dhaalimeen.

The prophet associated with the thing in question, is once referred to in the Qur'an in relation to this thing.
Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed.
Had not a Grace from his Lord reached him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.
But his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous. (68:48-50)

We are two things.
We were sent down to a people.
That people said they could not endure us.

What are we?

^ :jz: for those good guesses. Not quite what I was thinking of though. I think my questions are too general, so will add, firstly:

We are mentioned in the Qur'an.
We are always mentioned together.
That people asked their prophet to request something inferior to us instead.

Good try, but not what I had in mind...

The answer is/are actual physical things, rather than concepts/virtues.

And they're not people, which is in the "Who am I?" thread...

Translation of Qur'anic verses addressed to that people, the Children of Israil:

And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not - but they were [only] wronging themselves. (Qur'an 2:57)

And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allah [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing. (2:61)

Have you not considered, [O Muhammad], how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?
Did He not make their plan into misguidance?
And He sent against them birds in flocks,
Striking them with stones of hard clay,
And He made them like eaten straw. (Surat al Fil)

He said: "Take four birds, then cause them to incline towards you (then slaughter them, cut them into pieces), and then put a portion of them on every hill, and call them, they will come to you in haste. I am mentioned in the Qur’aan.

A type of me was once forbidden.
A type of me is blessed.
A type of me is cursed.
I am a dwelling place.
I have been a comfort.
A voice has come from me.
An oath of allegiance was made near me.
I prostrate.
I am an example in parables.

What am I?
