Assalamualaikum,
Brief Biographies of
Some Eminent Salaf-As’haabul Hadeeth
Bismillahir Rahman Nir Raheem, Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Aalameen, Wassalaatu Wassalaam alaa Rasoolihil Ameen, Amma Ba’ad
All praise is for Almighty Allah and May peace and blessings of Allah be upon his slave and his last Prophet Muhammad. May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala exalt the position of The Prophet of Mercy-Muhammad SallAllahu Alayhi wa Sallam.
Books will finish if one starts writing on the scholars of Islam, Imams(scholars) of this Ummah who belonged to various locations, across various timespans, studying under various sources and situations. Alhamdulillah, it’s a miracle.
And it was difficult for me to pick a few from the thousands who are peers to each other.
Allah Sub’hanu wa Ta’ala stated in the Qur’aan

1. Sa’eed ibn al-Musayyib(d. 93/94 AH Rahimahullah)
He was among the senior Taaba’een, an Imam, A Faqeeh. He met, learned and narrated from various companions of the Prophet SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam. Many praised him as a “Leader of the Taaba’een” as he was among the most knowledgeable people among the Taaba’een (successors of companions).

3. Abu Bakr ibn Hazm (Rahimahullah)
Umar bin AbdulAziz was a scholar and an Imam of Muslims who is considered as a righteous Khaleefa as well. He is among those who worked for preservation of Hadeeth. During his era, he was afraid that knowledge will be taken away and he ordered the scholars in his time in Madeena like Abu Bakr bin Hazm* and others to accumulate and write down hadeeth of the Prophet SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam. Imam Bukhari mentioned “And Umar bin Abdulazeez wrote to Abu Bakr bin Hazm ‘Look for whatever is available from the Hadeeth of Allah’s Messenger(SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam) and get it written, I am afraid knowledge will vanish and the scholars will pass away(die). Do not accept anything except the Hadeeth of the Prophet(SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam). Spread knowledge and teach the ignorant, for knowledge does not vanish except when it is kept secret (to oneself).
Abu Bakr bin Hazm Rahimahullah was Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm al-Ansaari a Faqeeh(scholar and jurist) among the Taba’een of Madeena.
4. Mujahid bin Jabr(d. 103 AH Rahimahullah)
He was famous Imam, a Mufassir and Faqeeh from the Taaba’een, he learned from Abdullah Ibn Abbas(Radhi Allahu Anhuma) and other companions of the Prophet(SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam). People used to sit with him and write Tafseer of the Qur’an from his explanations. His statements in explanation of the Aayat of Qur’an are invaluable and can be found in various books of Hadeeth and Tafseer. He has narrated many Ahaadeeth as well.
5. Ash-Sha’abee(d 103-105 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Aamir Bin Sharaheel (It is also said – Aamir bin Abdillah Bin Sharaheel). He was a famous Imam from Koofa. In one report he mentioned meeting Five Hundred(500) companions of the Prophet(SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam). He is considered as an Imam in Hadeeth and Fiqh. He was firm against the innovators. Sufyan bin Uyayinah Rahimahullah said “Three are the scholars, Ibn Abbas in his time, Ash-Sha’bi in his time and Ath-Thauree in his time”
6. Taawus (d. 106 AH Rahimahullah)
He is ibn Kaysaan. It is said Taawus(lit. peacock) is his nickname. He was a famous Imam in Yemen, a senior Taaba’ee. He met several companions and reported from them. He was famous for his knowledge and Ibn Abbas(Radhi Allahu Anhu) is reported to praise him with regards to his piety. He is from the memorizers of Hadeeth, known to transmit Hadeeth accurately word for word.
7. Hasan Al-Basri(d. 110 AH Rahimahullah)
He was a famous Imam in Basra, a senior Taaba’ee. He was born in Madeena to the slave-woman of Umm Salama Radhi Allahu Anha the mother of the believers(wife of Prophet SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam). He met several companions. He is considered as an Imam in Hadeeth, Fiqh, Zuhd and Tafseer. Many students have learned from him in Basra. He had a book from companion Samurah bin Jundub (Radhi Allahu Anhu).
8. Muhammad Ibn Seereen (d. 110 AH Rahimahullah)
He was a famous scholar, and he was a specialist in the interpretation of the dreams. He met several companions of the Prophet(SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam) including Abu Hurayra, Abdullah bin Umar and others. He is considered as an Imam in Hadeeth. He is from the memorizers of Hadeeth, known to transmit Hadeeth accurately word for word so much that he even did not like to transmit Hadeeth in different vocabulary but with same meaning.
His statement “The Knowledge is the Deen, So see from whom you take your Deen” is a fundamental for every student of knowledge to take Deen from Ahlus Sunnah.
9. Mak’hool (d. 110/112-116 AH Rahimahullah)
He is a Taaba’ee who reported from some of the companions. He was an Imam and faqeeh, from the well praised memorizers of Hadeeth. Imam Zuhri praised him among four scholars for his knowledge. He was considered as a Faqeeh of his time from Shaam(the greater Syria).
10. Ataa bin Abi Rabah(d. 114 AH Rahimahullah)
He was a famous Imam, a Taaba’ee(successor of companions) from Makkah, he learned from Abdullah ibn Abbas and Abdullah bin Umar Radhi Allahu Anhum. And he also met other companions of the Prophet(SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam). He was often appointed as a Mufti during the Hajj period in Makkah. His narrations in Hadeeth and statements on Fiqh and Tafseer are invaluable and can be found in various books of Hadeeth and Tafseer.
11. Ibn Abee Mulayka (d. 117 AH Rahimahullah)
He was Abdullah bin Ubaydullah, a famous Imam, a Taaba’ee(successor of companions) from Madeenah, he met 30 companions of the Prophet SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam including Abdullah bin Abbas(Radhi Allahu Anhuma) and he narrated from Ayesha Radhi Allahu Anha as well.
