“I haven’t heard anything in its regard”
“I haven’t heard of it”
“I don’t have the courage to speak of it”
“I don’t issue rulings in it”
“I don’t answer this matter”
“I don’t have an answer”
“Ask someone else”
“Ask the scholars”
“I fear answering this question”
“It terrifies me”
“Its an unclear matter”
“Its an intricate topic”
“Its problematic”
“There is a difference of opinion”
“They've differed”
“I prefer to stay safe”
“I prefer well-being”
“Please relieve me of the question”

All of the statements which you read above were uttered by a particular man.

Do you know who he was?

He was amongst the most scholarly of men.

A man who’d committed to memory no less than 1 million Hadith.

He is the Imam of Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama’ah.

He is none other than Imam Ahmad Ibnu Hanbal.

His biography is an institute of lessons for the benefit of every student of knowledge, let alone the layman, which stresses the necessity of fearing Allah, the freezing at the limits, submissiveness and humility to the truth
.. and the courage to say:

“I don’t know”
