[Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.
Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You]." # Quran 7:16-17

"When any human being is born, Satan pinches the body with his two fingers, except 'Isa, the son of Maryam, whom Satan tried to pinch but failed, for he touched the placenta instead".
Sahih Bukhari 4:506

So it is safe to deduce from the above ayah and hadith that shaitaan is to us an avowed enemy…also can we safely deduce from the hadith that we are all influenced by shaitaan…namely the deadly sins
Lust
Gluttony
Sloth
Greed
Wrath
Envy
Pride

Are we all influenced by these sins, maybe even a little bit? Is this the reason we are told that Jihad un nafs is the ‘Greater Jihad’ To understand better ‘nafs’ has two meanings: ie power of anger and lust and and the second meaning of nafs is the soul ie. known as the ‘soul that enjoins evil’ (al-nafs al-ammara bi al-su)
Allah says: Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him? #Quran 25:43…
…but is jihad un nafs really more important or greater than jihad fi sabilillah?...

We are constantly faced with a struggle, afterall, we have all been touched by shaitaan, the 1st pinch…so its safe to say we have always been in this fight, and because the soul has a natural disposition to lean towards evil, we have to constantly emerge the victor, shaitaan is afterall our avowed enemy, right?
So we struggle and we fight those deadly sins that if given a chance will drag us down into the depths of the fire, and so everyday becomes a struggle against our carnal self…
it was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), said to his companions when they returned from a military campaign, “We have come back from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad.” They said, “Is there any greater jihad than jihad against the kufar?” he said, “Yes, jihad al-nafs (jihad against the self).”
This hadith is a weak narration (It does not appear in any of the six sahih sittah)
And lets say its not weak for all those that might argue ….The Messenger came back from a military campaign ie. Battle of Badr or Tabuk etc etc, he did not use it to abrogate or invalidate Jihad!!!

So is it also safe to say man that fights on the battlefield is also fighting these battles internally? Are those men of a different caliber? Are they more special than you or I?
Well yes and no! They have accepted and welcomed al walaa wal baraa into their lives which means ‘love what Allah loves, hate what Allah hates, and they took it to the next level…showing and expressing it outwardly.
And no, because every man fights his demons, whichever they are…
"But as for he who feared the standing before his Lord and restrained the soul from [his] desire, then indeed, Paradise will be his refuge." [Al-Qur'an 79:40-41]

You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient. (Quran 3:110)

…The best nation produced for mankind…what an honor…Allah calls this Ummah the best nation ever produced, and exactly what have we done to uphold that honour bestowed on us?
The minute Jihad fi sabilillah is mentioned, we usher in the Greater Jihad is ‘jihad un nafs’ almost like robots.
So again we fall victim to our carnal nafs, the naf of ‘love for dunya’ at the same time professing our love for Allah…

What is wrong with this Ummah, when the kufar lays their hands on your parents, wives, daughters and sons….Do you really not feel brotherhood? Do you really not cry in total despair?

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ï·º) was asked, "Which deed is the best?" He (ï·º) replied, "Faith in Allah and His Messenger." He (ï·º) was asked, "What is next?" He (ï·º) replied, "Jihad (holy fighting) in the Cause of Allah." Then he was asked: "What is after that (in goodness)?" He (ï·º) replied, "Hajj Mabrur (which is accepted by Allah)." # [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Book 12, Hadith 1 Book of Jihad
Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I asked the Messenger of Allah (ï·º): "Which action is dearest to Allah?" He (ï·º) replied, "Performing As-Salat (the prayer) at its earliest fixed time." I asked, "What is next (in goodness)?" He (ï·º) said, "Kindness towards parents." I asked, "What is next (in goodness)?" He (ï·º) said, "To participate in Jihad in the Cause of Allah." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Book 12, Hadith 2 Book of Jihad

We can go back and forth on this subject, maybe one thing that we will agree on is that shaitaan is our AVOWED enemy and that we all have some form of struggle, be us on our thrones at home or on the battlefield

Narrated Abu Said Khudri RadhiAllahu anhu, somebody asked, "O Allah's Messenger Salallahu-alaihiwasallam! Who is the best among the people?" Allah's Messenger Salallahu-alaihiwasallam replied, "A believer who performs Jihad with his life and wealth." They asked, "Who is next?" He replied, "A believer who stays in one of the mountain paths worshipping Allah and leaving the people safe from his mischief." Sahih Bukhari, (p391, vol.1).
"Allah has preferred in grades those who strive hard and fight with their wealth and lives above those who sit (at home). Unto each, Allah has promised good (Paradise), but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight above those who sit (at home) by a huge reward." #Quran 4:95

Conclusion: The very least we can do is make duah for our UNSUNG hero’s, may Allah accept them among the shuhadah –Ameen Allahuma Ameen…If the kufar can honor their hero’s why can’t we????
