Narrated in Saheeh Bukhaaree from Awf bin Maalik who said that:
“I went to the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) during the Ghazwa of Tabuk while he was sitting in a leather tent.

He (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

‘Count six signs that indicate the approach of the Hour: my death, the conquest of Jerusalem, a plague that will afflict you (and kill you in great numbers) as the plague that afflicts sheep, the increase of wealth to such an extent that even if one is given one hundred Dinars, he will not be satisfied; then an affliction which no Arab house will escape, and then a truce between you and Bani al-Asfar (i.e. the Byzantines) who will betray you and attack you under eighty objectives. Under each objective will be twelve thousand soldiers.’
The same hadeeth is narrated in Aboo Dawood with some different words.

The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“You will make peace with the People of Rome and then you and they together will combat an enemy. You will be victorious in that battle. After that, all of you will stay at a pasture; at that time a person from among the People of the Cross will raise a cross, then a Muslim will get angry and rise to him and push him away. Thereafter, all the People of Rome will get together and attack you under eighty flags…”
[Aboo Dawood]
Imaam Muslim narrates from Aboo Hurayrah, reporting Allaah’s Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying:

“The Last Hour would not come until the Romans would land at al-A'maq or in Daabiq. An army consisting of the best (soldiers) of the people of the earth at that time will come from Madeenah (to counteract them). When they will arrange themselves in ranks, the Romans would say: ‘Do not stand between us and those (Muslims) who took prisoners from amongst us. Let us fight with them’; and the Muslims would say: ‘Nay, by Allaah, we would never get aside from you and from our brethren that you may fight them.’ They will then fight and a third (part) of the army would run away, whom Allaah will never forgive. A third (part of the army), which would be constituted of excellent martyrs in Allaah’s eye, would be killed and the third, who would never be put to trial, would win and they would be conquerors of Constantinople. And as they would be busy in distributing the spoils of war (amongst themselves) after hanging their swords by the olive trees, the Satan would cry: ‘The Dajjaal has taken your place among your family.’ They would then come out, but it would be of no avail. And when they would come to Syria, he would come out while they would be still preparing themselves for battle, drawing up the ranks. Certainly, the time of prayer shall come and then Jesus (peace be upon him) son of Mary would descend and would lead them in prayer. When the enemy of Allaah would see him, he would (disappear) just as the salt dissolves itself in water, and if he (Jesus) were not to confront him at all, even then it would dissolve completely; but Allaah would kill him by his (Jesus’s) hand and he would show them his blood on his lance (the lance of Jesus Christ).”
[Reported by Imaam Muslim]
Imaam Ibn al-Muneer said:

“Till this time the incident of gathering and attacking Rome in this huge number of soldiers has not happened yet. This matter has not taken place yet. In this hadeeth there are glad tidings and warning at the same time to the Muslims. This hadeeth also proves that the result will be in favor of the Muslims and the Muslim army will be much greater than it is now.”
Conquest of Constantinople

The following authentic hadeeth about the conquest of Constantinople is usually interpreted to refer to the conquest that already took place at the hand of Muhammad (Mehmed) Fatih (may Allaah be well-pleased with him). However, in the light of the Qur’aan and other hadeeths, this narration has also received another interpretation which places its occurrence in the future.
The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Lataftahanna al-Qustantiniyya wa lani`ma al-amiru amiruha wa lani`ma
al-jayshu dhalika al-jaysh.”

“Verily, you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will that leader be, and what a wonderful army will that army be!”
Narrated from Bishr al-Khath’amee or al-Ghanawee by:
Ahmad, al-Musnad(14:331, no. 18859) [saheeh chain according to Hamza al-Zayn]; al-Haakim, al-Mustadrak4:421-422 [saheeh according to him and al-Dhahaabee concurred]; al-Tabaranee, al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer (2:38, no. 1216) [saheeh chain according to al-Haythamee (6:218-219)]; al-Bukhaaree, al-Tarikh al-Kabeer (2:81) and al-Sagheer(1:306); Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, al-Isti’ab (8:170) [hasan chain according to him]; al-Suyootee, al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer [saheeh according to him]

Some of the people of knowledge in our time said: This is a reference to one of the battles to be waged by al-Mahdee (peace be upon him) and his army after the descent of ‘Eesa (peace be upon him).

