View Full Version : David Cameron announces fund to teach Muslim women English

The Prime Minister has announced a £20m fund to teach Muslim women in the UK to speak English in order to tackle segregation and help them resist the lure of extremism.

While there was no “causal connection” between poor English and extremism, language lessons would make communities “more resilient”, Mr Cameron said.

The PM also suggested failing to learn English could affect people on spousal visas who wanted to settle in the UK.

The government says 22% of Muslim women living in England speak little or no English – a factor it argues is contributing to their isolation.

Segregation, the prime minister says, is allowing “appalling practices” such as female genital mutilation and forced marriage to exist, and increasing vulnerability to recruitment by ISIS.

He is also announcing a review of the role of Britain’s religious councils, including Sharia courts, in an effort to confront men who exert “damaging control over their wives, sisters and daughters”.

This is a good thing, right?

Because Muslim women will understand English and they will be able to communicate with Western peeps thus they don't have the "KILL THE KAFIR!!!!" type of mood, eh?

I think it undermines the efforts already made in the Muslim community.

Muslim ladies that did not speak English a decade ago, now at least understand English even if they are not confident in speaking it.

Personally speaking.

...there were even education groups set up specifically for the demographic..

I don't know what happened to them... Although I have been told that David was in part responsible for there closing the first time round..

You will have to do your own research.

Secondly, most of my community are now third generation British immigrants..

So the 22% will decrease on its own anyway.

There is always an influx of Muslim immigrants apparently that enables him to make such comments..

But historically speaking they should integrate just fine.

Unless there is some other problem.

...by some strange coincidence the petition for denying trump entry into the UK is up for debate around the same time.

Fantastic.

Although I admit I am referencing several different sources of information, none of which I have verified.

But I guess that's what a forum is for.

..maybe its a women's rights issue.

This is an attack on Islam, but in this case it's targeting only women directly, and the muslim society as a whole indirectly. Look at their disgusting way of approaching muslim women. They want them to confront muslim men on matters that the government find to be bad. They didn't fail to mention genital mutilation and forced marriages, just to further boost their self-esteem, and making them feel civilized. These are the same people that let their women go out wearing bikinis on beaches, and don't forget the rampant cases of rapes, prostitution and pornogrophy filming. Instead of trying to deradicalize the noble muslim woman, how about investing money on saving their own women from the rapes, prostitution and the pornogrophy industry?

If women can speak and understand the language of the country they will live all their life, they can better also support studing and educating their children. As well, if its necessary, they can earn their own living. What if they will divorce or become widow - their family might live in other country and then they haven´t nobody to take care of their living.

As teacher of the language for immigrants (also for Muslim women) I have seen how many women wish to learn to understand the language and the country they now live - but many haven´t possibility to go to school because of the small kids in home.

One side effect also might be that they don´t listen more the radicals but it´s only a good thing - for them and to the whole Islamic community they are living.

I don't speak English in daily life, but I learned English because I wanted to able to communicate with international people. I came from Java nation-tribe, my parents spoke Javanese at home. But since I live in Sunda region I learned to speak Sundanese to make me could communicate better with local people who are not well in speak Indonesian.

Back to those Muslim women. If they live in Pakistan or Bangladesh, it's okay if they do not learn English. But they live in UK where local people speak English, not Urdu, Punjabi, or Bangla.

Unwillingness to learn local language show the attitude which they are not willing to interact with local people and become the part of local society. Basically, if an immigrant was willing to become the part of society in his/her new home, then he/she would be enthusiast to learn local language.

David Cameron backs bans on Muslim face veils as Tories plan crackdown on gender segregation
Muslim women can be banned from wearing veils in schools, courts and other British institutions, David Cameron has said. The Prime Minister said that he will give his backing to public authorities that put in place “proper and sensible” rules to ban women from wearing face veils in comments which will reignite debates.
It comes as the Government prepare to announce a series of measures designed to stop British Muslims becoming radicalised and traveling to the Middle East to join terrorist groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil).

"to stop British Muslims becoming radicalised and traveling to the Middle East to join terrorist groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil)"

How they can stop people to travel? Do they take passports away from the British Muslims? Strange this world is today: D.Trump would like to keep Muslims out from the USA and D.Cameron would like to keep Muslims inside of the UK. Without niqabs but speaking good English.

Telegraph made article on it now:

Cameron's proposals for Muslim women are dangerous, dog-whistling nonsense
The issue of learning English for new migrants, on the other hand, has long been a concern for campaigners. (Most Muslim women in the UK are not migrants, but never mind.) They point out that the latest measures will criminalise women, rather than assisting them, when in fact, massive cuts to local government funding has led to the closure of many of the very types of services designed to help migrant women learn English.A case in point is this report from Eaves, a front line women's charity which, until being forced to shut down recently, ran shelters for domestic violence victims. Contrary to stereotypes, they found that large proportions of migrant women on spousal visas are highly educated, often with impressive employment histories – but that Britain's professed agenda of encouraging integration actually conflicts with the regulations in place. That is: these women are keen to work and to learn or improve their English, but policy prevents them from doing so.
For instance, the report listed huge hurdles to English lessons, with either no free courses or free courses only available to those who could access public funds – which, as spouses on five years' visa probation, these women could not.

Most of the radicals and the terrorists were fluent in English especially the British radicals. However it would help people economically and socially if they learnt English including the polish, Slovaks and other migrants, not just Muslims.