12. Ibn Shihab Az-Zuh’ri(d. 124 AH Rahimahullah)
He Muhammad bin Muslim As-Zuhri, was a famous Imam in Madeena. He met several companions. He met some of the companions of the Prophet(SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam) and narrated from them including Abdullah ibn Umar(Radhi Allahu Anhuma). He is considered as an Imam in Hadeeth, among the first people who started collecting and writing narrations with chains/Isnad. He used to keep a book and meet other Taaba’een scholars and note from them.
Among his statements
“The people of knowledge before us used to say ‘salvation lies in clinging to the Sunnah’”
“Upon Allah is the Bayan (explaining), upon the Messenger(sallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam) is the Balagh (conveying) and upon us is Tasleem (willingly accepting).”
13. Abu Haneefa (d. 150 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Faqeeh of the nation, famous Imam from Koofa, Iraq, Nu’man bin Thaabit. He was considered as “Afqahun Naas” {among the best knowledgeable people} as he was a specialist and among the founders of science of Fiqh.
Most of the scholars of the past and the present acknowledge him as an Imam and a Pious servant who served Islam. Imam Shafa’ee said “People are dependent on Abu Haneefa for Fiqh(jurisdiction)”.
His statement: “If the hadeeth is saheeh then that is my madhhab” clearly shows his love for ‘Saheeh’ Hadeeth.
14. Auzaa’ee(d. 157 AH Rahimahullah)
He was a famous Imam from present day Lebanon. Shaikh ul Islam and the scholar of people of Shaam, he moved from Damascus to Beirut. He is a scholar of Hadeeth as well as from the Fuqahaa(Jurists) who were well known. Imam Tirmizee mentions his opinions in many occasions in his Sunan in support of Ahaadeeth.
15. Sufyan Ath-Thauri( d. 161 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Sufyan bin Sa’eed ath-Thauri, a famous Imam from Koofa. He is known as Ameerul Momineen fil Hadeeth{Leader of the faithful in Hadeeth}. Ath-Thawree was strong against the innovators. He is an imam of Hadeeth, Fiqh and Sunnah. Imam Tirmizee Rahimahullah mentions his opinions very often in support of Ahaadeeth in his Sunan.
Among his sayings is “Beware of the Fitnah (trial) of the ignorant worshiper and the wicked scholar, because the trial of these two is indeed a trial for everyone put to trial”
16. Malik bin Anas(d.179 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abu Abdullah Malik bin Anas, a famous Imam from Madeena, He was an Imam of Hadeeth and rulings of Fiqh. He studied from Az-Zuhri and other eminent scholars of Madeena. He wrote and taught Hadeeth and Fiqh to several batches of students coming to learn in Madeena. His Muwatta is a famous book of Hadeeth. Imam Tirmizee mentions his opinions in many occasions in his Sunan in support of Ahaadeeth.
Among his famous statements is “The Sunnah is like the ship/ark of Nooh Alayhis Salaam, whoever embarks upon it reaches salvation and whoever refuses gets drowned”
17. Abdullah bin Mubarak(d. 181 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abu Abdur-Rahman, a famous Imam from al-Marw, He was famous for his collection of Hadeeth, Fiqh, travels for knowledge, Hajj and military services to the Islamic nation, and firmness against the innovators and liars of Hadeeth. He is an imam of Sunnah and Jarh wa Ta’adeel. He studied from Abu Haneefa, Sufyan Ath-Thauree and others. Some of his poems are very famous. Imam Tirmizee Rahimahullah mentions his juristic opinions very often in support of the Ahaadeeth in his Sunan. His Hadeeth book “Kitab uz Zuhd” is a collection of Heart Tendering narrations.
Among his famous statements is “If there was no Isnaad(reference/chain), Anyone would have said whatever he wants(in the name of Islam)”.
And also, “Do not take Hadeeth from so-and-so, he speaks ill about our Salaf”
18. Muhammad bin Hasan Ash-Shaybaani(d 189 AH Rahimahullah)
He was a student of Imam Abu Haneefa and Imam Malik Rahimahullah. He studied and compiled a version of Muatta from Imam Malik. It was edited with his reports and comments, it is known as Muatta Imam Muhammad.
19. Sufyan bin Uyainah(d. 198 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Shaukh ul Islam, Abu Muhammad Sufyan bin Uyainah, born in Koofa and then he moved to Makkah. From the eminent memorizers of Hadeeth and also known for his knowledge of Qur’an and interpretation of Ahaadeeth. Imam Shafa’ee said about him “If it were not for Malik and Sufyan, the knowledge would have passed away from Hijaz”
20. Ash-Shaafa’ee(204 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu ‘Abdullah, Muhammad bin ldris who was born in 150 H. in Ghaza and was taken to Makkah while a baby. He lived in Egypt where he died in 204 H. He was considered to be one of the most learned persons amongst the Muslim Ummah, unique, learned and among the founders of the science of Usul Al-Fiqh (the principles of jurisprudence). He has books like Kitab ul Umm, Musnad Shafa’i, and many others in his credit.
Among his statements “The Muslims are united that if the sunnah of the Allah’s Messenger (SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam) appears to any person, then it is not permissible for him to leave that for the saying of anyone”
21. Abu Dawud At-Tayalisi (d. 204 AH Rahimahullah)
Sulaiman bin Da’ud bin Al-Jarud Al-Basri was a Persian by origin and the freed slave of Az-Zubair. He was a great Hafiz and one of the eminent ‘Ulama. Al-Qallas and Ibn Al-Madini both said about him, “I have not seen someone who is more versed with the Hadeeth more than him”. Ibn Mahdi said, ‘He is a most truthful person.’ He recorded Hadeeth from more than one thousand scholars.
