The abortion was performed after an asessment by the medical profession. In their opinion, termination of life above certain death or complete vegetative abnormality was preferred. This is allowed in Islam.

Ask Allah ta’ala for forgiveness, nevertheless.

And Allâh Ta’ala knows best

You're able to, then get the following book: Birth Control & Abortion in Islam, By Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari. It is an awesome read.

Scholars say abortion is not allowed unless the mother's life is in danger. If the baby isn't developing properly, that is not grounds for abortion. You should proceed with the pregnancy and if the child dies by itself then that is from Allah. If the child is born with a defect, that is also from Allah. Only Allah has the right to take life. You can't take a life except for qisas (punishment for some crime given by the court). Thus abortion would be wrong.Another reason doing abortion on the basis of the child not developing properly is wrong is that it's possible that the fetus starts developing normal later. At what stage you do abortion doesn't matter because the fetus has a life from day one. So it's not right to say one can do abortion before this many weeks but not after. At anytime abortion is a sin except in the specific situation (as stated by scholars). If the child was delivered with heart beating and then killed, that is even murder.

You have sinned imo. And therefore should repent and give recompense for killing by mistake.

And Allah knows best.

Even if they have sinned, can you provide Quran verses that indicate forgiveness with repentance? Allah is kind and merciful, right? I think abortion is wrong as well, but I also realize that in this broken world, sometimes we have to choose between two evils, or at least it seems that way. When stress and emotions get in the way, it can be so difficult to discern what is the right path to take.

I'm sure this couple is heartbroken, not only at the loss of their baby, but at the fact that they had choices to make about it. God have mercy.

Abortion is impermissible in Islam. It is an act that is abhorred. However if there is a valid reason then it may become permissible BEFORE FOUR months into the pregnancy.

Regardless of the reason it is impermissible to have an abortion after four months into the pregnancy. This is due to the fact that in Islam the soul of the child enters the fetus at that time. It will be like killing an innocent child. Therefore even if though there was a high possibility that the child would be deformed, it would still be impermissible.

Therefore you and your wife have made a grave error.

You should ask for forgiveness from Allah Ta'ala
