What would happen if someone that was Muslim wanted to be cremated? Just curious.

It's haraam, one would have to repent of such a statement, it was only an example regarding a man who feared for his sins so much and was forgiven for his fear of Allah and ignorant attempt, he was ignorant and unaware.
If someone said it and then repented of it, it may also have been an example for those who are incredulous to think, sort of like the comment of - be ye stones or iron, Allah can still ressurect you. But it is indeed forbidden and shouldn't be practised.

What if it was the rule of the country that you had to cremate?
I know for a fact the land in our cemetery, well the Muslim part, is not going to be extended and it is more or less full up. I wonder what they will propose?

Cremation: a Muslim can not bequeath things that are un Islamic at the time of death. His final wishes do not supersede or override the commands of the Shari'ah .
So, his heirs will be compelled to ignore his request of cremation and Bury him as per Muslim tradition. If they do not do so and carry out his wishes , then they will be party to the sin.