22. Abdur Razzaq bin Hummam (d. 211 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu Bakr, ‘Abdur-Razzaq bin Humam As-San’ani was a scholar of Hadeeth from Yemen, he was considered as one of the strongholds of knowledge. Imams Ahmad, Ishaq, Ibn Ma’in and Adh-Dhuhli narrated Hadeeth from him. His book Musannaf Abdur-Razzaq is still available. He was among the most famous scholars with possibly the largest number of students who travelled to Yemen to seek Hadeeth from this shaykh. He passed away at the age of 85.
23. Abu Bakr bin Abee Shaybah(d. 235 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Abee Shaiba was a unique Hafiz. He authored Al-Musnad wal-Musannaf and other books. He was a leader in the knowledge of Hadeeth and Abu Zur’a, Al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Da’ud and Khalaf narrated it from him. He was from family of people of knowledge and memorizers of Hadeeth from Koofa, Iraq. His brother Uthman bin Abee Shaybah also is a Hadeeth memorizer.
24. Ibn Rahawaih(d. 238 AH Rahimahullah):
Abu Ya’qub, Ishaq bin Ibrahim At-Tamimi Al-Hanzali Al-Marwazi was an eminent and great Haafiz, who was a resident and the ‘Aalim of Nishapur. He was also considered as the Sheikh of the east of his time and was known as Ibn Rahawaih. Abu Hatim also said, ‘His mastery (of the Hadeeth), accuracy and accuracy and memorization were very surprising.’ His book of Hadeeth is available in the form of Musnad.
25. Ahmad bin Hanbal(d. 241 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abu ‘Abdullah, Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Hanbal Ash-Shaibani, popularly known as Imam Ahmad. He was a celebrated theologian, jurist and a Hadeeth scholar, a Faqeeh, Imam us Sunnah. He studied the Hadeeth and Fiqh together with other Islaamic disciplines in Baghdad, then travelled to Ash-Sham and Hijaz for further studies. He was persecuted during the rule of Al-Ma’mun bin Harun Ar-Rashid for refusing to acknowledge the Bid’aa (innovation). He however, stood firm against these trials and tried to save the Sunnah from innovations. He is most famous for collecting the Hadeeth of the Prophet SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam compiled in the Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, which contain 28 to 29 thousand Hadeeth.
26. Ad-Daarimee (d. 255 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abu Muhammad, ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abdur-Rahmnan bin Al-Fadl bin Bahram At-Tamimi Ad-Darimi As-Samarqandi was born in the year 181 H. He was a celebrated Imam, Hafiz and Shaykh-ul-Islam of Samarqand and the author of Al-Musnad Al- ‘Aali. He heard Hadeeth at Al-Haramain, Khurasan, Ash-Sham, Iraq and Egypt. Muslim, Abu Da’ud, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa’i and others transmitted Hadeeth from him. He was described to be very intelligent and very virtuous and was considered to be an exemplary person in piousness, patience, hardwork, worship and abstinence. His Sunan Ad-Darimee is still favorite among students of knowledge and has a beautiful preface on the knowledge and methodology of the Salaf.
27. Al-Bukhari(d. 256 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abu Abdullah, Muhammad bin Ismaeel Al-Bukhari, a Mujtahid, Hafiz and Faqeeh. He studied under many Shaikhs and stayed in hijaz for 6 years. He travelled to as-shaam, al-misr, al-basra, alkufa, al-baghdad etc. Among his prominent books is Al-jami as-Saheeh, Tarikh Al Kabir, Juz Raf’ul Yadayn, Juz ul Qira’at and many others.
He was from the finest memorizers of Hadeeth and his book Saheeh Al-Bukhari won the attention of many scholars of following ages. They scrutinized it, wrote explanations on it and regarded it as the most authentic book of Hadeeth. He completed this book in 16 years.
28. Muslim bin Hajjaj(d. 261 AH Rahimahullah)
Muslim Bin Hajjaaj Al Nishapoori Al-Qushayri. Imam Muslim was born in 204 Hijri in Nishapoor, Iran, so called as Nishapuri and his tribe was Al-Qushayri which was an Arab tribe. Like the other Ahlul Hadeeth, He also travelled to different countries like Misr, Shaam, Iraq and Hijaz for seeking knowledge from other Hadeeth scholars.
He wrote a beautiful preface before his Saheeh Muslim. Saheeh Muslim is considered equivalent to Saheeh al-Bukhari, each has its own advantages but the majority considered Saheeh Al-Bukhari more superior in terms of authenticity. Imam Muslim got his book reviewed by some scholars and tried his best to remove any hidden defects from his book.
29. Abu Zur’aa Ar- Razi(d. 264 AH Rahimahullah)
Ubaidullah bin ‘Abdul-Karim, Abu Zur’a Ar-Razi was an eminent scholar of the Hadeeth. He was also considered among the Imam of ‘Al-Jarh wat-Ta’dil (the critical study of the Hadeeth narrators). Muslim, At-Tirmizi, An-Nasa’i, Ibn Majah and others narrated Hadeeth from him.
Muhammad ibn Bashaar (Bundaar*) (Rahimahullah) said: The great memorizers of the world are four (4): Abu Zu’rah in Rayy, ad-Darimee in Samarqand, Muhammad ibn Ismael in Bukhara and Muslim in Nishapoor.
