View Full Version : Is music haram?

The cemaat my family is a part of (the gulen movement) says that music is not a sin, and many scholars, including al Ghazzali, Said Nursi, etc. say that music is not haram.....it seems counterintuitive to me that something as simple as music would be haram, and no hadeeth seems to cite the reason for it being haram, and it seems to say it is haram because back in the day it was used in free mixing and for drinking alcohol...but on the other hand, Islam means submission, and so we are supposed to follow the Deen, and not our whims and intuitions....care to cite some evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah in favor of a side?

Assalamu Alaykum,

I do not know the details of the fiqh perspective on this, the above answers will help you with that inshaAllah.
I understand there are some who believe certain instruments are permitted, and if it reminds you of Allah SWT or that which is good and does not encourage fitnah it is also permitted. God knows best. Read the evidence and decide.

But I will say that I listened to music a lot a few years ago. And the problem with music is that it creates a dependency, one which should only be upon Allah. People a lot of the time use it to drown out their thoughts or problems or just to 'occupy' themselves. It sounds intense but it is true. And most contemporary pop music fills your mind and soul up with junk. SubhanAllah I haven't listened to music so long but some of the songs I used to hear are still stuck in my head.
