According to certain newspapers it has been shot down due to border violation to Turkey. The Russian pilot has been warned by the Turkish pilot ten times within five minutes, however he didn't respond, so they shot him because he was in the airspace of Turkey.

Putin: Downing of Russian jet over Syria stab in the back by terrorist accomplices

Putin said the plane was hit by a Turkish warplane as it was traveling at an altitude of 6000 meters about a kilometer from the Turkish border. It was hit by an air-to-air missile launched by a Turkish F-16 jet. The crash site is four kilometers from the border. The plane posed no threat to Turkish national security, he stressed.
Putin said the plane was targeting terrorist targets in the Latakia province of Syria, many of whom came from Russia.

Russia has for a long time been aware of oil going from Syria under the control of terrorists to Turkey, Putin said. The money finances terrorist groups.
IS has big money, hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars, from selling oil. In addition they are protected by the military of an entire nation. One can understand why they are acting so boldly and blatantly. Why they kill people in such atrocious ways. Why they commit terrorist acts across the world, including in the heart of Europe,” the Russian leader said.

....Oh I see, so that's how ISIS has been getting funds to support their crimes and giving bad name to Islam....Interesting! No wonder why Turkey is shooting down Russian planes.

Multiple provocations by russian airplanes toward not only Turkey airspace but also toward other NATO countries during recent monthes makes me think that the goal was not only to force Turkey to shutdown the airplane but also to prepare other NATO countries to support Turkey.
There is a version that the goal is to bring in some confusion before official publication of report about MH17 downing upcoming next days. That report is going to accuse Russia in supporting terrorism.
'Stab in the back' agenda is a preventive accusation of NATO in supporting terrorism.

And both sides are right at some point, both are guilty one or another way in the growing of terrorism.
Hope all this mess and scandals will help to reveal the true instead of starting the WW3...

Russia has told quite openly that their the first target in Syria isn´t ISIS but those groups whose are against Assad.

Also Russia is well-known that it does not respect borders with other countries. Because of this I wasn´t any syrprise something like this will happening.