*Imam Muhammad bin Bashar was himself nicknamed “Bundaar” for his abundance in Hadeeth, All scholars of “Kutub us Sitta” (The Six famous books of Hadeeth) reported from Imam Bundaar
30. Abu Hatim Ar-Razi(d. 277 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu Hatim, Muhammad bin Idress Al-Hanzali Ar-Razi. He was an eminent Hafiz and an Imam and one of the prominent scholars who excelled in the methodology of Hadeeth. He was also one of the most respected scholars in the knowledge Al-Jarh wat-Ta’dil (verifying the reliability and unreliability of the narrators of the Hadeeth)
His son Ibn Abee Hatim also was also a scholar and his book of Tafseer is among one of the Tafseer collections of Ahlus Sunnah. He also wrote a book in which he wrote the Aqeedah of Ahlus Sunnah which he narrated from his father Abu Hatim Ar-Razi and Abu Zur’a Ar-Razi.
31. Abu Abdullah ibn Majah (d. 273 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Yazeed, popularly known as Ibn Majah, a great Hadeeth scholar, interpreter of Quran and historian, his outstanding rank especially in the field of Hadeeth sciences, has been acknowledge by scholars. He was from Qazween, a city in present Iran. His book As-Sunan got popular and is among the six prominent books of Hadeeth. He wrote a beautiful preface in the form of Kitab us Sunnah, at the beginning of the book and ended the book with beautiful chapters on Fitan and Zuhd.
32. Abu Dawud As-Sijistaani(d. 275 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu Dawood is Sulayman bin Ahs-ath bin Ishaaq Al-Azdi as-Sijistaani. He was born in Sijistaan a region in Eastern Iran in 202 Hijri. He was from the tribe of Azd, which is originally an Arab tribe. He travelled seeking knowledge and reported from people of Iraq, Sham, Misr and Khu’rasan. He was among the teachers of other sunans like Nasa’ee and Tirmizee. His book Sunan Abu Dawud is among the six prominent books of Hadeeth.
33. Muhammad bin Eesa At-Tirmizee(d. 279 AH Rahimahullah)
Imam Tirmizee is Abu Eesa Muhammad bin Eesa bin Surah as-Sulamee at-Tirmizee born in the town Tirmiz near the northern border of Afghanistan in 209 hijri. He travelled to various places seeking Ahadeeth and reported from people of Hijaaz, Iraq and Khurasan.
His book Jami/Sunan is among the six prominent books of Hadeeth, and is very popular among the scholars and also the students of knowledge. He has gathered the knowledge in an easy manner and narrates the action of the Salaf Saliheen(May Allah be pleased with them) wherever required in support of Hadeeth.
34. Ahmad bin Sho’aib An-Nasa’ee(d.303 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu Abdur-Rahman Ahmad bin Shoeb An-Nasa’ee, born in the year 214 or 215 Hijri in An-Nasa a place in the Khuraasaan. He travelled to other cities like Naysapur, Baghdad, Ash-Sham, Egypt, Makkah, Al-Madinah and other areas of Arabia to seek knowledge from the other scholars who collected Hadeeth from their predecessors. He is the author of the famous book Al-Mujtaba which is narrated by his student Ibn As-Sunni(Rahimahullah) which is commonly known as Sunan An-Nasa’ee and is considered as the most authentic book after Saheeh Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim.
35. Ibn Khuzayma(d. 311 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Muhammad bin Ishaq was born in 223 H. In Nishapur. He was considered as a Sheikh-ul-lslam (the most learned ‘Aalim of Islam) and one of the eminent and senior Hafiz. He was the Imam and Hafiz of Khurasan during his time. He also authored more than 140 books including Saheeh ibn Khuzaima and Kitabut Tawhid. He died in Nishapur in 311 H.
36. Abu Jafar At-Tahhaawi(d. 321 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu Ja’far, Ahmad bin Muhammad Al-Azdi Al-Misri At-Tahawi Al-Hanafi was born in the year 228 H. or 227 H. He was nicknamed after a village called Taha in Egypt. He was a student of Al-Muzni. Among his most famous books is Sharh Ma’ani Al-Athar and Aqeedah Tahawiyya which is very famous and among the classical books of Aqeedah of Ahlus Sunnah
37. Ibn Hibban Al-Busti (d. 354 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abu Hatim, Muhammad bin Hibban, a great and well-versed scholar. He was a leading scholar of Khorasan. He has many great and famous works to his credit. He is an Imam of Hadeeth as well as Jarh Wa Ta’adeel.
38. Tabaraani(d. 360 AH Rahimahullah)
Abul-Qasim, Sulaiman bin Ahmad At-Tabarani was born in Tabariya As-Sham. He was an authoritative Imam and narrated Hadeeth from more than one thousand scholars. He left Ash-Sham to acquire the knowledge of Hadeeth and spent thirty-three years of travelling in its pursuance. He authored many interesting and amusing books, among them are Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabir, Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat, and Al-Mu’jam As-Saghir. At-Tabarani lived in Asfahan and died there.
39. Ad-Daraqutni(d. 385 AH Rahimahullah):
Abul-Hasan, ‘Ali bin ‘Umar bin Ahmad bin Mahdi Al-Baghdadi. He was nicknamed after a big store called Dar Al-Qutn in Baghdad. He was a great Hafiz and a unique Imam who was born in the year 306 H. He was the authority in the methodology of Hadeeth, the knowledge of the weaknesses of the Hadeeth narrations and names of the Hadeeth narrators of his time.
40. Abu Abdullah Haakim(d. 405 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu ‘Abdullah, Muhammed ‘Abdullah An-Nishapuri Al-Hakim known as Ibn Al-Baiyi’ was born in 321H. He was a celebrated Imam in the verification of Hadeeth. He authored Al-Mustadrak in the methodology of Hadeeth. It is said that he studied under one thousand professors and authored many valuable books. Al-Hakim was pious and religious. He died in Safar 405 H.
