There is a stigma that has been attached to Ulama that they are good for nothing and, Alhamdulillah, many see it slowly moving away but it is still quite prevalent some of our communities.
It's sad that we have this mentality, where we actually consider scholars of Islam to be of less value; the very same people who strive from a young age to understand and implement Islam completely, in order for us to be able to practice our religion correct. These are the same people who scarified hours of enjoyment for hours of reading and studying. We anticipate our holidays; they anticipated lessons and Duroos.
Yet, when they finish the course, which is just as rigorous as any other academic studies at university level, they are looked down upon by the community, automatically assumed to be of no use, branded as people who had no opportunity to take up secular education, and so turned towards deen.
Another topic and another misconception is that those children who aren't able to do well at school or college are shifted to becoming Alim.
Know, it takes more than just a sharp brain to study this knowledge of I'lm and Allah only chooses from his servants whom He wants to inherit it from the Prophets (peace be upon them). Ulama are great giants, both in history and contemporary. We've had great Ulama, who could've been the best in any secular field yet Allah choose them for the work of deen.
Next time you look down upon an Alim, know he spent more time reading the speech of Allah, studying it and reading the ahadeeth than you and I. Know, Allah has chosen him for a great rank and know, he could be the next Imam Bukhari or Jalaluddin Rumi or Imam Nawawi or Imam Tahawi or Imam Abu Hanifah in several years.