The Latter-Day sequence of events that emerges from the reports is thus:
1- The conclusion of all the “minor signs of the Hour.” These signs are between 65 and 100 signs depending on the strength of the reports.
2- The truce and joint Christian-Muslim campaign against a common enemy – this is referred to as the “Battle Between the Two Great Armies” or Armageddon (at the conclusion of which all war technology shall become unusable) – followed by a non-Muslim vs. Muslim war – this is called the “Great Slaughter” (al-Malhama al-Kubra) – as stated in the following hadeeth:
“You will make a firm truce with the al-Room (Romans) until you and they wage a campaign against an enemy that is attacking them. You will be granted victory and great spoils. Then you will alight in a plain surrounded by hills. There, someone among the Christians shall say: ‘The Cross has overcome!’ whereupon someone among the Muslims shall say: ‘Nay, Allaah has overcome!’ and shall go and break the cross. The Christians shall kill him, then the Muslims shall take up their arms and the two sides shall fall upon each other. Allaah shall grant martyrdom to that group of Muslims. After that the Christians shall say to their leader: ‘We shall relieve you of the Arabs,’ and they shall gather up for the great battle (al-Malhama). They shall come to you under eighty flags, each flag gathering 12,000 troops.” [= approx. 1 million]
Narrated with sound chains from Dhu Mikhbar al-Najashee by Aboo Dawood, Ahmad, Ibn Maajah, Ibn Hibban, and al-Haakim who declared it saheeh and al-Dhahaabee concurred. See Shaykh Shu’ayb Arna’ut’s documentation of this hadeeth in his edition of Saheeh Ibn Hibban (15:101-103, no. 6708-6709).
3- The Muslims shall pledge their loyalty to the Prophet’s descendent Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allaah al-Mahdee between the Corner of the Black Stone and Ibrahim’s station, against his will. He shall then come to Madeenah. At that time the Anti-Christ (al-Maseeh al-Dajjaal) shall come out.
4- The non-Muslim army shall be the aggressor, and they will come to a place called al-A’maq or Daabiq in ash-Shaam as stated in Saheeh Muslim. During that time a large number of the non-Muslims shall defect and enter Islaam.
5- Between the time of the initial non-Muslim treachery and their coming out to Daabiq, the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said that nine months will elapse, during which the Mahdee will wage two campaigns initiated by the Dajjaal, one against the Arabs, who shall not recognize him, and one against the Persians of Khurasan (i.e. Iran) that shall not recognize him. Both campaigns are mentioned in Saheeh Muslim.

Included in the former group will be all the so-called followers of “Qur’an-only”, who will reject the Mahdee on the pretext that he is not mentioned in the Qur’aan. Among the latter group will be all the so-called lovers of Ahl al-Bayt, who will reject the Mahdee on the pretext that he is not their disappeared twelfth Imaam, al-‘Askaree, whose reappearance they presently await.
6- Al-Mahdee will come out of Madeenah at the head of a huge army to face al-Dajjaal and the Christians for the Great Slaughter. This shall take place in Shaam.
7- The Mahdee will find himself surrounded by the armies of the Dajjaal. ‘Eesa shall descend, lead the Muslim armies out, and kill the Dajjaal. The rest of the Muslim campaigns shall remove all trace of unbelief from the face of the earth.
8- At this time, Constantinople shall be taken by peaceful means. The army that will conquer it shall consist in seventy thousand of the Banu Ishaaq, and their sole weapons will be the Shahaadah and Takbeer, as stated in Saheeh Muslim. This is the event referred to in the hadeeth cited initially.
9- The Mahdee shall defeat the following in rapid succession: the last third of the non-Muslims from people of the Book (two thirds having perished at Armageddon); the “Turks” – also called “Khawz and Kirman” in the hadeeth – whose features in the hadeeth are applicable to both Central and Far-Eastern Asians; Gog and Magog.
10- Other major signs follow before the rising of the Hour, such as the coming out of the Beast and the rising of the Sun in the West, at which time the gate of repentance shall be closed shut forever.
And Allaah knows best.