41. Ibn Hazm(d.456 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abu Muhammad Ali ibn Ahmad popularly known as Ibn Hazm, he was an imam and a mujtahid, a Faqeeh from Al-Andalus(Cordoba). He was strictly against the blind following of the Mazhabs. He wrote many voluminous books comprising of thousands of pages. Al-Muhalla, Ahkam etc., are famous among them. Scholars mentioned some of his opinions are iconoclastic and his methodology is regarded as of Zaahiriyya or literalist methodology, where the apparent meaning of a proof is taken as is without any analogy especially in Fiqh(juristic) matters.
42. Bayhaqee(d. 458 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu Bakr, Ahmad bin Al-Husain was born in Al-Baihaq, a town in Nishapur in the year 374H. He was considered a learned Hafidh among the eminent Imams of Hadeeth and a jurisprudence scholar in the Shafi’ee Madhhab. He wrote many books like As-Sunan Al-Kubra and As-Sunan As-Sughra. Adh-Dhahabi said “His books exceed one thousand volumes”.
43. Baghawi(d. 510 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Imam Abu Muhammad Hussayn bin Mas’oud Al-Baghawi, one of the Imams of Ahlus-Sunnah Wal Jamaa‘ah. He believed in the creed of the righteous predecessors and followed their methodology. His book which is called Ma‘aalim At-Tanzeel is one of the best books of Tafseer (interpretation of the Quran). His Tafseer is praised by scholars. He also authored books on Hadeeth like Sharh us Sunnah and Masabeeh us Sunnah. Masaabih us Sunnah was later simplified and edited named Mishkatul Masabih by Imam Tabrezi Rahimahullah.
44. Ibn Salah(d. 632 AH Rahimahullah)
Taqi-ud-Din ibn Abi An-Nasr was born in AH 577 (1181 CE) in Erbil, Iraq. He is famous among Ahlul Hadeeth as a reviver of the science of Hadeeth. His book known as Introduction of Ibn As-Salah is considered a pillar in the transmission-based approach employed in the authentication of sources and verification of texts in the study of Hadith. Later scholars like Imam Nawawi, Ibn Hajr etc., worked on his works to take the sciences of Hadeeth further. Scholars of the following ages wrote explanations, compendiums, and poetry on it. It has been considered one of the best works of the scholars of Hadith on the science of the classification of Hadith.
45. Abdul Ghani Maqdisi(d. 600 AH)
He is Imam Abu Muhammad Abdul-Ghaniyy bin Abdul-Waahid Al-Maqdisi, a Haafiz of Hadeeth. He is known as a master of Hadeeth with knowledge of Ahaadeeth and the Asmaa-ur Rijaal. Popular with his concise book Umdatul Ahkam. It received attention from various scholars and the common people. It is taught till today as a first step into the knowledge of Hadeeth and Fiqh.
46. Munziree (d. 656 AH Rahimahullah)
Hafiz Zakiuddin Abdul-Azim bin Abdul-Qawi Al-Mundhiri, originally Ad-Dimashqi (his family was from Damascus, Syria) and then AI-Misri (Egyptian), which was the place of his birth, his home and his death. He was from the memorizers of Hadeeth. His works also focused on simplifying the books of Hadeeth. He compiled Summarized Saheeh Muslim, Summarized Sunan Abu Dawud. His book At-Targheeb wat Tarheeb got famous in which he collected Ahaadeeth to encourage good deeds and to discourage evil deeds.
47. Nawawi(d. 676 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Muhiuddeen Abu Zakariyya Yahya bin Sharaf An-Nawawi born in the village of Nawa south of Damascus. He came from a modest family lived a short life but has written a lot of beneficial books for the scholars as well as the commoners. Some of his prominent books are Al-Arba’een(40 Hadeeth), Riyadh us Saliheen(The Gardens of the Righteous) and commentary of Saheeh Muslim. He died at the age of 44 years leaving behind a legacy of books which are still serving across the world in reforming the common and as well as the clergy.
48. Qurtubi(d. 671 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abu Bakr al-Ansari al-Qurtubi was a famous mufassir, muhaddith and faqih scholar from Cordoba was born in Cordoba, Spain. He specialised in fiqh and Hadith. The most famous of then is his Tasfeer Al-Jami’ li-Ahkam al-Qur’an. He traveled from Spain to the East and settled in Munya Abi’l-Khusavb. in Upper Egypt. where he died in 671H. His Tafseer is a scholarly work and among the prominent commentaries in interpretation of the Qur’an.
49. Ibn Daqeeq(d. 702 AH Rahimahullah)
Imam Muhammad Ibn Ali ibn Wahb Al Misri, known as Ibn Daqeeq Al Eid. He was from the students of Al-Munziree. He was a prolific and acclaimed scholar of his time. Among his works is compilation of the Ahaadeeth of Ahkaam(rulings) in his book Al-Imam Fee Ahaadeeth ul Ahkaam. He is famous for his commentary on Arba’een Nawawi. He also wrote a commentary of Umdatul Ahkam by the name Ahkamul Ahkam Sharh Umdatul Ahkam. His book Al-Imam was translated and printed in Urdu.
50. Ibn Taymiyya(d. 728 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Shaykh ul Islam, Ahmad ibn ‘Abdul-Halim ibn ‘Abdis-Salam. His kunyah is Abu’l-‘Abbas and he is also referred to as Taqi ad-Din. Shaykh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah held a lofty status amongst the scholars of his time and those of the following ages till date. He wrote several books, essays and articles on various subjects and gave Fataawaa on various topics. His books on refutation of innovations and revival of the way of the Salaf Saaliheen are still benefiting the clergy and the commons.
Among his famous statements is “The one who is (truly) imprisoned is the one whose heart is imprisoned from Allah and the captivated one is the one whose desires have enslaved him.”
He passed away leaving behind legacy of books and students who were equally qualified like him.
