Course Description:

Hadith scholarship has historically been one of the most robust areas of Islamic Scholarship. From preservation, classification, to interpretation, only scholars of the highest rank could approach hadith. However, hadith have been the subject of most misconceptions and misunderstandings in our times. From outright rejection as being false or unreliable to gross misinterpretations by novices, our lack of understanding of hadith endangers our understanding of Islam itself, and belittles the sophistication and rigor that generations of hadith specialists introduced to the tradition.

This module introduces the discipline of Hadith Methodology as understood by the muhaditheen (hadith specialists) and addresses misconceptions and objections in light of this understanding. It gives an overview of the classification of hadith, and discusses whether our understanding of Islam should be based just on sahih hadith, whether dhaeef hadith are forged and anything said on their basis must be shunned, the place of the Six Books (sihah sitta) in the hadith corpus and whether a hadith that is not in the sahih of Bukhari or Muslim ever be reliable. It also discusses the preservation of hadith and the history of forgeries and fabrications, why hadith were not written earlier and whether this threatens their authenticity.
