Bismillahir Rahman Nir Raheem,

Assalamualaikum,

Legal Status of Music in Islam

Bismillahir Rahman Nir Raheem, Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Aalameen, Wassalaatu Wassalaam alaa Rasoolihil Ameen. Amma Ba’ad
All praise is for Almighty Allah and May peace and blessings of Allah be upon his slave and his last Prophet Muhammad. May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala exalt the position of The Prophet of Mercy-Muhammad SallAllahu Alayhi wa Sallam.
The below article is an advice to myself and those of my beloved fellow muslims who I can reach, we all have shortcomings I would like to clarify that the below advice is in good faith to help eradicate this sin which is not considered as a sin by our common masses and most of them are doing it just for fun, show-off and false-prestige without realizing the impact on the Hereafter.
Wa La Haula walaa Quwwata illa billah..
And no one has the ability to do good and no one has the ability to stay away from evil except with the help of Allah Sub’hanahu wa Ta’ala.
1) Qur’an mentions Shaytan and his Sound:

And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them. But Satan does not promise them except delusion
[Qur’an, Surah Isra(17), Ayat 64]
2) Prophet(SallAllahu Alayhi wa Sallam) mentioned one of Shaytan’s Sound Instrument:

In Another Hadeeth in the same chapter, Imam Muslim mentioned the reason

The above Hadeeth mentions the “angels of mercy”, as we are always accompanied by angels for our protection, recording of our deeds and angels pray for us as well.
When Angels do not accompany caravans with simple bells on their animals, we should ponder what is the status of our “Blessed” marriage and Valima Ceremonies where we arrange musical entertainments for hundreds of people???
3) The Forbiddance of Musical Instruments and Singing:
4) And a Punishment that will be given to some people who will take it as Halal:
Famous scholar of Qur’an, Imam Qurtubi(Rahimahullah) mentioned in Tafseer of Surah Luqman, Ayat 6
image004 1?w625 -
“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talk (Lahw Al-Hadith) to mislead from the path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment”

Imam Qurtubi says:
I say “This is one of the three Aayaat(verses) in the Qur’an from which the scholars derived the ruling of “Karaaha” (dislike/abhorrence) of Singing and Stopping/Prevention from it.
And the second Aayat is the saying of the Ta’ala(The Highest) “While you are proudly sporting?” {Surah Najm, Ayat 61}, Ibn Abbas(Radhi Allahu Anhuma) said “It is singing in Himyari(language)”, “Ismidi Lana” meaning “Sing for us”
And the third Aayat is the saying of the Ta’ala(The Highest) “And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice” {Surah Isra(17), Ayat 64], Mujahid(Rahimahullah) said: “Singing and Musical Instruments”…..
The Imam of Sunnah, Imam Bukhari(Rahimahullah) mentioned a beautiful Hadeeth in his Saheeh

Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Hadeeth 5590
A similar hadeeth is reported by the Imam of Sunnah, Abu Abdullah Imam Ibn Majah(Rahimahullah) in his Sunan …

From the above evidences and other generic evidences mentioned in Qur’an and Sunnah, the scholars from the early generations and those who came later agreed that Musical Instruments are Haraam whether accompanied by Singing or not, whether they are used for Romatic/Obscene songs, Classical music or religious music*.
Note:
It should be noted that the “Religious/Devotional Compilations” which are popular on religious occasions in our society most of them are Haraam as they use “Haraam musical instruments”* and as well as lyrics ascribing divinity to the creation.
And a Muslim shall not attend or stay in gatherings in which musical “entertainment” is organized.
*Exception of Duff:
All musical instruments are forbidden with the exception of Duff. And this Duff is not Marfa. Please consult scholars for the description and conditions of playing Duff.
We ask Allah Sub’hanahu wa Ta’ala to make us understand and act on His Deen and save us from all trials.
And Allah Sub’hanahu wa Ta’ala knows best, Wallahu Aa’alamu
Wa Sallillaahumma Alaa Sayyidina Wa Nabiyyina Muhammad Wa Alaa Aalihi Wa Sah’bihi Wa Barik Wa Sallim. Wal Hamdulillaahi Rabbil Aalameen.