51. Ibn Qayyim(d. 751 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Shams ud-Deen, Abu Abdullaah, Muhammad bin Abu Bakr. He was born on the 7th of Safar in the year 691H and was raised in a house of knowledge and excellence and this offered him the chance to take knowledge from the senior scholars of his time one of the senior scholars in tafseer, hadeeth, usool, furoo (subsidiary matters) and Arabic language. He has several scholarly books and articles on various subjects. Among them Zaad ul Maad, Jawabul Kaafi, Ilaam al-Muwaqqieen etc.,
52. Zahhabi(d. 748 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Shamsuddin, Muhammad Ahmad Az-Zahhabi, a master of Hadeeth and its sciences, a historian of Islam. He compiled many works in this regard such as Mizan al-I’tidal fi Naqd al-Rijal (The Scale of Justice in Critically Examining the Reporters), Siyar A’lam al-Nubala (The Lives of Noble Figures), Al-Mughni fi ‘l-Du’afa (an authoritative abridged manual of weak narrators) and Tadhkirat al-Huffaz (The Memoirs of the Hadith Masters). If one collects all his books it will become a library. Most of those who want to know about scholars, kings or anyone famous in Islamic history they will refer to his books, however the shaykh did not write about himself except a few lines.
53. Ibn Kathir (d. 774 AH Rahimahullah)
He is the respected Imam, a Faqeeh, Hafiz of Hadeeth, Mufassir of Qur’an and an historian. Abul-Fida’, Imad Ad-Din Ismail bin Umar bin Kathir born in Busra. Got his training, learning and residence in Damascus. Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani said, “Ibn Kathir worked on the subject of the Hadith in the areas of texts and chains of narrators. He had a good memory, his books became popular during his lifetime, and people benefited from them after his death.”
His Masterpiece work is his Tafseerul Qur’anil Azeem and books on Seerah are among the most valuable books which are suitable for both scholars and students of knowledge.
54. Ibn Rajab (d. 795 AH Rahimullaah)
He is Zain ud-Deen AbduRahmaan bin Ahmad, ibn Rajab -Rahimullaah. One of the great scholars of Hadeeth & Fiqh. He died in 795 A.H. Ibn Hajr -Rahimullaah- said: ‘He perfected the knowledge of Hadeeth, and became the most knowledgeable about the inaccuracies of Hadeeth and tracing their routes from the people of his time’
55. Ibn Hajr Asqalaani(d. 852 AH Rahimahullah)
He is the famous Imam, Abul Fadl, Al-Hafiz, Shihabudding Ahmad bin Ali Al-‘Asqalani born in Egypt, where he grew up also. He memorized the Qur’an at the age of nine years. He traveled to Makkah and listened to the teaching of its ‘Ulama. While he admired the knowledge of Hadith and began to acquire it from the scholars in Hijaz, Ash-Sham, Egypt and stayed with Hafiz Al-‘Iraqi for ten years. He also studied under other eminent scholars of his time. Scholars of his time and following ages acknowledged his knowledge. He wrote several books most of which are scholarly works on the sciences of Hadeeth, narrators and commentaries of Hadeeth. If one collects all his books it will become a library. He is famous for his book Fath Al-Baari which is a commentary of Saheeh Al-Bukhari and Buloogh ul Maram which is a basic book of Hadeeth for common people or beginners of Hadeeth.
56. Zubaydee (d. 893 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn ‘Abd al-Lateef al-Zubaydi (893 AH), a scholar from Yemen. He summarized Saheeh al-Bukhari and he called his summary al-Tajreed al-Sareeh li Ahaadeeth al-Jaami’ al-Saheeh. It leaves off the repeated ahadeeth and the chains of narrators which makes it much smaller in size and easy for the students and beginners. This book got the attention of the scholars some of them wrote commentaries on it.
57. As-Sindee(d 1138/1139H Rahimahullah)
He is Nooruddin, Abul Hasan Muhammed bin Abdul Haadi Al-Sindi; He was born in Sind and died in Madeenah d 1138/1139H. He is well known for his famous commentaries on the books of Hadeeth like Sunan Nasaa’ee and Sunan Ibn Majah. He was from traditional Hanafi school but his commentary of Ahadeeth shows that he preferred Hadeeth over opinions.
58. Muhammad bin Abdulwahhab (d. 1205 AH Rahimahullah)
Imam Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab was a great man, an outstanding reformer and a zealous preacher, who appeared in the Arabian Peninsula in the twelfth century A.H. the Shaikh traveled to Makkah and then to Medina to learn from learned personalities there. Then he went to Iraq (Basrah) to seek after knowledge. It was in Iraq that he started his mission. There he called the people to Tawheed and the Sunnah of the Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam). He announced that it was the duty of every Muslim to follow his or her religion (Islam) strictly in accordance with the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
He wrote several books benefiting the common people as well scholarly works. His Kitabut Tawheed, Usool us Thalatha, Kashf wa Shubahat are famous among the people of Dawah, who invite both Muslims and non-Muslims to the oneness of Almighty Allah. Most of his books convey the basics to the Islamic nation.
59. Isma’eel Dehlawi(d. 1246 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Shah Isma’eel Dehlawi (Rahimahullah), from the famous “Dehlawi” family of Muhadditheen like Shah waliullah muhaddis dehlawi rahimahullah. Shah Ismail, is well-known and respected scholar among various sections and schools of thought in the Indian sub-continent. At that time, Islam for the majority of Muslims in India, was nothing but monuments, mausoleums, superstitions, innovations and cuisine. He was involved in reforming the people to revert back to Quran and Sunnah. He wrote many books on basics like Taqwiyyatul Eeman, Sirat Mustaqeem etc., He was involved in a famous Hajj caravan when Hajj was almost abolished in India as the clergy issued Fatwa that going to Hajj was not safe because of sea travel.
60. Ash-Shawkaani(d. 1250 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Muhammad bin ‘Alee ash-Shawkanee who died in the year 1250 A.H. he lived in Sana’, Yemen. He studied under his father who was a great scholar of Yemen, and he authored many books in the different sciences of Islaam, in Tafseer he wrote ‘Fathul-Qadeer’, and in the field of hadeeth he wrote ‘Nail awtaar’ and in Fiqh ‘Ad-durarul Bahiyya’ etc.,. Scholars from various places across the world studied with him.
61. Siddeeq Hasan Khan (d.1307 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Siddeeq Hasan Khan Al-Qaanooji Al-Bukharee, a famous Hadeeth scholar of India, involved in research and teaching of Hadeeth/Aqeedah including explanation of the book Ad-Durarul Mudiyyah in his book ar-Rawdatun Nadiyyah, he also wrote ‘Awn al-Baari Sharh Tajreed al-Sareeh. He was a student of Imam Khairuddeen Aalusi and when he made Hajj he went to Yemen and met Imam Shawkani Rahimahullah and wrote a copy of his books by hand. At a time when Islamic literature in India, especially Hadeeth books were nothing but just Arabic manuscripts kept in museums and accessible only to few scholars, he worked to translate the books like Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Muslim etc., in local language(Urdu), the most common language of muslims in the subcontinent.
62. Sayyid Nathir Husayn Dehlawi(d. 1320 AH Rahimahullah)
He was a famous Hadeeth scholar of India, a prominent, prolific scholar involved in research, teaching and grooming of students who became well-known across the world for research and compilation of various books on Hadeeth like Awn ul Maabood, Tuhfatul Ahwazi, Taaleeq ala Sunan Daraqutni etc., which brought the Ahlul Hadeeth scholars of the Indian subcontinent on the fore front of the Muslim world in the field of knowledge and research of the narrations involved in reaching to the Sunnah of the noble prophet SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam. He is known as Shaykh ul Kul among the Ahlul Hadeeth of Indian subcontinent.
63. Shamsul Haq Azeemabadi(d. 1349H Rahimahullah)
He was born in Azeemabad(presently called as Patna). He was from the memorizers of Hadeeth. Among his prominent work is At-Taleeq Ala Sunan Ad-Daaraqutni, a commentary on Sunan Daraqutni. His student Sharaful Haq Azeemabadi compiled Awn ul Maabood sharh Sunan abu Dawud, a famous commentary of Sunan Abu Dawud. It is said that he taking the research of his teacher on Sunan Daraqutni in commentary of Sunan Abu Dawud. Both the books are scholarly works in Arabic, in the style of Muhaddiseen well appreciated by the lovers of Hadeeth in the world.
64. Abdur Rahman Mubarakpoori (d. 1353 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Abul Aala, Abdur-Rahman bin Abdur-Raheem Mubarakpoori, Mubarakpoor is a district in central/north India, from the prolific memorizers of the Hadeeth. He is famous among the scholars of the world, with his commentary of Sunan/Jami at-Tirmidhi called “Tuhfatul-Ahwazi” (in Arabic). This book is comparable to the level of the books of the Scholars of Salaf and the noble Muhadditheen.
65. Abdur Rahman As-Saadee(d. 1376 AH Rahimahullah)
He was the Shaykh Abu ‘Abdullaah ‘Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Naasir Ibn ‘Abdullaah Ibn Naasir Aal Sa’dee from the tribe of Banee Tameem. He was born in the city of ‘Unayzah, in the region of Qaseem, on the 12th of Muharram in the year 1307 A.H./1886 C.E. He memorized the Qur’an and mastered the science of its recitation before he reached the age of 11 years. He then engaged himself in seeking knowledge, studying with the scholars. Besides various scholarly works, his Methodological Interpretation of the Qur’an got very popular with the masses in the Arabic world and has been translated in Urdu and English.
66. Muhammad Gondalwee(d. 1405 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Muhammad Gondalwi , an Imam from recent era, who possessed very profound knowledge. From the memorizers of the Hadeeth. He served as a teacher of hadeeth in Jaami’aa Islaamiyah Madeenah Munawwarah, the scholars of Hijaaz used to admit and admire the deep knowledge of the Shaikh. Shaikh Mohammed Nasiruddeen Al-Albani and shaykh Muhammad Ameen shanqeeti are reported to praise him for his memorization of Hadeeth.
67. Ahmad Shakir (d. 1377 AH Rahimahullah)
He was Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Shaakir bin Ahmad bin ‘Abdil-Qaadir. His Father was a Judge in Sudan. He had a strong love for the subject of Hadeeth. He obtained ijaazahs (written approvals) on Hadeeth from ‘Abdullaah bin Idrees As-Sanoosee, the Scholar and Muhaddith of Morocco, and from Ahmad bin ash-Shams Ash-Shanqeetee. He also learned under Shaikh Taahir Al-Jazaa’iree Al-Atharee and other scholars, whose specialization was the Prophetic Hadeeth. He worked on the verification of various books of Hadeeth like Sunan Tirmizee, Musnad Ahmad(incomplete) and many other books. The Shaikh died in Egypt in the year 1958.
68. Ubaidullah Mubarakpoori(d. 1414 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Ubaidullah Rahmani Mubarakpoori, from the memorizers of Hadeeth. He is known for his commentary of Mishkatul Masaabih. Many prominent scholars of Hijaz and other parts of the world studied and narrated Hadeeth from him.
69. Badeeuddin Shah Rashidee(d. 1417 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Sayyid Badee-ud-Deen Shaah ibn Ehsaanu, His birthplace is a town named Pir Chando (city of Sa’eedabad), Province Haalaa, which is at a distance of approximately 70 km from the city of Hyderabad (Pakistan), His father, Ehsaanullaah Shaah, was also a scholar and a Muhaddith. He laid the foundation of a Madrassah in his hometown. Besides his teaching and Dawah in his home country, he also served in Saudi ‘Arabia for about 5 years giving Duroos at the Haram in Makkah al-Mukarramah and in Madeena that earned him worldwide acclaim. Some of his lectures there were in ‘Arabic and some in Urdu. He wrote several books in Arabic, Urdu and Sindhee. Scholars like Ibn Baz, Albani, Rabee Al Madkhalli and others praised him.
70. Syed Sabiq Al-Masri (d. 1420 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Al-Faqeeh, Sayyid Sabiq was born in 1915 in the Egyptian village, Istanha. He taught at Al-Azhar, and later moved to Saudi Arabia, where he headed the Shari’a Graduate Studies Department in Um Al-Qura University. After moving back to Egypt, he spent years teaching students in a Mosque in Cairo. He is famous for his book Fiqh us-Sunnah: Islamic Legal Rulings Concerning the Sayings and Actions of the Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam). Every ruling in the book goes back to the Qur’an and Sunnah, he also mentioned positions of prominent scholars, with no preferential treatment to any. This book got popularity like Riyadh us Saaliheen, Bulooghul Maram and Umdatul Ahkaam.
71. AbdulAzeez bin Baaz(d. 1420 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Al-Faqeeh, Al-Imam Abdul-‘Azeez ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Baz. Shaykh ibn Baz, born in 1330H and grew up in a good family. He memorized the entire Qur’an at a young age and studied with the scholars in his homeland before travelling to seek knowledge in other countries. He lost his eyesight completely at the age of 19, because of illness.
He was a Mujaddid(reviver) who combined knowledge of fiqh with knowledge of hadith. He knew about hadith and their degrees of soundness. He had memorized many volumes of Ahaadeeth; He was also the head of the Islamic Fiqh Council (Majma’ al-Fiqh al-Islami) which issues Fatawa concerning serious contemporary matters. He is known for advising the rulers and helping the people. He wrote several booklets on basic matters of Islam and his style of explanation was very easy. He also wrote a commentary of Fath Al-Bari, it’s is very light – he only commented where he felt that it was absolutely necessary.
72. Al-Albani(d. 1420 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Muhaddith ul Asr, Al-Imam Muhammad Nasiruddeen. He was born in the city of Ashkod ra, then the capital of Albania in the year 1332 A.H./1914 C.E. into a poor family. His father had completed Sharee’ah studies in Istanbul and returned a scholar to Albania. After Albania was taken over by atheism the family made Hijrah to Damascus. In Damascus Shaykh al-Albaanee completed his initial education and was then taught the Quraan, Tajweed, sciences of Arabic language, Fiqh of the Hanafee madhab and further branches of the Deen by various shaykhs.
The shaykh was from memorizers of Hadeeth in recent times, he researched and wrote several books of Hadeeth. His knowledge and Dawah reformed several scholars in various countries.
73. Muhammad Salih Ibn Uthaimeen(d. 1421 AH Rahimahullah)
Abu ‘Abdullaah Muhammad ibn Saalih ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen at-Tameemee an-Najdee was born in the city of Unayzah, Qaseem Region. He has written several explanations and commentaries of various books which benefit the students of knowledge and scholars as well. He was a Faqeeh and gave religious verdicts, like Shaykh ibn Baaz, his Fataawa were based on evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
74. Safi ur-Rahman Mubarakpoori (d. 1427 AH Rahimahullah)
He is among the prolific scholars of recent times born in Hussainabad a small village in India near Mubarakpoor. He was involved in teaching Islamic studies. He wrote several books which became popular in the Arab world. Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtum: The Sealed Nectar, When the Moon Split, History of Islam (revision), and History of Makkah / Madinah, Itthaful Kiram At-Taaleeq Alaa Buloogh ul Maram(Arabic) {brief commentary on Buloogh ul Maram}, Commentary of Saheeh Muslim(Arabic), Rawdatul Anwar min Seeratin Nabiyyil Mukhtar(Arabic){Enlighted Gardens(Lessons) from biography of the chosen Prophet SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam)}, Great women of Islam.
Ar-Raheequl Makhtum, his work in Arabic on the biography of the Prophet SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam got the first prize from Muslim World League. He also worked with group of scholars in research and arrangement of Tafseer Ibn Katheer, famous in Arabic as Al-Misbah ul Muneer fee Tamyeez Tafseer ibn Katheer.
Besides various institutions, He served Jamiah Salafiah Banaras. A Research Institute was established in 1408H in the Islamic University of Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah as “The Center for the Services of the Prophet’s Biography”. He was selected to work there and was entrusted the duties of preparing encyclopedia on the subject of the life history of the Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi wa sallam)
75. Zubayr Alee Za’ee (d. 1435 AH Rahimahullah)
He is Shaikh Al-Allaamah Al-Haafiz Zubair Alee Za’ee. He belongs to the Pathaan tribe called “Alee Za’ee”. He is the author of several scholarly works and books for common people. From the memorizers of Hadeeth in recent times, He was prolific in Tahqeeq of Isnaads. This fervency demands a huge Library. The Shaikh has also established a great and huge Library, by spending much of his money, and his library is called “Maktabat uz-Zubayria”. A huge amount of books are found in this library from several different genres, such as books on: Quraan, Uloom ul-Quraan, Hadeeth, Uloom ul-Hadeeth, Matoon ul-Hadeeth, Shuruhaat ul-Hadeeth, Asmaa ur-Rijaal, and Fiqh ul-Madhaahib, Kutub al-Faraq, Lughat and many others. The Shaikh used to spend most of his time in this Library, getting him busy in his Academic and research works. Among his notable works is the Tahqeeq of each and every report in the four books of Sunan in Arabic. It was printed by Daarussalaam Riyadh, in Arabic , Urdu and English.
